983.0. "for Maggie 650 owners only" by PSYCHE::WOODBURN () Tue Nov 24 1987 11:04

Not that I advocate nitpicking, but I seem to have a problem with
my new maggie 650 cd player. It seems to be getting noiser by the
day. And not only that, when I close the disk drawer WITHOUT a disk
in it, sometimes there emerges a fairly loud rasping/scraping sound.
Any of you maggie 650 owners out there experience this? Any simple
    solutions?

The player still loads disks fine (albiet a little noisily) and
plays them fine too. My concern is this: Is the noise an early sign
of something that can be fixed easily? Should I ignore it or what?

What really pisses me off is that I bought it a Q-Audio
in Cambridge and they will not let me exchange it for another new
one. They suggest I take to the maggie service center in Burlington.

Any comments and suggessions are welcome.

    Vielen Dank,

    Rob

Consumer laws in California require that a merchant provide
an exchange of equivalent merchandise when goods are defective.
An exchange, not a cash refund, is required.

I'd recommend that you check consumer laws in Mass. with regard
to the sale of defective merchandise.

My 650 makes a low spinning sound, but it is not noticable
once the music starts. I'm not sure if it is a warning of
any problems, but it is consistant.

I also get a rough grinding sound once in a while when I close
the door, but it only happens with a disk in the unit. It almost
sounds like it is trying to push the disk into the right place
to start spinning. I'm not sure if this is anoying, bad, very bad,
or what. If it starts happening more than once a month, I am going
to bring it in for service.

The construction seems a little questionable, but the sound is amazing.

Ditto on .2 I've owned a Musical Concepts CDP650 (which is Maggie)
for 1 year with the same basic observations as previously noted.
It's certainly hard to ascertain whether the "noise" is of the same
magnitude and caused by the same source as in yours but my guess
is that its the same.. Maggie drives have this reputation. I'm
not worried about it; as long as it keeps spinning 'em and its quiet
    during play..

ps. The Musical Concept's modification do some pretty amazing things
to the already great sound. Highly recommended..

    ARCTIC::DODGE,

I'm interested to know what musical concepts does to the maggie
to improve it. Also, how much does the improvement cost?

983.5Phillips player ModificationsUSRCV1::THOMPSONPPaul ThompsonThu Dec 03 1987 11:2024
I called both Musical Concepts and the Mod Squad about a year ago
for prices to upgrade my Mission DAD7000R. I assume that their
upgrades and pricing are based on the Phillips unit and not the
    specific model in question.

At that time, Musical Concepts had a level II mod for $280 which
was supposed to add to the units openess, dynamic power, "lack of
confusion" (a quote from the rep on the line), tighten up the bass.

For an additional $100, you could purchase the level III mod which
replaces the circuit boards for the power supply.

And for an additional $100, you can get the level IV mod which gets
    you an outboard transformer.

One year warranty for parts and labor is included.

At the Mod Squad, your choices are more limited. You can get the
basic mod for $225, or you can add $75 and get a "Wayne" filter.
(I don't know what a Wayne filter is.)

This upgrade includes a 3 year unconditional warranty. Shipping
for the Mod Squad is under $10.00.

983.6Give 'em a call..ARCTIC::DODGEThu Dec 03 1987 20:3729
If your're interested in technical specifics then I would suggest
calling John Hillig, owner, Musical Concepts 314-831-1822 or writing
him at #1 Patterson Plaza, Florissant, MO 63031. Its a very small
company, John usually answers and would be willing to discuss details
of his modifications. Basically 0.5 hit it on the head, Level II
mod is $280, LIPS II power supply $100, OPS-4B outboard power supply.

Approximately 2 months ago I talked to John who had just finished
some lab testing on a tweeking of Level II mods and commented to
even superior performance over orginal Level II. (I'm somewhat
tempted to send my Maggie back for those changes.

When i was inside of my Maggie cleaning the lens, I took a gander
at the actual changes.. Approximately 24 different capacitors and
Tiffany output jacks were the obvious changes. There may be someother

resistor changes that i'm not aware of.. There really isn't that
much expense in actual component cost, but you're paying for John's
design/listening efforts and alot of his time. Besides its difficult
to get the substitude caps in low volumes.

I believe the expense is justified in the sonic virtues as compared
to the competition. Somehow I wished I'd bought the 460 at the
time as I don't find myself using the extra features of the 650
and applied the funds difference into improved power supply (OPS-4B
or my own design given the time.
