1461.0. "Cheap CD's in bulk in the Nashua area?" by LESLIE::LESLIE () Thu Jan 05 1989 18:18

    Having just sold a bunch of albums, I'm looking to spend about $400 on
    CD's on mey visit to New England w/c 16th Jan.

    Where will I get the best deal in bulk? Rockit Records?

    I figured NOT Strawberries or any chain, as I'm looking for bulk

    Bob, Noteworthy buys from Nashua Compact Disk??? DOn't you mean
    it the other way around? I've never talked to the NCD people, but
    it seems to me that they are less likely to be distributors then
    Noteworthy.

No, I thought the same thing. A friend and I were talking to one
of the owners about CDs and I mentioned that I know a place to get
them cheaper than his store sells them (noteworthy was on my mind).
And he said to me...."let me guess...Noteworthy" and I said "yeah"
and he said "we sell them their disks".

I agree it does seem like it ought to be the other way around but
when I think about it I guess it doesn't really matter which way
it is....either one could do the service the other one does....

1461.9Okay, NCD - How's it different than Noteworthy?XANADU::COFFLERYa' gotta help me, I'm a toon!Fri Jan 06 1989 16:3211
Okay, I understand that Nashua/Manchester/Concord Compact Disc is the
distributor for Noteworthy.

Which is cheaper? How do their services differ? Does NCD have stores (rather
than offer a by-mail-only service)?

Personally, I don't care much who gets what from who. All I really care about
is where I can get CDs most inexpensively. I'd probably prefer a store (if it
was close, and both Manchester and Nashua are close) to mail-order (so I can
read the titles and stuff before purchasing) if the prices are the same, but I
prefer lower prices to everything else (buy a lot of CDs, and the cost adds up).

    Nashua Compact Disc is not as cheap as Noteworthy, which makes sense
    since store-front property is more expensive to rent. Also, Noteworthy
    has better selection, going by the few titles I saw in the NCD store.
    NCD can probably get stuff if you ask them, and if you want to make
    a bulk order they may be able to match Noteworthy's prices.

1461.11Since When Do Wholesalers Buy From Retailers?AQUA::ROSTMarshall rules but Fender controlsFri Jan 06 1989 17:569

    Not to get off the track but since Noteworthy is a rack jobber,
    I find it hard to believe that they buy CDs from a dealer like
    Nashua Compact Disc. Particularly since I *know* they get some
    of there stuff from Rounder ( afriend works in their shipping dept.).

    Not to say that Nashua Compact Disc an't give you good prices, though.

1461.13retailer may equal wholesalerREGENT::GETTYSBob Gettys N1BRM 235-8285Mon Jan 09 1989 09:2711
                I know nothing about the deal between NCD and Noteworthy
        (whatever it is); but I do know something about "retailers"
        acting as "wholesalers". I know of many instances where a retail
        store and a wholesaler share the same property, personel, stock,
        etc. It is a very common thing for someone in a reasonable
        location to do. Often the retail and the wholesale sections have
        different names and phone numbers but in fact are the same
        entity (perhaps more separate in the legal sense than the
        physical).

	RE: why would noteworthy buy disks from X.

	Aside from .-1 which makes sense - I don't know
	WHY. I didn't say they were the *lone* supplier
	to noteworthy (I didn't ask either - and it would
	have been a good question to ask).

	Why is it hard to believe someone has an operation
	where they charge someone like Noteworthy far less
	because of the qty they purchase and charge you
	far more because you buy one of a certain disk?

	Next time in I will ask,
	bob.
