892.0. "Digital Broadway (wow)" by PSYCHE::WOODBURN () Thu Sep 03 1987 18:36

Just picked up a CD entitled "Digital Broadway" at Strawberries.
The CD consists of 14 songs from famous musicals (such as Cats,
Chess, West Side Story, Porgy & Bess etc.) performed by an
ensemble called the Orchestra Manhattan. This ensemble is
supposedly a collection of virtuoso musicians from in and around
the Big Apple. The cd's cover is white with gold lettering with
a lot if superlative, gimmicky prose. I was somewhat suspicious
of a disk with such a gaudy cover, but the list of songs
appealed to me so I bought it (what's a mere $ 16.70 anyway?).

    Well, here's my review.

               Performance: 10 Sound: 10

I believe this disk is the best sounding (out of my collection of
100 or so cds) one I own. The music is crystal clear, the dynamics
life-like, and the performance is superb. There are some guitar and
sax solos on this disk that will blow your mind. I can't rave
enough about this disk, as you can see.

I found the disk in the Easy Listening part of the Jazz section
at Strawberries. It seems to be kind of a rare disk, as I haven't
been able to spot it any place other than Strawberries (and only two
outlets at that). If anybody is really interested, I'll list
all the songs on the disk and supply any other info I can copy from
    the cover.

How about listing the manufacturer & serial #?
If it's CBS, those of us in the CBS CD club can order it from them.

The manufacturer is Manhattan Records, which is a division of Capitol
Records. The serial number is 7777-46288-2. By the way, the conductor
of the orchestra is a guy named Byron Olson. He is also the piano
soloist in a few of the songs.

These folks also had a Christmas album out last year...and like
Rob, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality. Thanks, Rob, for
the info - Digital Broadway sounds like another "must have" for
    my collection.....
