333.0. "new magnavox players (cdpxyz)" by NULL::MCGRATH () Thu Apr 24 1986 03:07

The following two notes about the new (imminent) maggie cd players
and 16 bit dac's came from usenet net.audio.
_________________________________________________________________

I just spoke with someone at North American Philips (Magnavox) about
the new models. Here's the poop:

Magnavox CDP650 due: June price: $429 features: FTS, remote
Magnavox CDP540 due: July price: ??? features: remote, no FTS
Magnavos CDP440 due: July price: $279 features: no FTS, no remote

All feature the new chip set, giving them 4x-oversampling, true 16-bit
DACs (a dual DAC in a single package), new higher-performance
error-correction, and nicer looks.

Second note about 16 bit dac's:

1. All CDs are encoded with 16 bit samples.
2. Machines based on the Philips design use 14 bits, but use 4 times as
   many samples. By using oversampling and noise shaping, they achieve
   the same performance (96db sn) as a 16 bit machine.

Think of it this way. The output of the digital filter on a 14bit machine
will yield four 14 bit samples for each 16 bit sample read from the disc.
If you were to average the four 14 bit samples, you would come up with a
number extremely close to the original 16 bit sample. In addition, the
'staircase' effect will be at a much higher frequency, where it can be
removed with a gentle analog filter.

    What is TFS?

    FTS - Favorite Track Selection. A cute feature where the player
    remembers the program you entered for each of up to 250 (I think)
    discs, and will automatically use that program when you next play
    that disc. Great for playing Synchronicity. There's a writeup
    of the 650 in the latest High Fidelity, I think. Looks like a winner.

    Question. Will the difference between the 14 bit dac and the 16
    bit dac be readily audible?

    Will it be worth waiting a little longer to get the cdpxxx over
    the fd2041?

    will the fd2041 be even cheaper when the cdpxxx comes out?

333.4Worth waiting, but 2041 probably won't cheapenAMBER::KAEPPLEINThu Apr 24 1986 17:4020
    I have preliminary spec sheets on the new chipset. I think it probably
    will be a better sounding machine. Several reasons:

    1. The best error correction in the industry.
    2.  18-bit S/N potential from 16bit DACs + 4x oversampling.  It
    	might be audible. HFN&RR reviewed the new units that appeared
    	in Europe in Feb. and found only 14bit linearity from the DACs.
    	Philips admits 16bits was mostly for marketing reasons.
    3. DACs have seperate ground pins for digital and analog grounds,
    	so hopefully, digital noise will be much lower. Really depends
    	how they lay-out their boards - fewer chips will give them more
    	room though.

    I suspect they will use the same plastic transport and boxes as
    the 1041 and 2041.

    Unknowns are the quality of the single DIP 10-amp/opamp, passive
    components, and power/grounding.

333.5ugh - the waiting game!THORBY::MARRAAll I have to be is what You made me.Thu Apr 24 1986 19:123
    oh well, guess i'll wait - hope they get here sooner than july though.

    Anybody seen or have an update on the availability of the new
    Magnavox players yet?
