187.0. "Rolling trivia quiz!" by RDGENG::KEDMUNDS (But I haven't got an fm2r...) Tue Aug 30 1988 17:31

Like the "1st liners" note. Enter a trivia question; first correct
answerer (?) gets to pose the next question.

PLEASE! Nothing too obscure - let's keep this as realistic fun,
not "look how much I know about the Kingpin Wheelclamp Band".

what is the only song by The Beatles,in which no Beatle plays on?

guess at .8 ?? Saraha Lee played bass for both bands?

187.12Fill that rathole !!WARDER::KAYDIf music be the love of food .....Tue Aug 30 1988 21:5716
Just to tidy up -

The answer to .8 is Robert Fripp, who played guitar for the
League of Gentlemen and produced the Roaches first album (as well as
playing an all-time classic guitar solo on 'Hammond Song').

There now, that should get us back in order (I'm not going to enter
a new one, so the confusion should end now :-) :-)

Cheers,

Derek

187.33An answer42086::GREENBFri Sep 09 1988 16:174

one Macca has done, but Robert Wyatt has recorded Shipbuilding.

187.34Yup again45610::FIDDLERMFri Sep 09 1988 17:056
Not having much luck with you today Bob, are you a Declan fan?
anyway, youre correct. Elvis cowrote a song called back on my feet
which was on the B side of Once upon a long ago by Macca. Can't
remember who wrote the music to Shipbuilding - was it Ben Watt?

    Mike
187.35Next question.....42086::GREENBFri Sep 09 1988 18:1210
Mike - I am indeed a Dec Mac fan.
Shipbuilding is in fact a Costello co-composition with either Langer
or Winstanley, his producers at one time

OK then, here's the next teaser for y'all....

Whilst on the subject of famous offspring in the muso world, isn't
it funny that none of the people listed are any good? Why they
think they can get away with it just because their father/mother
did I don't know. All of the people listed were outstanding in
their particular music fields., acts that you wouldn't DARE follow.
Obviously musical talent isn't heriditary. Worst offender in this
category must be the atrocious offspring of the great Nat Kings
Loins, Natalie Cole. How on earth did she expect to follow an act
    as good as him?!

a guitarist from Go West fairly recently. The guy's name slips
my mind for the moment, but I do recall reading something about

Related question - this guitarist has quite a unique sound to his
playing. Can any of you clever noters tell me if it is he who plays
the excellent solo on Nick Heyward's "Warning Sign" (sadly a non-hit

Now, not a lot of people know this, but Bowie recorded it for inclusion
on one of his own albums, ditching it at the last minute in favour

obcsure??? All of the bands listed (ahem, with the exception of LOVE
AND MONEY) have had TOP 40 hits in the last year. Admittedly not
many people would know the lead singers' names, but at least someone
got it in the end, and a one or two were pretty close.

Or as someone suggested, would you rather it went along the lines
of "Who had hits in 1987 with 'Never Gonna Give You Up' and ....."???
Somehow I think it'd quickly die a death.

OK Michael - it's all yours!!!!!

Graham Nash. Incidentally I believe that Joni was romantically involved with
every member if CSN & Y at one time or another. That would actually make a
rather good if longish trivia question - a list of Joni's former beaus.

There is a connection between Bob Dylan & the Beach Boys what is it ?

To ensure that this isn't too obscure for our Moderator I should
explain that the Beach Boys were a popular American vocal/instrumental
ensemble, Mr Dylan is a solo performer & songwriter.

Correct. Give the boy a coconut. I don't think that I could have been much
heavier in my hinting.

Before his mega C&W stardom Glen Campbell was a much respected session
guitarist and having seen him once or twice on the TV I would confirm that he
is a damn fine axe-man.

He played guitar on Blonde on Blonde as did Robbie Robertson of the Band
(credited as Jaime Robbie Robertson for some reason).

When Brian Wilson freaked out early on and decided not to tour then Glen
Campbell actually went on tour as a Beach Boy. Brian stayed at home and
produced 'Pet Sounds' singlehanded.

Anyway take it away Herr Spurtle.

Not the Blitz. Here's a whopping clue: the first *eight* lines:

their starlight shone bright in the balckout
like the beams of the usherettes
but when the big bear bit deep after Yalta
there were those who came to forget
they went out west for the screening
and they carried a sharp-tooth comb

they were making the fur fly at home

OK this is obviously too obscure. Still I would have thought there'd
be at least one other person who likes Latin Quarter. Any road up,
I'm awarding the crate of logical champagne to Richard Bell (187.334)
'cos he was at least warm. Take it away Richard.

BTW The full lyrics are:

their starlight shone bright in the blackout
like the beams of the usherettes
but when the big bear bit deep after Yalta
there were those who came to forget
they went out west for the screening
and they carried a sharp-tooth comb
in search of the double meaning
they were making the fur fly at home

so get up! go on! grip that stand!
and press your hand to your heart
big Mac is asking the questions
and this is only the start

now Mac came on hot and noisy
in his search for old Uncle Joe
as he tracked him down to Tinsel Town
for Boise, Idaho
and the folks that queued up for Coogan
now queued up for the end of a myth
to sit open-mouthed at the newsreel
the night that Chaplin took the fifth

and the offers packed up for so many
dropped like a Wurlitzer into the pit
and what we got for the pain was more John Wayne
and anything else that they saw fit
because when they needed to break resistance
and they could not go on using a fist
they took the camera into the courthouse
they circulated a list

AND at the very beginning of the track as the music is starting, there
are two bits of soundtrack from a newsreel which goes...

A.	There will be no demonstrations. No demonstrations.
Do you solemnly swear that the testimony your about to give is
the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help
	you God.
B.	I do.
A.	Sit down.

Just on the off chance that the shortest possible time is
one week, one springs to mind which was 'The Power of Love'
by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. It was billed as 'their nth number
one single' as it was released. Furtunately for them it made it
before being pushed off by 'Do they know it's Christmas' by
BandAid the week after.

Still, there must have been hundreds of number ones lasting only
one week, so it's a trick question. Would it by any chance be the
number one that arrived on the Tuesday only to be replaced on the
following Sunday when they changed the charts day to Sunday?? I
haven't a clue what it was tho'.

What's the name of this 60's english group that never gained worldwide

1) Release "My Degeneration" as an answer to the Who's "My generation",
2) During a gig in a church they made a cover of the Stones' "Satisfaction"

3) Their last one : release "Penny lane" the day after the Beatles did it !

only released singles in the 60's but 2 LPs have been released in the last 3
years with all their songs + alternate takes + radio jingles + unreleased

I hope you will forgive me for the previous quizz, here is an easiest one :
What is the name of this well known UK 60 band (with many top ten singles)
that Jeff Lyne joined in the late 60's to turn it into a pre-ELO ?

No, no, and thrice no, especially XTC.

Fleetwood Mac are not cr*p, at least not when Peter Green (no relation)
    was with 'em.

    XTC have never been cr*p.

KLF are OK too, but not being not cr*p is not the connection.

A clue; it's to do with various recordings made by each band at
    different times.

Another clue, as I can't think of any other bands at the moment; REM
and the Sex Pistols could be added to the list, but in a live, on-stage
    situation rather than by recordings.

Fleetwood Mac recorded a B-side (Someone's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked

XTC have recorded two albums as The Dukes of Stratosphear.

Hmmmm. Interesting. I recall hearing the tune in the late sixties
on college radio (the version with the words) before the original Mash
movie came out. This is not an argument just an observation. You are
correct with your entry anyway if for no other reason but the fact that
the M*A*S*H theme is used as an instrumental. There are probably a lot
of people that don't even know there are words to the tune. (or not)

Duran Duran were/are from Birmingham, Solihull to be exact. I think Spandau
    Ballet are Londoners.
