229.0. "KING CRIMSON" by MALLET::JEFFERY (Give me the keys to your Ferrari) Thu Oct 06 1988 11:53

Hi, I've just been re-listening to an album that has been collecting
dust for the past 5 years or so. I'm referring to

King Crimson, Lark's tongues in Aspic.

Are there any other big King Crimson fans out there ?

I couldn't believe the power and good sound coming from this record.

    I also have

"In the court of the Crimson King"
    and
"A young persons' guide to King Crimson"

Can anyone tell me what the other albums are like? Especially
    "Red"
    "Three of a perfect pair"
    and
    "Lizard"

    Cheers.

    Mark.

I was never into the early Crimson, but I have "Discipline", "Beat"
and "Three of a Perfect Pair". These three albums are so alike they
could have been released as a triple album! They contain some excellent
stuff, though, and are certainly one of the prides of my record
collection. The sound is very modern and well produced (though still
very obscure a la Fripp). Amazing guitar sounds and Tony Levin on
the Chapman stick. Bill Brufords distinctive drumming. Very powerful
and searching lyrics. Probably the most original sound I've heard
    in the 80's.

I would recommend these three albums to any Crimson/Progressive/Modern
    Jazz Fringe fan.

229.2It's number 1 it's Top of the PopsMALLET::BARKERPretty Damn CosmicThu Oct 06 1988 12:329
One of my most abiding memories is of viewing King Crimson on Top of
the Pops in 196? doing 'Catfood' from 'In the Wake of Poseiden'. I guess TOTP
was trying to be hip.

I would second all that Mark says, personally I preferred the earlier
KC to the later jazzy stuff but it is all damn good especially Robert Fripp's
stupendous guitar work.

229.3What a crafty guitarist!RDGENG::MOXLEYWassappenin?Thu Oct 06 1988 13:0729
Ah yes!, King Crimson, watta band!

My earliest memories are of listening to 21st C Schizoid Man on the
headphones at our local record store on lunch breaks from school. This is
now available on CD and (personal opinion only, NO flames), makes all your
HM bands sound like Barry Manilow, play it LOUD!

I have Larks Tongues, also Lizard (original Island label, not the re-issued
Polydor), Young Persons Guide, and Discipline and 3 Of A Perfect Pair.
I have heard all the albums however, and USA is very good too, a live album
with all the spontaneity, 'Asbury Park Lament' is a good track from that
album.
I like the earlier and later band(s), a particular fave track has to be
'Indiscipline' , Adrian Belew's vocals are a real stunner, he should have
joined the band a long time ago!

Also of interest is the booklet which comes with 'Young Persons Guide',
very informative, Fripp in nearly all the photos, is sitting on the guitar
stool, strumming away, and from reports of friends who've seen the band
live, he does this on stage too.

KC were on TV (TVS) about a year ago, unfortunately the vid wasn't handy,
anyone else see that concert?, what a blast!, all the stuff from
'Discipline' and 'The Beat' (probably my least fave album).

			Confirmed KC fan,

A Austrian friend of mine asked me to buy "In the court of the crimson
king" for him when I was in England, so I did, then I played it
    then I kept it!
Didn't really like their later stuff as much but I've not heard
most of those you guys classed as later albums, so maybe I missed
something which d'ya fink is this best.

229.5Crimso lps I know and loveWELMTS::GREENBThree in a row, she's got to goThu Oct 06 1988 17:3339
The Court of the Crimson King - way ahead of anything else at the
time, a mesmerising combination of 'cosmic' and 'manic', great stuff.

In the Wake of Poseidon - if you like the first lp you'd like this
as well, its similar but not as good, probably my least favourite
    Crimso lp

Lizard - certainly broke new ground, with a largely augmented group
(large amounts of brass and reeds, plus Keih Tippets *very* strange
piano playing) definitely not easy listening, even by Crimso standards,
    very modern jazzy sound.

Earthbound - live lp, recorded on a cassette player, hence the cheap
price tag. Very raw, an unbelievably heavy 'Schizoid Man', a couple
of jams, and 'Groon", containing a long heavy drum/synth break.

Islands - not very familiar with this one - less produced, sparser
instrumentation than Lizard, contains a totally different 'Sailors
    tale' to Earthbound.

Three lps that go together for me - Larks Tongues in Aspic, Starless
and Bible Black, and Red. All 3 very good, with probably the stablest
line up, the Bruford/Wetton/Fripp axis evident on all records. This
line up just got heavier and heavier, but still displayed incredible
    musicianship and range of styles.

USA - Ive only heard this one once or twice, any good?

I'm none too familiar with the later stuff either, except for Three
of a Perfect Pair, which I like a lot - it has some of the sound
and feel of Brian Eno round about Before and After Science in parts.

I've seen them live a few times, once with the mighty Jamie Muir
on percussion as well as Bill Bruford - a memorable gig.

Anyone care to have a go at listing all the different Crimso line-ups?
    8^) 8^)

    Robert Fripp/Mel Collins/Gordon Haskell/Ian McCullough

    released lp : Lizard

Haskell left for solo work, McCullough joined Arthur Browns KingdomCome
for a short while then went on to join Greenslade

    Nov 70 - Apr 72 KING CRIMSON #4

                   Earthbound

Boz Burrell joined as singer, but Fripp taught him how to play bass.
During the Earthbound tour the entire band resigned but were persuaded
to finish the US tour. On their return, Collins joined Kokomo, Burrell
did sessions then Bad Company and Wallace eventually joined
    Streetwalkers.

    July 72 - Sept 74 KING CRIMSON #5
    Robert Fripp/John Wetton/Bill Bruford/Jamie Muir/David Cross

released lps: Larks Tongues in Aspic

                  Red
Young Persons Guide to King Crimson (compilation)

Cross and Muir left to disapear without trace. John Wetton joined
Roxy Music, then Bryan Ferry Band, UK, Asia and the rest. Bill Bruford
joined UK and did solo work. When this band broke up, Fripp said
this was the last ever KC line-up, and Crimson was dead. His proposed
solo album, "Last of the New York heart-throbs" didn't materialise
    but another KC did.

    Thats my lot.

Brilliant and concise, Ken!! I knew much of that, but the parts
on "what they did after Crimso" were great, that threw up a whole
load of good bands. Mel Collins also did a stint with a pub rock
kind of band called Dick and the Firemen (!) about 1974 - this
comprised a combination of members of Patto, Kokomo, and other Ladbroke
Grove r'n'b merchants, and they had at least two of everything!
Previous to KC, Mel was a member of Circus.

Apparently, King Crimsons first gig was supporting the Stones at
    Hyde Park in 1969.

    Now the big question is......
Does anyone have the Giles, Giles, and Fripp record?

    Ah the memories ....

In my (humble humble) opinion, "Red" is perhaps the most underrated
KC album (by the way, is it out on CD ??).

Another little factlet - when the 'new' King Crimson first toured,
they appeared under the name of 'Discipline' (I know, I saw them at
    Manchester Polytechnic :-) ).

    Cheers,

    Derek.

I forgot to mention Pete Sinfield in the Crimson line-ups. Although
not a touring musician, he wrote the lyrics of the early stuff and
used to operate the light show. The last I heard of him, he had
written the English lyrics for the Italian band PFM.

Talking of Crimson trivia, when Pete Banks left YES, they contacted
Fripp as a possible replacement. Also, ELP was hatched on a US tour
    when Crimson supported The Nice.

    cheers,
    Ken

I rate red *very* highly as well.....and it is out on CD
Apparently, the CD version is "not as wonderful as it might be"
but not having a CD player I cant verify that.

re Discipline - wasnt that the name of the band *and* an lp before
Fripp decided to reactivate the name King Crimson?

Fripp has also played with quite a few other people, most notably
Bowie, but has also guested live with Peter Gabriel (under the
pseudonym of Dusty Roads), and recorded with Eno (a couple of
Frippertronics lps jointly credited to Fripp and Eno, and has appeared
on several Brian Eno "solo" lps). He also appears as guest guitarist
on A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers, which takes up one whole side
of Pawn Hearts, by Van Der Graaf Generator - this band are not for
    the faint hearted!!!

Does anyone know of any other Fripp extra-Crimso activities?

I have the first Giles, Giles and Fripp album as a Japanese Import.
It is rather 'quaint' mid-sixties stuff, quite unlike Crimson. As
might be expected the guitar playing is very good!

I am a big Robert Fripp fan, and have seen King Crimson three times
in their 80s line up. They usually play material from the last three
albums, but also cover the tracks Larks Tongues in Aspic part2,
    and Red.

I would recommend Robert Fripp's first solo Album (called Exposure?
about 1979). This was produced as part of triple album sequence
with Peter Gabriel's 2nd or 3rd Album and Darryl Hall's solo album
'Sacred Songs'. There should have been co-incidental release of
these three Albums, all produced by Fripp. Darryl Hall's record
company at first refused to issue his album because it was
uncommercial. Fripp's Album was recorded around the time he was
hanging around with Blondie. He guests on the track Fade away and
    Radiate.

Also guesting on Exposure are Peter Gabriel and Peter Hammill.
    Definitely worth getting hold of.

Anybody heard any of his latest stuff with Mrs Fripp (Toyah Wilcox).

This is great! i Knew there had to be Fripp, Crimson fans out there.
I discovered Crimson via the Lizard album which a disk jockey gave
me 'cause it was so horrible'. I was 13 or so at the time and had
grew up on the beatles and beach boys. I though this band was playing
a joke (and who the heck is that singer that cant sing!). Well,
now i have all their CD's and...

I couldn't understand why 'Starless and bible black' (the song)
was on Red, It would have been great on the album 'Starless and
    bible black'.

I know Fripp has been involved ( i think he is now the head of)
a 4th way school (Not to be confused with 4GL) in west virginia.
I believe he was teaching guitar to people who normally couldnt
play so he made up new tunings ( i believe he uses some of them
on Discipine beat ect). He also did an album using the students,
i believe its called 'the league of crafty guitarists, a joke on
his earlier 'league of gentlemen album.

I think if i had to recommend one crimson album, it would be Starless
and bible black. There are some problems with the Island CD, there
is noise on the master tapes i believe.

Fripp was talking about a year ago about reforming the band (All
the previous bass players went on to make big bucks), but i havent
    heard anything...

The USA album as some interesting things on it. I think when Crimson
was on tour and they improvised in any city, they named the track
after the town. Asbury Park on USA is an example of this. If you
are a Crimzoid, you should have this album. The playing on it sounds
tired compared to earlier bootlegs of Crimson tours, but the version
of Easy Money on USA has different words and fades out, no reprise
after the extended Jam like on the Larkes Tongue album.

Easy Money came out after 'Money' by Pink Floyd, i wonder if they
stole ideas here for the sound of the song?

Crimso's finest hour??? Easy Money. (Closely followed by
       Starless & BB, off Red).

I have In the Court..., and all from Lark' Tongues onwards but
am missing Three of a Perfect Pair. How does it rate? Is the early
stuff in the shops at all? CD or LP?

My only Crimson concert was Liverpool Empire circa 1974.
Astonishingly good but attendance not so good (Some people can't
tell class if it hits them).

Am gradually educating my wife in the merits of KC. Like many
people, I imagine, she needs some time to realise just how good
      it all is.

Apparently a Robert + Mrs Fripp tour is mooted (underway?).
It must be at least half interesting.

Notes on his other projects v. interesting - didn't realise the
      amount of work generated.

Let's keep this conf. going.. It's good to find others of similar
      fine taste.

that Starless should have been on Starless and Bible Black. Can
you make out all the words to Starless? I cant make out the words
on the 'Ice blue silver sky/fades into grey/to a grey hope ****/
    can you make it out.
Lizard was a unique album, i think keith tippet who i understand
is a 'real' jazz player, adds alot to the album. Sinfield called
the shots on that album. I like the part on side II of Lizard where
the two armys meet and there is the build up. I think the first
song on side II of lizard was a minor hit. Happy family was about
    the beatles.

fallen angel off red was one of my favorites. I cant make out the

its best i dont know them!

The track you're thinking of is "Elephant Talk" from the "Disipline"
album, released about '81 if I remember rightly. This was the first
of 3 albums recorded by the same line up (Fripp, Bruford, Tony Levin
& Adrian Belew)- amazing, since all previous efforts during their

Fallen Angel, One More Red Nightmare.....ahhh, classics all!
Not to mention Nightwatch, with one of Fripps most moving solos

    re . 23 - Toyah Wilcox.

She is an ex-punk (appeared in Derek Jarman's film "Jubilee")
and sometime musician and actress. Her band, also called Toyah
had one or two quite big hits in the UK round about 1980, when a
lot of "post-punk" (hate that phrase!) bands seemed to be getting
into the charts - groups like the Undertones, Jam, Costello, Squeeze
    etc.
The two Toyah hits I can remember are "It's a mystery" and "I wanna
be free" - lp's include "Sheep Farming in Barnet". Not exactly punk,
but that kind of gauche late 70's stuff, with cranked up guitars,
lots of keyboards and assertive vocals - her music is quite
distinctive, she was even flavour of the month once.
I can't quite see where the interface between Toyah's and Robert's
music is - if it works it should be quite interesting, though....

Toyah Wilcox has a new album out called 'Prostitute' that I read a

comes from and still lives I believe.

In _MY_ opinion, 3 of a perfect pair is a bit commercial. I like
the title cut. I know fripp hated the way bruford was playing drums
or EXCUSE ME, percussion on the album. Of their 3 new albums, i
    would rate it last.

I don't know whats in the shops over there ( i would like to have
a look though!), here, all the CD's are in the shops, so you shouldn't
have trouble finding them at the big record shops like Virgin records
since they are all imported from over there. One problem is that
the Islands CD has garbage on the master tape on the first cut.
From what i see in the notes filehere, mr. Fripp must be done with
his stint in the '4th way' school in the US.

Its great being able to talk to other Crimson fans for a change.

band because so much had been expected from KC.

My favourite songs are "I talk to the Wind","In the Wake of
Poseidon","Starless and Bible Black (from "Red") and "Frame by Frame".

The Top of the pops performance in 1970 was at a time when the
producers were aware of the impact of the the progressive bands
which is why bands like "Bloodwyn Pig" also appeard on the show.

I always felt that the Boz Burrell line up was a mistake in that
the chemistry appeared to be miles away from that of the first line
    up.........

i believe also, that Fripp had to teach Boz how to play bass. I
think he said that in the notes to 'Young peoples guide to..".
Of course Ol' Boz went off with Bad Company and made $$$$$$.

Regarding the confusion about STARLESS ......

The song called STARLESS in on the Red album (12:18), and there
is also the song STARLESS AND BIBLE BLACK on the album of the
    same name (9:14) ........

Adrian Belew has done 2 solo efforts while with KC, and also now
has performed/produced 2 albums for the band - The Bears .......

I love Belew's stuff, and The Bears are a good, solid bar band, classy
rock 'n roll with graet harmonizing .....

I stood leaning against the stage for 2 consecutive shows from the
Discipline tour at Perkins Palace in Pasadena, California back in
1980, it was awesome ! Fripp barely moves, perched on his stool,
and Bruford is ALWAYS amazing !

My faves are Starless and Bible Black, Lark's Tongue, and the last
    3 releases ..........

NOTE: It's rumored that Tony Levin will be joining the reformed
          Yes, with Anderson/Bruford/Wakeman/Howe !

I don't like those early albums which were half under the control of Pete
Sinfield, so much, including "The Court of Crimson King", 'cos they are so
dull, lazy and toooo much sentimental! Why don't you put them deep inside your

etc?! Can you return to dismal "In the wake of Poseidon" after you've
experienced "The Larks Tongue In Aspic Part II" of "USA"(Note "USA" live

I can't recall the entire listing, but it does include 'Groon' which
was, I believe, the 'B'-side of Cat Food.

Also included is a previously unreleased version of 'I Talk To The
Wind' with a female vocalist (name something like Judy Dybol?), recorded
    on a fairly primitive machine.

Plus 'Starless and Bible Black', 'In The Court Of The Crimson King',
'Moonchild' (without the long, meandering piece after the vocals), 'The
Night Watch' and a Mellotron/Fripp guitar instrumental ('Starless'?).

This is all based on memory - can someone give marks out of ten?!

Talking of -1 is right. It includes "Groon", different version of "I
    Talk to The Wind".
Songs were selected by Fripp. The CD is widely sold in Japan but I've

The songs are mainly chosen from the early days except "Red", "Lark's

However, I did find another offering called 'The Compact King Crimson'
which contains most of the 'In The Court Of The Crimson King' album
(except 'Moonchild'), nothing from 'Poseidon', 'Lizard' or 'Islands' and
then a selection from the later albums. I guess this is intended to
fulfil the same purpose as 'Young Person's Guide'.

King Crimson was one of the best bands of the 70's, vastly overlooked

favorite among "progressive" music fans. Did they fare better
    elsewhere, as in the U.K.?

229.49More Crimson Info/TriviaBASCAS::CURRIE_IFri Sep 27 1991 12:4928
    Re .46/.47

    .47 is correct.

Groon was only ever a single, as far as I know.

The Dream & The Illusion are parts of Moonchild (In The Court Of The
Crimson King), but like so many of those early tracks that had
subsections, I defy you to tell me where one part ends and the next
begins. (Thinks: if they are properly segmented as separate tracks on
the CD, you could tell. Are they?)

One obscure piece of information. After they left King Crimson, Ian
McDonald and Mike Giles made an LP called (wait for it...) McDonald and
Giles. It also features Peter Giles, and a guest appearance from
Stevie Winwood (playing organ). One of the tracks from that LP (I
can't remember the name - it'll come to me as soon as I have entered
this Note!) - claims to be the original melody for Cadence and Cascade.
I'll check the LP when I get home tonight.

I was/am extremely fond of the early Crimson stuff. They virtually
invented a new genre of music which came to be called 'pomp rock' and
included Yes, ELP, Genesis, Pink Floyd...etc, and tended to be
characterised by virtuoso musicianship as well as grandiose/pseudo
classical melodies and instrumentation. I think it's a great shame
that this style of music has gone out of fashion.

highlight chart topping albums that had basically failed to stand the

Last month(maybe), Prof. Fripp held a gig with David Sylvian in Japan. Of
course, David is from notorious JAPAN. Funny thing was, I read in a Japanese
keyboard magazine, the audience was completely separated, one group was girls
wanting to see David performing, and the another was boys, guys wanting to see
Prof. Fripp's guitar work.

Hmm, interesting. But what's that matter?

What stunningly amazed me was David's answer to an interviewer. Here's the
humble translation.

I: "David, we know you were invited to next honorable vocalist of Crimson."

D: "Not really. Yes, I admit there was a rumour. But I don't think I jibe with
    Crimson."
(Absolutely.)

You see?! Prof. Fripp is plotting VI (V or VII?) King Crimson! Yeah, it's
pretty good time to see their(who? besides Prof. Fripp?) re-debut! Since
Prof. Fripp tend to form pre-Crimson band just before real Crimson(remember
last Crimson was named Dicipline before the album was released), I guess next
will come from SAOTW. Then, ooh, dream goes on!, King Crimsom will have the
first female vocalist!(Sure! I know 'I Talk to the Wind' was once recorded
with female vocalist. But it's rare item.)

The another story.

The other day, I went to N.Y to see the gig of 'League of craft guitarist'.
You know, Prof. Fripp is real professor in his guitar school in Virginia(how I
wanted to be a student!). Prof. Fripp appeared in request to short interview.
I can say he's not so tall, extremely polite, calm gentleman, with a bit high
voice.
