Generally, I don't like cover versions. However, I was playing
the "Fine Young Cannibals" CD last night, and I cannot fail to
be impressed with their version of "Suspicious Minds" - great!

Re .8 and Going Home. Mark Knopfler (approximate) quotes...

'When I was a kid, all I wanted was to play a red and white
    Fender Stratocaster like Hank Marvin'

'I think Hank's rendition of Going Home is the best I've heard'.

I also saw Dire Straits on TV recently where Mark bought Hank Marvin
on for the finale which was Going Home. Unfortunately they still
stuck to the lead sax arrangement with Hank playing rythm. However,
enough evidence here to show Mark Knopfler wouldn't disagree strongly
    with my view.

Re -.? Santana and Black Magic Woman is a truly brilliant cover
which I was teetering on putting in my previous reply.

I also heard (suprisingly) fresh treatment of 10cc's I'm Not In
Love on the radio. Sort of disco style. I think it sounded great.
    Anyone who it was?

probably black, and very much in a disco style.

If you are like me, and are sort of obsessed with obscure cover
versions, then it's a little of both. All of the covers I m entioned
are very good, in spite of the obscurity of some of them and none
of them are hard to find, (i.e. a Beatles bootleg from Hamburg,
    1961).

Dredging up obscure covers is a wonderful pastime.

    Some more (unusual) covers:

Surfin' U.S.A. by the Jesus and Mary Chain. This one is quite
    	known, but still brilliant.

Foxy Lady by The Cure. The old Jimi Hendrix song.

In the Ghetto covered by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, but I'm
not sure who originally did it (any idea anyone).

And if anybody can give me any pointers as to where I can obtain
a copy of Oscar Wilde covering I don't wan't to set the world on
fire, it would be greatly appreciated.

French, Frith, Kaiser and Thompson also do a *killer* version of
"Surfin' U.S.A". R. Thompson does some wonderful grunge-guitar
stuff, and the backing vocals are done to sound as if they are being
sung by Russian Cossacks or somethin' GREAT song on a GREAT album!

    Re .22, .23

Certainly Elvis had a monster hit with 'In the Ghetto' back in 69/70
    ish. However....

I have an old LP by Family Dogg who had a one off hit with 'Its
a Way of Life'. On the LP is 'In the Ghetto'. I've never figured
out who released it first because the only date on the LP is the
same year as Elvis' realease. I suspect Elvis was the original but
it could just be his was a cover.

Above LP also had Led Zeppelin (well John Bonham, Jimmy Page and
another member whose name escapes me) as session musicians. Actually
this must mean the LP pre-dates Led Zeppelin as a group which may
    provide a clue.

    well here's some more

In my collection of odd records is one called Reggaebility by the
Cimarons. As you might guess, it's reggae-style. But the tracks on it
are *all* covers, of things like Love Me Do, C'Moon, Mull of Kintyre,
That'll be the Day, Big Girls Don't Cry. Etc. Some of them work, most
of them don't. But it was an interesting idea.

Another LP with loadsacovers is Faithful by Todd Rundgren. One side of
this LP is note-for-note perfect covers of Todd's faves of the sixties
    - such tracks as Good Vibrations, Rain, Strawberry Fields, If Six was
Nine, etc. This is a mid-seventies LP, before the days of sampling,
Fairlights, etc, so he must have gone to a lot of trouble to get them
sounding as close as he did. Why? Your guess is as good as mine.

    now to *serious* cover versions

Otway and Barrett did a truly marvellous version of "Ghost Riders
in the Sky"/"Running from the Law" on their "Deep and Meaningless"
LP. Come back Otway and Barrett, the world needs you.

Robert Palmer had a minor hit with a tune called "(You are in my)
System", which was a very close cover of an original by a U.S. band
called The System. Robert also had a turntable hit with a Todd Rundgren
tune called Can we Still be Friends.

And finally, one gets my nomination for worst cover in a long time: the
Goth version of "Like A Hurricane" which is around at the moment. I've
nothing against Gothdom in general, but *this* is just not nice.

The Best cover version for me has to be:-

'I am a rock' by The Church (From the Sing Songs EP).

its great for two reasons, firstly its got even more 'feel' and
atmosphere than the original, and secondly its the only cover they
have ever done thereby making it very special to those of us who
hold The Church dear to our hearts.

I heard another version of 'All along The Watchtower' last night

to be expected a bit loud...sorta cross between The Doors and U2.
