Not to be negative, but are you sure they didn't give a release

The OFFICIAL date from a Capitol press release is 27-Feb-1987.
This is the first four British Albums. The remaining ones have not
set date yet (my guess is by X-mas).

My understanding is that the argument with Yo-yo Oh-no was just
a rumor and that the issue had been resolved 5 years ago.

EMI was punishing the Beatles for some previous problems.
Why? I don't know. It's pretty silly not to have cashed in one
the building market for these CDs by now.

But that comes from one of my CD sources here in So. Cal.

The official story is that capitol was waiting to open their own
    CD plant.

500,000 of each of the titles will be shipped to retailers.

ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT last Friday had also mentioned late February
for the release of the first four Beatles CD's. I don't recall
exactly what the problem was, but it seemed to be a question of
how much the Beatles should get as payment. It's my guess that
Capitol wanted to give them the same rate as for the LP's (based
on the retail price), as oppsed to a new rate absed on the CD
    retail price.

599.8EMI? Imports?TLE::WARDTue Jan 13 1987 12:4211
So, what exactly is EMI going to do? For some reason, 500,000 does not
seem like a heckuva lot to me (not for these babies, at least!). What will
we see as British imports? ...other imports?

Also, does anybody know what became of Capitol's plan to release the
following albums FIRST?

     - Abbey Road
     - The Beatles ("The White Album")
     - Sgt. Pepper
     - '62-'66 and '67-'70 greatest hits sets
599.9Alot is Alot.LA730::GOLDSMITHReserved for Future Use.Tue Jan 13 1987 17:076
The 500,000 per title figure is only the initial release. 2 million
CDs is alot. My understanding is that this will be a domestic release
and that the releases in other countries will be timed to match.

According to an article in the Boston Globe this morning,
`... with the remaining studio albums due - in chronological
order - by the end of the year'.

This is obviously the best way to do it (for Capitol). Everyone
will buy the first releases so they can have some Beatles on CD.
Then, when the more popular albums come out, everyone will by
those because they want to listen to them. If the popular
albums came out first then the older albums would sell fewer
        copies.

Agreed. BTW, the older albums are a lot shorter. I'm quite
sure that Please Please Me and With The Beatles would fit on a single
disc, but they'll never do that. The Red album (62-66) would also
fit on a single disc, and that seems like a reasonable thing to do,
but we are talking about Capitol here...

Personally, I think they can shove the greatest hits collections,
but I'm sure they'll release 'em anyway. I thought they'd release
those first, just to attract the audience that's desperate for Beatles,
and then release the individual albums, so everyone would have to
buy those in addition! I'm glad they're not doing that. A guy
I spoke to at BCD conjectured that they think holding off on the
greatest hits albums will get more people to buy all the individual
ones. I guess there are some people who don't really want EVERYTHING,

of the `Greatest Hits'. It may take a while (I purchased

money). The idea of only wanting some of the late Beatles

    :-)

Actually, there are a few early songs missing from the British albums
that were released as singles there. Of course they're on the US
albums, since Capitol made up their own albums to make more money.

599.16The "Complete" Beatles?PIXEL::COHENRichard CohenThu Jan 15 1987 02:0022
Let me expound a little on .15. If you do not buy the greatest
hits records, you will NOT hear "I Want to Hold Your Hand". Many
times the Beatles would release songs on singles or EPs in England
which were not duplicated on albums. Capitol reordered the stuff
to put all the songs onto a single format, which was the LP. They
missed a few, which did end up on various hits packages or the Rarities
LP. At the same time they cut down the number of tracks from 14
to 12 per album, thus making several more albums to sell.

One solution is to take the single and EP tracks that are
missing and put them onto the CD of the appropriate time frame.
I have done this on cassette tapes and each album still comes out
    to around 45 minutes.

Another solution would be to double up the albums, and then take
all of the missing songs and stick them onto one CD. I think that
they would all fit. While they're at it, I think they could skip
side 2 of the Yellow Submarine album, which is all George Martin
    instrumentals.

want these as much as the Beatles stuff...

They are taking orders for the four Beatles CDs. They expect the

I heard a rumour (source below) that the first four Beatles
albums to be released would be in MONO, with the stereo version
to follow later in the year. Not sure if this applies to just the
UK or the entire solar system. However, if it is true, I for one
will suffer and wait for the stereo version: I'm not buying a mono
CD when the LP is stereo!!

I am not an expert on Beatles recordings, but weren't a lot of the
"stereo" LPs of the time (pre-1966, let's say) actually "electronically
simulated stereo"? If so, I'd rather have the mono. My recollection
is that "popular" LPs weren't generally released in true stereo
until the latter half of the 1960s. (I remember buying "Surrealistic
Pillow" by Jefferson Airplane in mono - a stereo version was also
    available.)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe all of the recordings the
Beatles made with George Martin (that would include the first four British
LP's) were made live and in true stereo -- with a two-track recorder.

It's easy to tell, for example, that "I Saw Her Standing There" was recorded
in true stereo. Fact is, it sounds as good as some multi-track, overdubbed,
overdone stereo recordings made today.

    to be stereo.

My source is a picture of the original master tape boxes, and the
album covers as release by Parlophone, not to mention all the albums
release by Mobile Fidelity "The Beatle's / The collection"
599.30Some mono?RSTS32::LABATue Jan 20 1987 01:2738
Bob may be right, but I can't find a stereo version of "She Loves
You" anywhere. Don't bother looking in your Mobile Fidelity Beatles'
Collection, it wasn't included. That and several other songs released
on a Parlophone LP called, "A Collection of Beatles Oldies" wasn't
    included in the MF collection.

I have four versions of that song, all in mono: 1) the US single,
    2) the above mentioned Parlophone LP, 3) The Capitol red double
album collection (Beatles 62-67 or whatever), 4) Meet the Beatles
LP. My Meet the Beatles LP is all mono, so I can't be sure that
the song was recorded in mono.

By the way, I've compiled a list of songs from the Beatles discography
that wasn't included in the MF collection, along with the US and
UK source for the song. I compiled it a year ago, so some of the
songs may be included in some of the newer Beatls' "Rarities" or
other collection LPs. I'll include it as a separate reply for those
    interested.

If anyone can find a stereo version of "She Loves You," I'd be
interestedin hearing where you found it. I'd also like to know
about any other Beatles' songs that appear to be mono-only.

Re: which versions of the Beatles LPs they come out with on CD, I
hope they go after the Parlophone format (it appears to be the
case based on the list of first four CDs to be released). More
important though is that we get a COMPLETE collection. You can't
do that by choosing one or the other. There are some songs that
were never released on any Parlophone or Capitol LP; they were only
    released on singles or EPs.

I also hope they go after the studio recording masters and don't try
to "improve" anything. George Martin did wonders in a recording
studio; trying to improve his work would be an injustice to his talent.
I'll gladly trade off some hiss to stay close to the original music.

    Paul
