363.0. "Oh-oh-oh oh oh huh!" by WELMTS::GREENB (burning with optimism's flames) Fri Mar 10 1989 14:17

    OK, to avoid the confusion generated in the first liners note, this
    one is for songs which start off with vocal improvisations, 'oh'
    noises, whoops, etc.

    I'll start with an easy one

    ooooooooooOOOOOOOOh yea-ah!

    haaaaaaaaaaah (exhalation)

    Go for it, y'all!

    Getting closer, but still no, I'm afraid

    Another clue - collectively, this artist and his backing band had
    the p*ss taken out of them comprehensively on the B-side of a single
    by the Strawbs!

    C'mon, you'll kick yourself!

363.13Jamming good with Weird and Gilly....AYOV28::DROBBWhen all my dime dancing is thru...Fri Mar 10 1989 19:057
    OK Bob, you just gave the game away - it's the title track off Bowie's
    *classic*, and I mean *all-time* number one, ZIGGY STARDUST album.

    The Strawbs p*sstake was CIGGY BARLUST AND THE WHALES FROM VENUS,
    the flip of their LAY DOWN hit.

    (anyone out there in possession of ZIGGY on CD?)
363.14We have our first winnah!!!WELMTS::GREENBburning with optimism's flamesFri Mar 10 1989 19:478
    I thought you might get it eventually, Dougie!! It was that Strawbs
    clue....

    BTW, do you agree that Bauhaus' cover was extremely naff?

    Take it away, if you want to

363.16Covers like these shouldn't be allowed!!!AYOV28::DROBBPour me a Cuban Breeze, GretschenTue Mar 14 1989 15:577
    Re. 14, yes Bob, I most certainly do consider Bauhaus' version of
    ZIGGY STARDUST to be, as you put it, 'naff'. In fact, I think it's
    downright awful, and merely bearable for the fact that I have an
    even more excrutiating demolition job by Nina Hagen. Disgraceful!

    Anyway, I've drawn a blank on 'oh oh oh oh's for the moment, so
    I'll leave it open to the first person who can come up with one....
363.17I'll take itWELMTS::GREENBburning with optimism's flamesTue Mar 14 1989 16:4210

    me larf and larf!

    Another clue? Some of the members of this group are related. They
    have had, to date, I think, five hit singles, but have only released
    one lp.

    "Long haired lover..." I'm embarrassed just reading that one. "Batman"?
    Where I grew up we always thought it was "dunna dunna ...", and since
    I'm a little touchy about my age I'm not prepared to admit that my
    memory could be failing.....

    So, Nope, Nope.

    They had a single named na na na.
    This was also arround 1968.

363.31Repetitive band name....45944::ROBERTSAbsolutely! .... and why not?Thu Mar 16 1989 14:2317
    Nay !!

    It could be a bit misleading coz the guy that sings it was supposed to
    sing "D'na na....." but he seems to have dropped his "D"! Anyways, not
    an obscure band this, though many people would offer various organs to
    make them so.... The band that took this gem into the UK top 5 in the
    mid-late 1970s are still around (in UK), big clue.....

    Rumour has it, the original band consisted of c.48 assorted
    colours/people, but only 8 waddled harmlessly into stardom! Their
    christmas shows in the Uk are almost as (in)famous as Lindisfarne's.

    Oh yeah, and the title is quite sensible, not "Na na na"!

    Help?

    Well I knew I was giving it all away,

    Yes it was Showadywady, or whatever the d**n name is.

    Song - "I wonder why"
    Was it originally done by Dion, with or withou his Belmonts? Who cares.

    Over to you, then Nick!

    I have enough difficulty thinking of first lines of songs, let alone
    first lines that are vocal improvisations...

    I'll pass the buck to the next person willing to take on the
    mantle of responsibility (he said, changing metaphors in mid stream).
