263.0. "The Housemartins" by GUCCI::SDTEMP () Wed Nov 02 1988 20:41

    I didn't see a note in this conference about the Housemartins, so
    I thought I should start one.

    OK, we know the band is no more, but I thought you guys over in
    the UK would be able to tell me a little more. What news, rumors
    do you hear now?

    In addition, I am curious about an album reviewed in the reviews
    note: the compilation called "Now That's What I Call Quite Good".
    I can't seem to find this album state-side and I was wondering what
    tracks were on it. Should I get it if I have the other two albums?
    I don't know what the UK singles were, so I don't know what I'm
    missing.

    Crank up the rumor mills and let's get going!

    How do you mean they are "no more"? :-(

    Since when is that?

    WEll,

    	I went to school with one of the Housemartins. Norman Cook (infact
    his real name is Quentin Cooke) went to a public school in Reigate,
    surrey. Reigate Grammar School. He is NOT form hull, NOT from a
    less privileged background - and used to talk with a snooty accent.
     So he can hardly claim to 'relate' to the trendy commies with whom
    he hangs around. Infact he used to be quite a nice bloke ( but
    he was threatened with suspension for drawing naughty things in little
    boys bellies !!!!!!!)

     ..... more later

     Phil.

    If you have the first two albums then most of the tracks on the
    them are repeated on Now Thats What I Call ......

    I believe though that some tracks are perhaps fresh to the Now
    album which is essentially a compilation, although a fun album to
    listen to all the same

    Current news on the (ex) Housies is :-

       1. One of them has ponced off to Africa to work with
          the Real Sounds.

       2. One is doing a club DJ act

       3. The other two have formed another band.

    All this might be history by now though.
263.9any news on the 'new band' ??HLFS00::FLORISFloris van den Dool, NIS UtrechtFri Apr 28 1989 13:408
Hi,

Any news about the new band ? (It were Cook and Heaton I believe...)

Is it going to be just more 'Housemartins' with a new name ? I hope it
is....

    The name of the new band which contains Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway

    charts.
263.11Finaly !! More news ??HLFS00::FLORISFloris van den Dool, NIS UtrechtThu Jun 15 1989 12:188
Thats the news I have been hoping to hear for months !!!!

Anybody able to comment on the single ? Is it like the Housemartins -
I hope so - or are they following a new musical direction?

Any news on a LP or CD ??

263.12Norman CookESKIMO::POTTERShe gives good headacheMon Jul 17 1989 18:165

    One other member of the Housies, Norman Cook, has a single in the
    UK charts with none other than Billy Bragg. I'm in the US at the
    moment and only heard it once before heading out here, but it sounded
    OK ... maybe someone else can update this.
263.13Hate them, like the music!SUBURB::COLEJsitting on a DEC chairMon Aug 14 1989 19:1915

    If you see the Beautiful south you will realise that live, although
    they deny it, they spend more time pandering to the anorak brigade
    who followed the housies than anything else...

    I have seen them all in Hull and a miserable bunch they are...

    3 of them have degrees, and yet they hate students in Hull and have
    said so...

    I liked them as a group, but now realise how hypocritical they are!

    Did he really do a single with Billy Bragg? That would be QUITE
    interesting to hear! Anyone know what the name of the song is?
