809.0. "E.G. does it yet again: "Man Jumping"" by DSSDEV::HALLGRIMSSON () Mon Jun 29 1987 21:19

E.G. has done it again. "World Service" by Man Jumping is the most
powerful debut album I have heard since "In the Court of the Crimson
King." I know nothing whatsoever about them, save that they are a
7-piece outfit. I haven't heard of any of the members, and couldn't
even tell you if they are a US or UK group. Being on E.G. suggests
UK, but there are some things on the liner that suggest otherwise.

Capsule comment: "_Cloud about Mercury_ meets _Earthworks_ at Penguin
Cafe -- house band retires in disarray."

This is an album of fast, spritely, jazz with an amazingly
authoritative use of tempo, rhythm and dynamics. It's music for the
body/mind/heart/soul all at once.

I'm interested in hearing any info about this band. Perhaps it's in
the U.K press? Haven't heard a thing here. I'd love to know who
the principles behind E.G. are. I bought this upon sight: "E.G.,
must be good."

On CD (and worth it!): EEG CD 50

Well, the album name and liner notes seem a bit cryptic, but Bill Bruford's
latest group is called "Earthworks". Perhaps this is some sort of Bruford-led
group? Bduford & Earthworks are appearing at The Paradise sometime next month,
in fact. What did you find this disc filed under? I'd be interested in
checking it out.

E.G.? Is this a group or a label? What does E.G. stand for?

    Confused
809.4E.G. as I know it.TSG::EIRIKURThu Jul 02 1987 20:0817
E.G., and Editions E.G. (sometimes EEG) are labels. Located in
the U.K., distributed here by Jem (distributors of other good things
like the Audion label among others). They must be fairly small,
their entire (seen here by me) list of artists has been King Crimson,
Brian Eno and spin-offs from both of those (Harrold Budd, Bill Bruford,
    Robert Fripp).

They seem to have signed up some new artists: Penguin Cafe Orchestra,
and Man Jumping, neither of which (visibly from the liner notes)
have anything to do with their previous artists. Whatever it stands
for, whoever they are, they have really fine taste, at least in
    *my* book.

Anyone in the U.K. know the story on E.G.?

I bought Earthworks and love it! It moves in some pieces and is
internally upsetting in others but overall it's great.

BTW - There is an article in the latest Music Technology on Mr. Bruford.
For those who don't get it and are musicians I recommend this 'zine,
for those who don't get it and aren't musicians but are interested
in the article send me E-Mail with your Mailstop and I'll send a copy
	of it.

There is a discussion about Bruford's EARTHWORKS in note 765.

Also, the producer listed as Dave Stewart for Man Jumping's album
WORLD SERVICE, is also the producer of Earthworks, as well as the
regular Bruford keyboardist on Feels Good to Me, One of a Kind,
etc. and should not be confused with the Eurythmics D.S.
