That's one of the symptoms of either a dirty disc, a dirty laser.

A blast of air on the laser assembly may help. Check the disc first.

1151.2Same problem here, too.HAZEL::CLARKThu Apr 14 1988 13:0411
I don't know, I think it might be the player itself.
I have a Technics also, without a remote, and it tends to skip
also, on different disks. Yet sometimes it will play the same
    disk without any problems.

Mine is a front loading, like most players. How do you get at
the laser assembly to blast it with air?

    Thanks,

    Alan S.

If you can't get at it, and it's still under warranty, then I
    wouldn't take it apart.

I have seen a laser cleaning disc. It's a disc with a little
brush on it. You put the disc in, and if your player automatically
reads the index, it cleans the lens then. Otherwise hit play, and
the player will try and play the disc, clean the lens, then reject
it because there's no information on it.

I bought a JVC disk changer, and it would occasionally reject a
disk. It then got into an infinite skip on a brand new disc. I
took it in, then told me it was probably a dirty lens, and popped
their cleaning disc in. It's worked fine since.

I didn't ask how mush they cost, but they had them in stock.

1151.5Herrington has it...STAR::BIGELOWBruce Bigelow, DECnet-VAXThu Apr 14 1988 18:419
I've never seen a cleaning disc in a store - maybe others have.
I also don't have one, but it can be mail ordered from Herrington,
3 Symmes Drive, Londonderry, NH 03053. Or call 603-437-4939.

    It's order # A313 "Laser Cleaning Disc". Price $29.95 plus $2.45
    minimum shipping charge.

    They take Mastercard and Visa.

I've seen the cleaning discs in lots of stores, including Rockit
Records in Nashua and Tower Records in Boston.

I too have a Technics that will sometimes skip. I have a lens cleaning
disc, but this doesn't always do the trick. I believe that the problem
seems to be caused by dust on the drawer that holds the disc. You
may want to try cleaning this with a rag with a little windex on
it. Another thing that I have noticed is that if a disk begins to
skip, I can sometimes "cure" the problem by having the player read
the entire disc at fast-forward, and replaying it.

1151.10Maybe the heat ?VISA::BIJAOUITomorrow Never KnowsWed Apr 20 1988 14:0917
    Re .0

I had this problem some time ago with my SL-P2 (only time I ever had
problems with it --knock some wood).

I had put the unit between the amp (a Technics) and a cassette deck
(Technics as well) --nothing between each. I guess it was because of
the heat. I made this day some recordings (for my car) on cassette,
and thus was running the whole stuff since 3-4 hrs. Then suddenly, it
was mistracking, going to some random place, even in quick search mode.
I looked at the specs of the laser device, and found out that after
all, the temperature range for normal operation might have been reached.
I moved the unit, and had no problems so far.

    Just an idea,

    Pierre.

I've got a Technics SLP 117, or something like that. It works
fine after 60 days of possibly moderate usage. The only time I
can get it to skip is by taping the drawer itself.

I wish the buttons were not black. They are kinda' hard to find
    in dim light.

I have a similar problem with my Technics CD, but only with one
particular disk. I've tried two copies of the disk but both jump
around, mainly on the first two or three tracks.

If I put the player into "repeat" mode, the disk will play almost
perfectly the second time around !
