609.0. "What was that song?" by PAMPAM::HALDANE (Typos to the Trade) Tue Feb 20 1990 13:46

I quite often hear songs on the radio that are not announced. Lots
of stations in this part of the world broadcast long strings of
music with no DJ in evidence.

So, I'm starting this topic to put people like me out of their
misery by drawing on the combined knowledge of noters to identify
those tracks that we'd like to hear again. This is not the same as
the "first liners" topic; it's intended to request information
rather than test knowledge for fun.

If you can supply the name of the singer or group and the title of
the track, please reply. If you can also add the title of the
album and the approximate year of its release, that would be a
	bonus.

For starters, here's one I heard on the radio yesterday:

Female singer - most memorable words (possible track title):
		         "Marlene on the Wall".

	Who knows what it was?

	Thanks,

	Delia (in Valbonne)

Delia, believe it or not, the song you heard was called 'Marlene
on the Wall', and is by Suzanne Vega.

FYI - Marlene On The Wall is off of Suzanne Vega's first album
simply titled Suzanne Vega. She also has a second album out called
Solitude Standing. Both albums IMO are very good and worth the purchase.

Thank you both for the info.

"Solitude Standing" is in our CD library here at DEC Valbonne, so
I'll have a listen to it at the first opportunity.

Just think, if I hadn't thought of Notes, I might have stayed
	ignorant for ever....

Here's another one that bugs me because I can never remember the
title or the singer but I know the tune . The bit from the chorus
    goes like ....

"and you can thank your lucky stars that we're not as smart as we'd
like to think we are "

It was a hit around 1978 by an American guy I think . Again I think
his first name was Dean . Why I remember this song is that although
a female can be heard singing throughout this track she was never
mentioned while the track was charting . So name that tune ....

    ...........'cause I sure as hell can't .

Well, if you find that irritating, don't, whatever you do, listen to the De la

snatches/scratches of Steely Dan songs battling it out in your head.

In this case, the original version was sung by a german group whose name
I can't remember for the moment.
But as the lyrics are quite easy to sing without aceent, this song has been
covered by an english band, with perhaps even more success.

    RE-1,

I agree, but the simplicity of it is what makes it good. It's not
overcrowded, it's just straightforward backing music. It's the songs
that stands out. The b-side contains the a cappella version. Roll on
the weekend and there'll be a "matty's monstrosity mix" on the remix
    12".

ahhh...I didn't realise the DNA thing had been released. I was just
reading about it in the import section a few weeks ago. is it really
boring? I quite like the original because of its simple presentation
and the inflexions in her voice, but then I've always had problems.

Re: most of the music remixes/re-releases around today..

You can't just add a backing beat, and a few oh yeah's (wish I had
copy-right on that !!) and the song will be good. It seems that these
people find an old (or not so old) song that sold well, and add some
stuff, release it and reap in the cash. But some people buy that stuff!

I think the Ben Liebrand mix of the Sting record is dreadful, but I'm
glad that such a classic song has made the chart, as it should have
done on first release. I don't really like Ben Liebrand, but some do
    (Jan for instance).

Andy, I really like the DNA record. It's not just taking any old
record and putting a beat to it that makes it a hit. You have to know
what will go down well. Suzanne likes the record, so do her record
company, and so do the people who have made it No2.

I think an artist loses Brownie points for doing a cover version, but
how many of you like the Soup Dragons record? I personally have to do
a version of Tommy Roe's `Dizzy'. It's so tailor made for the current
climate, it's a great song and he can have half the royalties!

Re .24 I heard it last night, that's why I wrote.

Re .25 Ok, so Suzanne Vega likes it. without being too bitchy, most
people wouldn't mind a bit more cash coming in. It will also give her
some attention, and people may buy her records because of it.

Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but I wish people would leave the classic
(and the not so classic) songs alone, and let people remember them as
they are. Or, alternatively, do an imaginitive cover version of the
    song.

    	My own thoughts - Andy.

I was hanging in Belgium the other day, waiting for the Hole/Nirvana
show to start, and I heard a record that sounded kind of interesting.

It had mainly male vocals (although a track that seemed to be by the
same band had female vocals) and I thought it sounded rather Swans-ish
(except that the female's voice seemed wrong). I almost recognized
one of the songs which referred to a "red-headed" or "red-haired"
woman or girl. The reference to the girl with red hair was repeated
over and over in the song.

What is Kiki Dee upt these days. Had she ever released anything
on her own? Or was she a member of a band? Have not heard of her
over here, U.S., since her duet with Elton John in '74.

Well she was around for years before the Elton John duet. She had a
couple of top twenty hits (Yes, it was called the Top Twenty then,
maybe even the Hit Parade!) but I can't remember what they were.

Can someone tell me the film that the "Lick the Tins" version of "I can't help
falling in love..." was the theme for ?

Thanks,

Well, it was used in the BBC play of 'The Snapper'. That's now been
released as a film, so Barry Norman tells me.

Also, there's a bit about the record in the Q&A of Q magazine this
    month.

    Any other films?

Re .63, Thanks, Paul - but I'm not convinced! Now I've got 2 vague songs
running around my increasingly-empty head - and it's possible they're the same
one!

I heard a cover version of Andy Williams' "Its too good to be true",
this morning by a lead singer of a famous band that is supposedly
going to get to number 1.

Unfortunately, I must of dozed off when they said who the singer was.
Actually I think his voice is quite weak and doesn't compare to the
    original.

    Does anyone know?

    Cheers

Is it actually "Can't Take My Eyes off You", or is that yet another Andy
Williams 'classic'?

Well, I'm not ashamed to admit knowing the whole first verse off by
heart! Amazing how I can remember passing pop songs from my youth but
    not Pythagoras' Theorem!

Can't Take My Eyes Off You

You're just to good to be true,
Can't take my eyes off you
You feel like heaven to touch
I wanna hold you so much
And if you feel like I feel
Please let me know love is real
You're just to good to be true
Can't take my eyes off you.

Of course, 50% was included in the Pet Shop Boys release 'Streets
With No Name/Can't Get Used to Losing You".

Andy Williams had some great songs written for him (such as this). One
of my favourites was 'Home Lovin' Man', a Greenaway/Cook (ie British)
composition if my memory serves me well.
