98.0. "Herb Alpert" by SYBIL::MUNYAN () Tue Mar 26 1985 00:33

Is anyone out there familiar with Herb Alpert. Reciently purchased a copy
of Bullish and really enjoyed it. However he has quite a few other recordings
none of which I know anything about. Does anyone have any suggestions as
to which ones are good, fair, so-so, etc...

If possible I'd like to get ones that follow along the same tempo as the
Bullish Album.

I used to like Whipped Cream, but I have not seen it on CD. Had some good
ol' horn playin' from Herb.

"Rise" is very good. "Blow Your Horn" is was good, but
					       ^ignore this word...
not as rememberable as "Rise". These two and "Bullish"
are the only ones I've seen. However; I may have heard
a rumor about a "Greatest Hits" CD.

I picked up a copy of Blow your own horn last nite... It's not
quite as good at Bullish but you'd have to go some to beat that.

I haven't been able to find Rise or Whipped Cream anywhere. Although
everyone seems to know about it. They must be popular albums.

whipped cream originally came out around 1965/66 (it was the first 33 1/3
album i ever bought). at that time herb alpert had a group known as
"herb alpert and the tijuana brass". they produced about a dozen albums
before disbanding in the mid-seventies. i'd rate whipped cream as the
best of that period.

Herb Alpert, hmmm....

I am a lifelong (well, since I was 6) fan of Herb Alpert and the TJB.

I have 99% of his albums. Only 3 or (maybe 4) have made it to CD yet.

The first dozen or so albums were all done with the original Tijuana Brass.

They are:

	The Lonely Bull
Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass Volume 2
	South of the Border
	Whipped Cream & Other Delights
	Going Places
What Now My Love (My personal favorite of the oldies...)
      *	SRO
      *	Sounds Like Herb Alpert & the TJB
      *	Herb Alpert's Ninth
	Beat of the Brass
Herb Alpert's Christmas Album	(resurrected every Christmas)
      *	You Smile -- The Song Begins
      *	Warm

	* = Not in print

Several 'greatest hits' albums came out, some of which weren't necessarily
called this. They are:

	Herb Alpert's Foursider
	Solid Brass
Herb Alpert & the TJB Greatest Hits
	... Volume 2 (of above)

I have seen all of the above in print recently.

After a hiatus of several years (during which he 'lost his lip', had an auto
accident, got married, and quit smoking), Herb Alpert had a renaissance.

The style on these albums is rather different than the older ones, and it
can be seen emerging from the first album in this set to the last.

      *	Just You and Me
     C	Rise
	Beyond
	Magic Man
	Fandango
     C	Blow Your Own Horn
     C	Bullish
*= Out of Print, C= Available on CD

"Rise" marks the (commercially successful) beginning of his renaissance.
The title song was a #1 HIT back in the year it came out - the ONLY 'Disco'
style instrumental tune to have that distinction. While it was classified
as such, it really isn't a disco-style song. It's too musical for that low
a classification.

I would REALLY LIKE to talk to other people who are Herb Alpert fans. I
thought I was the only one in DEC. I even went so far as to go to his concert
last year on the Boston Common.

If anyone wants more information, drop a message to me (ARGUS::FRANCINI).
I don't get into this note file often enough to respond quickly.

For jazz fans:

I just picked up a CD (I've also seen it on LP) called STAY TUNED, by
Chet Atkins, C.G.P. ["Country Guitar Player", I assume], with a little
help from some other jazz guitarists, including George Benson (on two
tunes), Earl Klugh (on one), and Mark Knopfler (on two).

For those for whom it matters, the style is "lounge" (or "cocktail")
jazz, very similar to the Chester & Lester albums he's done with Les Paul.

Picked up herb alpert & TJ brass classics vol.1 from the A&M
25th anniversary collection. The sound quality is good with some
hiss that was easy to fix with the hi filter(forgot where it was).
Over all I'm not ashamed to add this to my collection and reccomend
it to any HA & TJB fan.
This is like a greatest hits album and has the following cuts in
    the order they appear:
    The lonely bull
    acapulco
    taste of honey
    green peppers
    the work song
    i'm getting sentimental over you
    whipped cream
    lollipops and roses
    what now my love
    memories of madrid
this guys in love with you
    the maltese melody
    so whats new?
    spanish flea
    tijuana taxi
    more and more amor
    jerusalem
    zorba the greek
    tangerine
    mexican shuffle
    marching thru madrid
    mame
    a banda
    casino royal
    love potion #9

Just picked up this "Classics" Vol 1 from the A&M label last weekend,
which features Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass. I'm very pleased
with it sonically and with the selections made. It features everything
that appears on the 2 vinyl HA&TJB Greatest Hits lp's.

Even tho' there's not much in the way of liner notes, nor any allusion
to digital remastering, it sounds as if all discs in this "Classics"
series have been digitally remastered. I also have the Joe Cocker disc,
the Joan Baez disc and the Carpenters double disc set. All of these
sound much cleaner than their vinly counterparts. I recommend this
particular disc to people who like trumpet music. I'm not a real
big fan of Mexican Mariachi music per se', however I like the TJB's
style. For authentic Mariachi stuff - get Linda Ronstadts "Canciones
    ......" CD.

Oh, just FYI, the group was known ONLY as The Tijuana Brass on their
first few 45 releases, with their 1st release being "The Lonely
    Bull."

Has anybody seen the Alpert album "Fandango" on CD? This is my favorite
one.
