Though the rumor is that they might start lending their CDs this fall
(which means soon, hopefully!)

I am out in the Chicago area. There are many libraries with CD
collections, and they all loan out their material. The only restrictions
that we have found is that some of them limit media loans to their own
residents, and will not loan CDs thru the inter-library loan program. That
menas you are stuck with your local library. BTW there are some that loan
videotapes, usually for a fee, but one actually loans them to residents for
FREE!!!!!

I spoke to the woman in charge of the CD collection at the Nashua
Public Library and she said that they will begin to loan their
CDs as soon as their new computerized reservation system is installed
at the library. The system is for all media, but will make their
recordkeeping easier. I spoke to her at length, and they are still
buying more CDs and they're willing to listen to suggestions. You
must be a Nashua resident with a Library card to listen to them...
even if you don't leave the building.

They will probably begin loaning them in Feb.

I live in Arlington (Soon to be moving to Nashua - sigh!) and the
Robbins library lends CD's. They are part of the Minuetman susyem
which comprises several towns in the area (rather well-to-do towns
who value education and do dump $$$ into their public libraries...
    as well as good tastes).

I have taked CD's from both Arlington and Newton libraries. IT's
a wonderful service. CD loans are for three weeks.

    Since I'm a resident I don't know if it's restricted to residents
and members of the Minuetman system. I would guess that all you
    need is a library card.

Why is the Nashua library so restrictive?

There have not been any recent entries in this note. What's the
current state of affairs with CD's and the Nashua library?

The Nashua Library will now loan discs for free. You must have
a library card which is free to residents, and $40 for non-residents
of Nashua. You can borrow up to 3 discs at a time for a period
of one week and their selection is fairly good.

They have two Sony CD players at a nearby table with overstuffed
chairs next to them for listening while in the library. They will
loan you headphones, but I usually bring my own.

The Public Library in Worcester, MA. has been in the CD loan business
for about a year. The selection is mainly classical and jazz, and
numbers only 100 or so. However, there is usually something on the
racks. They do not have any facilities for listening, which would
in my opinion be a welcome addition.

They also have a collection of operas and plays on videotape (VHS),
that they'll loan for two days. The loan period for CDs is the same
as that for books - two weeks.

By the way, any MA. resident can walk in and get a temporary library
card and borrow CDs or video tapes for free. All you need is something
which has your MA address on it (eg. your telephone bill). The library
is located near the Galleria (the shopping mall in downtown Worc.)

	Enjoy,
	Sudhir

The Marlboro, MA library also has a small collection of CD's for
loan; two weeks at a time. Just classical, though.
