536.0. "Inspiral Carpets" by WELMTS::GREENB (Without Chadwick we'd be in the) Mon Nov 13 1989 14:47

I saw a few minutes of the Chart Show last night. One band who's
video was played was the Inspiral Carpets (can't remember the song).
I was impressed by their mixture of a kind of indie sound with large
dollops of psychedelia. Does anyone out there know any more about
    this band?

I bought the single you mentioned last Thursday 'Move'. On Saturday
I went out and bought their other 4 E.P.s from this year.

    It's bloody good stuff.

One of the Mancs scallie bands - check out recent concert review.

It's hard to pick a favourite track from the ones I've got now.
They're all really good. Probably 'Find Out Why', 'Butterfly', 'Joe'
    or 'Move'.

Their best song has to be the - as yet unreleased - So this is how
    it feels.

    Check 'em out.

So this is 'scally', eh Bruce? From my NME a few weeks ago, I had
thought these bands were playing (to paraphrase the pop press)
'recycled 70's progressive rock riffs' or some such.

Care to fire any more worthwhile names at me?

    Bob
536.5Oh and I forgot The Farm - real scallies c**p muBAHTAT::STURROCKDear Magda....?Mon Nov 13 1989 19:5223
    O.K....

    Ready,

    Aim,

Happy Mondays - New E.P. out now 'Madchester' or summat - bit clumsy
    (well they were last year)

Bridewell Taxis - New E.P. just recorded (out January) - I like
these alot. Slightly more poppy than the others...excellent trombone.

    Stone(yeach)Roses. - New E.P. out this week!

James - Seem to be attracting the 'scallies' but unlike any of the
others, James have their 'own' sound. New E.P. ('Come Home') out
    next week.

All of the above seem to have something new and original about them
(apart from S.R. IMO only!) and all are worth checking out.

    Bruce.

I've had a Inspiral Carpets tape for some time now and it's pretty good stuff.
The tracks are "Keep the Circle Around", "Seeds of Doubt", "Joe", "Causeway",
"Inside my Head", "Sun Don't Shine", "Theme from Cow", "Butterfly", "26",
"Garage Full of Flowers", and "96 Tears" ... it's that Dung4 tape that Bruce
bought at the Inspirals gig he was at but cos I'm hipper than him I got mine at
least 2 weeks before that ... I have it playng on my Walkman at work most of the
time.

It's worth noting that those aging punks The Stranglers have released "96 Tears"
as their latest single, the song was written by Rudy Martinez ... did he release
it himself or was it a hit for some other group?

I'm really looking forward to tonight ...

    Re 96 Tears:-

*Millions* of Artists have done covers of this track. The two I can
    remember at the moment are:
Big Maybelle (sixties black soul singer)
    and
The Prisoners (Early to mid 80s Garage band)

PS My boss thinks "Marv Johnson" (who?!) sung it first cause he
says that is always the answer to this type of question!!!

Didn't ? and the Mysterions do a version...? Anyway, if you like
that sort of 60's garage music, check out the double lp 'Nuggets',
or even the first Johnathan Richman and the Modern Lovers lp.

BTW, whatever happened to the Prisoners? Good band.

    You heard of the Prisoners?!!!!

Bloody hell, you are the first Non-Mod (I used to be a mod) I have
ever known who heard of the Prisoners!!!

The prisoners split up several years ago (about 2 or 3) due to dodgy
record companies, etc. Jamie Taylor (the organ player) formed a
group called "The James Taylor Quartet". They play what would be
classed as acid jazz...like early seventies jazz sounds.
I went to see them at the Town and Country club about a year ago
and they were excellently well finished but not my style of music
    at the time.
Graham Day formed another group along the same lines as the Prisoners
using several group members (not Jamie Taylor though). The group
are called "The Prime-movers". My brother goes to see virtually
every gig they do and says they are *better* than the Prisoners!
Judging by his love of the Prisoners' sound, they must be bloody
good. They have released one record that I know of, but it was only
    to a very small market.
I might be able to get you some sounds of the Prime-movers if you
like as my brother has their LP.

Re ? and the Mysterions (sp?) Yeah, I think you are right!

536.11WELMTS::GREENBMake mine a Lawlor's 8^) 8^)!!!!!Sat Feb 24 1990 12:328
James, cheers, I certainly would like to hear some Prime Movers.

Didn't another ex-Prisoner form a band with one or two ex-Milkshakes
(another fine band)? could it have been the Len Bright combo, or
Thee Mighty Caesars? And whatever happened to the Tallboys? Am I
    making all this up...?

    Bob
536.12CRISPY::BUSHNELLJPedanticity is my middle nameMon Feb 26 1990 21:2916
    Bob,

OK I will get some Prime Movers sounds on their way to you.
You are based at Welwyn are you not?

I didn't know that any other members of the prisoners formed other
groups. Mind you, it doesn't surprise me as they were all very
    talented!
Milkshakes rings a bell though...I have an LP at home with the
Prisoners on one side and Thee Milkshakes on the other entitled
aptly "The Prisoners Vs. Thee Milkshakes". It's got a funny froggy
write up on the back though (but definately British issue).
I never heard anything more of Thee Milkshakes, more my own fault
    than anything else!

    J/
536.13Stompin at the Klub FootWELMTS::GREENBIt's more fun with a gunTue Feb 27 1990 11:2119
    Thank you, James.

For the unititiated, the Milkshakes played a kind of very rough
r'n'b or rock and roll, in the style of a very rough and uninhibited
early sixties beat combo with 'punk sensibility'. I suppose they
were a part of the early/mid 80s trash or garage thing, along with
the likes of the Prisoners, Tallboys, Stingrays etc.

This scene had two strands really - one had a kind of 50's feel
to it, and had its roots in rockabilly/psychobilly, where all the
bands used stand-up basses, the other had a more 60's feel with
electric basses, the occasional cheesy organ a la Prisoners etc.
The key in either case was to play very energetically.

Oh well, back to the Inspirals....

Any news on a forthcoming lp?

I saw Inspiral Carpets on Snub tv last week. Played a song, I think
it was "How does it Feel" ?

It is the only track I have heard by them, as I have previously
missed them in indie charts due to their "scallie" label.

I think I have been missing out. Is all their other stuff as good
as the track I heard ?

Juju, what I have heard of them is a lot better (IMO). The last
single, 'Move', was in the same sort of vein as the current one,
whereas everything else I have heard, such as 'Find out Why', 'Joe'
and 'Butterfly', has been a lot more raucous, and faster, with
blistering guitar and Hammond organ right up front.

Still looking forward to the lp......

536.19Probably a robbery, bit of skullduggeryGREBO::GURUSuck a Fisherman's FriendFri Mar 16 1990 19:1310
The new Inspiral single is getting remixed by Renegade Soundwave, who were
responsible for that brilliant track "Probably a Robbery" shown on Snub a few
weeks back, and who were name-checked on PWEI's "Can U Dig It".

I agree with a few back that most of the previous Carpets stuff is blistering
guitars and hammond organ, I personally thought that the 2 tracks on Snub were
of poor sound quality, although when we saw them live they were HOT!

Another person waiting for the album.

I see the Inspiral Carpets are touring very soon; doubtless this
will be your last chance to see them before they spend two years
making an album, only tour once every three years etc. Is anyone

536.28Inspiral Carpets LP - `Life' - out now.POBBLE::COTTONOne man, One noteMon Apr 23 1990 22:1714
I saw the Inspirals over a year ago when they were supporting James at the
Dominion and thought `Christ, this is the ugliest pop group since the Rolling
Stones', but, ugly as they were, the Hammond organ sound was quite groovy and
they got most of the relatively small crowd dancing.

The album `Life' is not really anything to get worked up about. Some of the
more up-tempo numbers are quite good, and the deranged childlike lyrics are
interesting in places but all in all it's just another rattly old indie band
from oop north. It contains the last single, `This is How it Feels' with the
correct lyrics in it. (The single version was changed due to the fact that lyrics
about suicide don't sell very many records, and that's a fact, pop kids!)

Yup...'twas a great gig. I would reccomend the inspirals if you fancy
    a rave.

We also obeyed the first two laws of this Notes conference:

Where two or more people from UK_MUSIC are gathered together, they shall
    discuss Bruce Sturrock.

And those people shall then go on to slag of off Mattybs' musical
tastes. (Just joking Matty ;-).. )

    Seriously tho...a great gig.

I noticed in an ad. in last week's "NME" that the U.S. issue of
their "Life" album has FOUR extra tracks over the U.K. release.
Does anyone know what the additional tracks are?

Jan, what do you think of `Commercial Rain'? It's not typical of them
and I personally don't think it's much kop. But then I only have one
mix. Are you giving it away? I'd be glad to have it instead of

Ed, ta much for the info. - as Jim Z. and I were discussing off-line,
it bugs me when record (or, in this case, CD) companies release
different versions of an album in different geographies. In the case
of "Life", I believe they've omitted one track from the original U.K.
release, but added the four tracks from their recent U.K. e.p. ...
why?!?! Is there any real need to do this? Beats me ....

Other examples of this genre include the Stone Roses (2 extra tracks
in the U.S.), FYC 1st (2 extra 12" mixes in the U.S.) and The Wonder
Stuff's "Eight-Legged Groove Machine (4 or 5 extra tracks in the
U.S.). The only major U.K. release that I own which has more tracks
(4, I think) than its U.S. counterpart is Lloyd Cole/Commotions'
    splendid debut, "Rattlesnakes". ;^)

I don't suppose it'd be worth starting a separate topic on this
subject? Or would it .... :-)

One of the reasons for the extra US tracks is the albums are released MONTHS
after the UK releases...The Wedding Presents BIZARRO had the Brassneck EP on
the album here but I had mine for 6 months before it was released...The US
version of LIQUIDIZER by JESUS JONES had 2 extra tracks but I had the UK CD
for 9 months...We get burnt worse because we end up paying UK prices for
things that get released domestically (who would have thought that Jesus
Jones would have released their album here?!?) and then miss out on the
extra tracks...Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...Okay, start a topic!

Wot, no review of the new album yet? I've just read through all of this Note,
and a year ago, they were the hottest thing around! So I thought I'd have a
go and see what they were up to now.

I haven't heard much of the earlier stuff, but if it was described accurately
as 'hot guitars and Hammond organ up front', what's happened to the guitars?!!
The whole album (only 1 listen so far so I might change my mind!) just seems
to have the Hammond as its only idea.

BUT, I did like it!! And will listen more carefully again soon.

Any opinions?

I heard the new single once and I was really impressed.
They seemed to have matured quite a bit. But then again, it was
only one of the songs. Is the rest as good?

I've listened to the LP a few times and overall I'm dissapointed.

`Caravan' is about the best of the bunch of their usual fast/fastish
type of song. The only tracks I find interest in are the slower ones
(don't ask me for titles). It all sounds like their worst track off
`Life' only with new synth/string sounds in the background.

I long for the days of `This Is How It Feels', `Find Out Why',
    `Commercial Rain' etc.

I wish I'd bought the `Massive' LP instead.

Leanne,

Thanks .... I have been sorely led astray. Being a "bit of a Carter fan",
I bought "After the Watershed ( Early learning the difficult way)" when it
hit the shops.
Whilst we are talking about the Inspirals, they cover "Tainted Love" on the
Ruby Trax album. Me?, well I can't wait to hear the Neds version of "I've never
been to me".
