474.0. "Small Footprint CD player" by DARTH::SCHORR () Thu Sep 25 1986 20:22

    I need a CD for specific installation. I needs to be no more than
    11 inches by 11 inches with at least 6 inches for hight. I would
    prefer not to use a portable unit. The unit will be stored in the
    vertical position (attached to a swing down door). Does such a
    unit exist? The quality of sound is not crititcal since the system
    is poor. This is not my personal system. Thanks.

474.1Why not a portable?RADON::WEAVERLDP - Laboratory Data ProductsSat Sep 27 1986 00:225
    I think you would be a lot better off with a portable, it is more
    likely to take any abuse that being mounted on the door will give
    it.

    The door is solidly mounted and originally held a reel to reel tape
    deck. I would prefer to get a more impressive looking unit. I
    know that this has nothing to do with sound, etc. but this isn't
    for myself.

    There are quite a few smaller CD players on the market. They tend
    to be the cheaper models with fewer features. Just go to a store
    with a big selection and look.

474.4Forget the DoorDSSDEV::CHANWed Oct 01 1986 16:1620
    You will have trouble finding a CD player that is less than 11 inches
    long. A long time ago I was looking for a CD player 11 5/8" to
    match my Techinics u-series components. I had no luck last year
    and found that the closest I could get was 12" (I think there were
    two units, one my Magnavox and another by Technics.) Since that
    time, about a year ago, some company may have come out with one
    with a smaller foot print but I haven't seen one yet. My suggestion
    is to get the annual Audio magazine that has a directory of components
    avaiable this year, it will list most of the CD players,
    and see if there is one the size you want. I have last years and
    there wasn't any available, does any one know if this year's is
    out yet? A better suggestion is to forget the door and purchase
    a player sounds best to the person purchasing it. If you purchase
    stereo equipment that is a certain dimension, say 11x11x6, what
    you get is stereo equipment that is 11x11x6. If you purchase
    equipment that sounds good, what you get is equipment that sounds good.
    I am not the first person to say this in this file (and I'm sure
    I won't be the last) but I am a true believer in it.

	I recall seing a mini CD player in a catalog a month or two ago.
	It was not a Walkman type, but looked like two walkmans side by
	side. The disk loaded in the top like a normal casette tape would.
	It was not a "portable" since it did not run on batteries.

	HOWEVER I can't remember what the make was, and this is an English
	catalog. I will find out what the player was if you like.

	I seem to remember the dimesions made it a little smaller than an
	A4 sheet of paper (do you use A4 ??, print this on an LA50, make
        the sheet narrower by cutting of extra margins..)

    Thanks for the suggestion regarding Audio magazine. I was looking
    through the guide last night and didn't even think to look up the answer
    to my own question. As to the question of sound it isn't really
    a question. The unit will be going into my parent's home intercom
    system and the speakers are so poor that any CD player will exceed
    their capacity to reporduce the sound. My parents are happy with
    the system and have shown no interest in getting even reasonable
    equipment, so the fact that it will fit into the space available
    will be "wonderful" to them. One can lead a horse to water but
    one can not make him/her drink.

474.9Sony CDP-7F ??QUOIN::BELKINJosh BelkinFri Oct 03 1986 16:2314
	You might be interested in the Sony CDP-7F player. It is
	about 8" wide x 11 " deep x 2 1/2 " high.  It is A/C only,
	and the top opens up just like the D-5. The thing is kinda
	like an inflated D5, in fact. You put the disk in as if
	you are just putting a record onto a regular record player.
	This wouldn't work so well if the player was anything but
	horizontal, come to think of it! I got one of these for my
	parents, who were non-critcal except for my ma is a Sony
	fanantic and it also had to be a small sized player. I got
	it at Cuomos for $230. yeah, not a great price for a plain
	Cd player but it suits my parents needs well.

474.10How were you going to load the CD's?DSSDEV::CHANFri Oct 03 1986 17:4713
    Now that .8 mentioned it, how do you plan to load the CD's. I've
    played with a bunch of players (especially at Leachmeres) and there
    are basically 2 types (excluding the one for cars) The ones where
    the draw opens and you place the cd on the tray and gravity is holding
    the cd on the tray (in most full size players) and the one where
    the top opens and you place the cd on the spindle (most portables).
    In both cases the cd would drop out in if the player was in the
    verticle position. The only solution I can think of is to get the
    six pack from Pioneer or the 10 pack from Sony where you load the
    CD's in a magazine and then place it in the player. I don't think
    they meet your foot print though.

   I think he means it will be played in the correct position but stored
   vertically.
474.12Door Pulls DownDARTH::SCHORRTue Oct 07 1986 13:3310
    Re .11 and .10

    The door is hinged at the bottom and swings down into the horizontal.
    When open it is level. The box that houses it has acess to AC and
    input (and output) RCA plugs to the the reciever. The Sony Unit
    sounds interesting. I will check it out. Thanks to all for the
    help.
