1009.0. "Freddie Tribute?" by ODDONE::HOLLANDS_C () Wed Apr 22 1992 18:17

    So what did everyone think of the Freddie Mercury tribute?

    A celebration of Freddie's life?

    Or just another excuse for the same old artists to plug their latest
    hit? (Extreme excepted, of course)

1009.1Are we talking about the same concert?WARHED::GILLILANDWed Apr 22 1992 18:255
    Can you tell me which artists plugged their latest hit ? Most of them
    sang Queen songs, which could be construed as `celebrating Freddies
    life'.

    Disappointing as far as the television coverage goes, but that could
    be due to someone banging nails into the wall next door.

    Freinds of mine that went said that it was brilliant (except for
    Metallica) live.   I'll never know....
1009.3where did Annie bought her dress...?UTROP1::BORRIAS_IWed Apr 22 1992 18:3519
    I thought it was great, especially Extreme and ofcourse Elton John's
    hair"do".....

    I agree with the writer before me, I can't think of an artist
    or group who plugged their latest song in this concert.
    I believe they did it to honour Freddie.... and why not, he was great!

    I didn't like the bit when Elizabeth Taylor was on, I first thought
    she was going to introduce Madonna or maybe Michael Jackson, but
    unfortunately (not for everyone) they weren't there.

    Lisa Stansfield did a good one with the vacuum cleaner!!

    What do the other noters think of it all ?

    Cheers,
    Ilse*

    I suppose one shouldn't knock this sort of thing, i guess it was all
    meant sincerely, although one does wonder why Freddy Mercury did
    nothing to support the AIDS cause while he was alive. I doubt if many
    of the people attending/watching cared much about the reason behind the
    concert anyway.

    As for the Music - I didn't see it coz I always hated Queen anyway,
    although I was cheesed off to hear that I missed U2 doing one of thier
    own songs.

1009.6Def Leppard definately miss that extra guitarCURRNT::PAYNE_ADiscount Pants'n'HaircutsWed Apr 22 1992 19:526
    re .1 , .3

    Def Leppard seemed to be playing all their tunes including their
    current fab'n'groovy offering. Didn't watch it after that.

    You didn't miss much with U2. A Bad sound link made them sound all
    muffled, and they cut to them half way through a live show. Bono
    didn't acknowledge the fact that they were broadcasting to half the
    English speaking world, and the song wasn't all that hot. Video
    screens looked good though.

    Def Leppard & U2 sprang to mind as "pluggers"
    I thought Guns 'n Roses were fairly average too - Still, at least I can
    sleep nights knowing that David Bowie is praying for me...

    Watched it all. Performing someone else's songs must be difficult
    especially in the case of Freddie Mercury. However, for my money, the
    following shone out from the rest...

    Roger Daltrey (surprisingly to me)
    Elton John (but not on Bohemian Rhapsody)
    David Bowie

    ...but if I had to nominate one person then it would be Lisa
    Stansfield. Great voice and style.

Note for DECwindows users - I *was* joking!

In character ceel mode you'd have seen the [FF] work between my statement and
the last line! I thought it'd be funny to cast in a broad sweeping statement like
that, and then say that I didn't see the show 'cos I was down the pub!
