48.0. "What's New?" by CYGNUS::LAMBERT () Mon Nov 26 1984 13:00

By the way, the What's New CD by Linda Ronstadt was mastered by none other than
Doug Sax (read Mr. Once_anti_digi). I smiled knowingly when I found this out,
and thought I would pass it along.

Has anyone found a good way to store these CD critters? I have them piled up,
and was wondering if some ingenious sole had found a home-made way (READ CHEAP)
to stack, pile, connect, or mount the fragile plastic boxes in such a way as
to facilitate ease of use. (I.E. "..you take 15 old Acme grommet fastener
boxes, secure them with silly putty at the ends.....and there you have it,
a CD holder for thirty-eight cents.) I have seen real sexy oak boxes that hold
around 40 CD's, but they go for about 80 bucks, and I would rather put that
money toward a CD-5 for car and body.

Check out Rockin' Mania in Framingham. They have CD storage racks for
around $20.

You can fit 27 (or was it 28) CDs in a Pro-Keds sneaker box, with
the hinges facing up so you can see the titles. Most shoeboxes are
too wide. This is the cheapest method I have found of storing them.

At the Coop they sell these stacking modules that hold about 12 CD's each.
They interlock horizontally and vertically to form a set of square pigeonholes
for CD's. This is the cheapest thing I have seen so far, and it sounds very
useful. (A 12 x 12 array of those things would be a cubist's dream!)

But

To fill a 12x12 array with 12x12x12 CD's would be a CD nuts dream..

	Thats a lot of CDs

That's why it's an attractive system for holding them. I plan on buying some
of those cubes soon. They (and any other CD storage system I've seen) have
one drawback: they don't do well with 2-disc sets. Because the sides of 2
disc CD boxes are flat, they wont fit into any case which is slotted for single
CD containers. This leaves one with 2 alternatives: 1) buying empty CD cases
and putting 1 CD in each box, after transferring the label inserts, etc., or
2) not putting any 2-CD sets into the storage system. This is particularly
a problem when you own several 2-disc sets: Pink Floyd:"The Wall", "Star Wars",
Elton John:"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", etc.

Observations, comments, etc?

Wouldn't it be possible to 'mill away' or cut away one
of the dividers between the standard 1 CD/slot slots ??

I wonder, pro-keds probably go for about 30 bucks or so........

Do you think an old Nike box would work????

They cost even MORE! Pretty expensive if you buy the shoes simply for the
box to hold CD's!

Re: .6

I also thought of breaking away some of the plastic dividers, but rejected it.
Whenever you bought one more CD the position of the double CD would shift by
one (I like to keep a strict order for my CDs). Before long all the dividers
would be gone.

I currently keep my CDs on a shelf -- it makes shifting everything over
by one slot trivial rather than a large pain. A bookend (or a double CD)
on the end keeps them from tipping over.

Lechmere have a 40 capacity rack on sale for $19.88 (reg $24.99) (in
dark oak finish), doesn't look as though it has provision for those
multi-disk sets though.. The shoe box works well..

They (Lechmere) also have CDs at 15% off ('til December 8th.).

Gee, even Sears have them now.. on sale.. 12% off.. ('til December 8th.),
I will have to check this out.. (also $200 off on their CD player)..

If you ask nice at a shoe store, they usually have a bunch of shoe boxes around
that cutomers before you didn't want that they are happy to get rid of. I
haven't gotten around to covering the pro-keds box with anything to make it
look less like a shoe-box, but it is exactly the right size, holds 28 CDs,
and the price was right (free!). I'm thinking of constructing some oak
boxes of the same size that will match the stereo bench better if I can't
fnd something reasonable to disguise the shoeboxes, but that shouldn't be hard,
this time of year - foil wrapping paper would probably do nicely.\

48.12Carrying boxes for CDs..CHEAP!PARSEC::PESENTIWed Oct 15 1986 10:2012
Cuomo's in Salem NH (rt 28) has carrying cases for CDs that work well in your
car. The box sells for about $12 and claims to hold 16 CDs. If you remove
the fuzz coated plastic insert, it'll hold 25, sideways. Once the case is
nearly full, the slipping and sliding stops. I bought 3 cases for future
expansion. One was perfect, the second had minor glue deposits which were
easily removed with my trusty Swiss army knife, and one had some exposed
staples which were taken care of with some black plastic tape. I now use
these to lug my cds in the car.

If you add a thin layer of foam rubber (like the kind found in
expensive camera cases) to the top & bottom of your oak boxes, the
compression will keep the cases upright and also hold cases without
regard to the number of disks in each.

48.14New CD bagsPARSEC::PESENTIJPSun Jan 11 1987 15:5315
I was at Cuomo's again recently and they no longer have the
box I originally got. What they have now is a selection of
boxes/bags made of Cordura nylon type material with rigid
black plastic inserts for holding disks. You could probably
get lots more disks in the bag without the insert, but you
would loose the rigid frame. The frame has no options for
2 cd sets, and would be destroyed by all but the most careful
attempts at modification. The bags come in 6, 15, and 30
CD sizes (approx). The 30 is just a larger bag around 2 of
15 cd frames. The 15 was priced at $11.99. The bags seal
	with a zipper.
