1217.0. "Pink Floyd master Cd How good is it?" by SCOMAN::NAUJOKS () Mon Jun 06 1988 04:33

Has anybody herd the Pink Floyd master cd of Dark Side of the Moon.
It is made out of some type of gold the people at the store say
It sounds much better then the regular cd and it is from the master
itself. Harvest put the cd out. So has any herd it and if so how
    much better sounding is it?

Note 745.* talks a bit about gold cds. It's about a year old, though and does
not discuss the one you are inquiring about.

The Harvest version of Dark Side of The Moon was available in the
states about 2 1/2 years ago, since then the Capitol version has
replaced it. I have the Harvest version and my brother has the
Capitol. We have done some A/B comparisons and to my brother's
dismay the Harvest version sounds less harsh. My understanding
is that the Harvest version is a better mastering job than the
capitol. I have heard that the Harvest version is now selling in
the collector market for over a $100. I just walked in to
Strawberries three years ago and bought it on sale for $13.99.
	Timing is everything!

I heard a copy of the 'gold' DSOTM a couple of weeks ago. To me
it sounded a little better than the Capitol release. There seemed
to be a little less tape noise, and a little better lower end.
But I am not a big audiophile, so this isn't a *really* accurate
review. It also wasn't played on the greatest system in the world,
so that makes it harder to tell.

BTW, my friend payed about $25 for his copy.

Note that the "Gold" disc is from Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs,
part of their "UltraDisc" line. Gold is used instead of aluminum
    in the reflective layer.

Note also that there are five different issues of the DSoTM CD:

    The Capitol issue (US)
    The EMI issue (Japan)
    The Harvest issue (UK)
    The Mobile Fidelity regular issue
    The Mobile Fidelity gold issue.

I bought the Japanese version back before the US version was
    issued.

Mine is labeled both "EMI (Japan)" and "Harvest". I bought
it at some random place (e.g., Stawberries or Lechmere)
        less than two years ago.

        Which one is it?

Actually, mine has "Harvest" on it, too. Of course, the way to
tell is if most of the documentation is in English or Japanese.
    On mine, it's in Japanese.

1217.9Capitol vs. Harvest vs. MoFi...CIMNET::GRIFFITHTue Jul 26 1988 15:0039

If it's of interest, I had the fortunate opportunity to hear three
different CD versions of "Dark Side of the Moon" back to back on
an excellent stereo system. It was a great chance for me to decide
which one I wanted to buy (given the prices).

The U.S. Capitol version was played first, and sounded great, though
I could definitely hear some tape his during quiet moments.

The Harvest version was incredible. I noticed the difference
immediately - it was brighter, and definitely cleaner, with
considerably less tape his during quiet moments.

The Mobile Fidelity Gold CD version was also superbly clean. Better
    than the Harvest.

All in all, the MoFi Gold version was the best. If you have a superb
stereo system and consider yourself an "audiophile" in every sense
of the word, go for this one.

If you already own the Harvest version, don't cough up the $$ for
the MoFi version unless you're an extreme fanatic. Although the
MoFi version is slightly better, the difference between the MoFi
and the Harvest is not even close to the difference between the
Capitol and the Harvest. So if you have the Harvest, you've definitely
got a GREAT copy - probably not worth upgrading for the slightly
better quality of the MoFi version - unless, as I mentioned, you're
    an extreme audiophile.

If you have the Capitol version, you may well be very happy with
it. It still sounds great considering the recording is over 15 years
old. But once you've heard the Harvest or the MoFi, you'll get
depressed at how much better it could sound.

My choice? Given the options of the Capitol version at $12, the
Harvest version (used) at $10 (yep, that's what I found it for),
and the MoFi version at $30, I went for the Harvest.

    One man's opinion.

I had the Capitol version, but picked up the "gold" one as a
collector's item. I have since given away my Capitol copy!
    I couldn't believe improvement!

Where can I get Harvest/MoFi/Gold (?) versions of Pink Floyd (esp.
DSotM, WYWH, and Animals)? I'm willing to pay a premium price 'cause
when it comes to PF, I want only the best!

The Feb. INTERNATIONAL CD EXCHANGE mentions that MFSL plans an
April release for a gold disc edition of MEDDLE. Since I had
the excellent Japanese edition of DSOTM, I felt I could pass up
the gold DSOTM, but I'm really tempted with MEDDLE.
