300.0. "Boom Boxes" by SARAH::P_DAVIS (Peter Davis) Thu Mar 06 1986 13:27

    I've listened to the Toshiba, Sony, Panasonic, anc GE boom boxes.
    For my money, the Toshiba has the best sound (primarily due to the
    large, wood-encased speakers, which are closely matched by the GE).
    However, the two samples I've seen both had a problem with the latch
    on the CD compartment lid.

    Does anyone know anything about any of these, or any other CD boom
    boxes?

    So no one's even faintly interested in boom boxes, eh? Well, do
    you all have a complete stereo, including CD player, in each room?
    The only other alternative I can think of is a portable, but I HATE
    HEADPHONES!

300.2Ill bite...GRAMPS::WCLARKWalt ClarkTue Mar 25 1986 19:3414
    OK. I dont care much for BOOM BOXES myself but I heard one that
    made me rethink implementation of a stereo on the boat. The
    Acoustic Wave by Bose makes the others sound pale. It doesnt
    have a CD player yet, but the SONY folks have been camping at
    the Mountain off and on for the past year so I wouldnt be surprised
    to see a D5/D7 clone grafted onto the 'wave in the next year or
    so.

    By the way I went with the Bose 1401 amp/speaker setup with a
    EPI LSR-24 Auto Receiver (AM/FM cassette). The Sony/Pioneer
    Auto CD stuff is still more Gee-wizz than honest sound to my
    ear, and mounting the 'wave was cumbersome.

300.3Bose unit is GREAT!PAUPER::GETTYSBob Gettys N1BRMTue Mar 25 1986 23:167
                I just had the opportunity to listen to the Bose
        Acoustic Wave unit for a whole afternoon! I was VERY impressed
        with it's sound! (Now if only it had a CD and cost about
        $200????) [For those that don't know, it's price is $700+ fully
        equipped!]

300.4Plug a D7 into a boom boxCSSE32::RHINEJack Rhine - DTN:381-1408Wed Mar 26 1986 01:524
I have a JVC personal component system that stacks together with a speaker on
each side, a handle, and a battery pack built into the cassette deck. (In fact,
I never separate the pieces.) The D7s plugged into the AUX input does a great
job. Yes, having an integral CD player would be nice!
300.5Magnavox has a CD Boom Box tooCRVAX1::KAPLOWBob Kaplow - DDOMon Mar 31 1986 22:138
    My wife plunked down $150 for an Aiwa Boom Box to use as a set of
    portable speakers for the D-5 I got her (12 and 15 months ago
    respectively).

    The literature I just got from NAP / Magnavox had a CD player Boom Box
    from them as well. I seem to remember a model number like 9555 or so,
    and have no idea what the price of such a unit is, nor have I seen
    or heard one.
300.6An Acoustic Wave with Sony CDGRAMPS::WCLARKWalt ClarkFri Apr 25 1986 16:4813
    I stumbled into a discussion with one of the engineers here in SHR
    the other day who has an Acoustic Wave and added a Sony D5 CD to
    this mini system. He seems to have a refined ability to listen
    and appreciate music and sound systems. He is in love with this
    setup and has no other stereo in the house. His main positive
    comments related to tremendous dynamic range for what is basically
    a portable system, the remarkable bottom end, and the detail of
    the sound. The only draw back he expressed was the closeness of
    the 2 channels which limits the stereo stage width and depth.

    Just thought I would pass that along.

300.7Where can I find the Magnavox 9555?SARAH::P_DAVISreally SARAH::P_DAVISWed May 28 1986 17:579
    I've gotten the info sheet from NAP/Magnavox on the model 9555,
    which is their boom box entry. It looks like exactly what I'm looking
    for. The only problem is that I haven't seen one anyplace.

    Anyone got any idea where, and for how much, this unit can be
    bought?

    Thanks.

300.8DAK has Magnavox BoxSURPLS::WAXMANMon Jul 06 1987 19:2012
    DAK is selling the magnavox boom box for $199.00. The same unit
    is also found at Sears. I purchased the box from DAK for my office
    because I wanted the ability to listen to tapes as well as CD's.
    With AKG K3 headphones, I am satisfied with the sound. I have played
    a number of CD's with no problems, listened to HI bias tapes that
    I recorded at home using Dolby B and have made several recordings
    of CD's on normal bias tapes while listening to the disk. The system
    has provision to use external speakers. This is important since
    the speakers on the boom box are fair to poor. However, this box
    is a reasonable alternative to a CD player in the office. If anyone
    is interested in seeing the unit, send mail to surpls::waxman.
    Warning: Like EG, I only play classical music.

300.10PANASONIC FD80RHODES::BOYDWed Oct 14 1987 21:5425
    	I have looked at the Magnavox as well. At the store where I
    made my purchase, there was also a Sony box with CD and a new Panasonic
    unit model RX-FD80. I was able to compare the sound of the three
    units and desided upon the Panasonic. I am glad I chose it, as it
    fits my needs. At the time of the in store demos, the Magnavox unit
    broke and I did not like the sound that much. The equalizer does
    not do that much to the sound and the Sony unit which was a "Box"
    three piece came apart too easily.
    	The Panasonic unit, which I have enjoyed greatly, is a top of
    the line unit. It has five band equalizer, auto reverse tape and
    a special synchro switch which lets you tape off of the CD, and
    when you stop the CD or search to an other selection , the tape
    stops until you start the CD again. It is a good sounding unit and
    the Panasonic ambience switch improves the stereo effect.
    	The only drawbacks to the unit are that it has a master power
    switch so that it does not shut off by itself at the end of a tape
    or a CD. The recordings from CD to tape are not a great as I would
    like due to the fact that it has auto record. However with the audio
    outputs I can connect it to my home stereo to record. It also has
    a Line input so that you can hook up a turntable or something.
    	Now for the bad news, it has a list price of about $400.oo,
    but I am not sure of that price since I got the unit at cost. I
    would still reccomend this unit. It is one piece so there are no
    speakers to fall off. It does not have speakers jacks which seems
    to be normal for any Panasonic stereo with Ambience.

    Sony (not sure of #) Lectra City for $269 has detachable speakers,
