539.0. "B.O.C note (for Sarah)" by LASHAM::MAILROOM (Pining for the fjords.) Thu Nov 16 1989 14:59

This note is for the discussion of Blue Oyster Cult , a group who
have been together with barely a lineup change (apart from a three
year period) for just about twenty years .

The albums I can think of for now are :

    Blue Oyster Cult
    Tyranny and Mutation
    Secret Treaties
On Your Feet Or On your Knees (live)
    Spectres
    Agents of Fortune
    Cultosaurus Erectus
    Some Enchanted Evening (live)
    Fire Of Unknown Origin
    Revolution By Night
    E.T.Live

The only song of there's that I can think of is

"Don't fear the reaper" which was excellent, I might try an album
    or two soon though...

Don't fear the Reaper was on "Agents of Fortune" (1976) . This is
widely available and is being constantly reprinted , so you should
be able to get a copy PA .

I missed an album . Imaginos , the most recent . I probably missed
    another one or two aswell

539.3What else do you like???BREW11::OCOYNo Scotoma's hereThu Nov 23 1989 15:1919
    Thanks....

I'm gonna take your list and run to my nearest record shop (Andy
    Cash), and buy the lot.....

I managed to see B.O.C. in Oxford at a little dive place, they were
supported by Girls School (I think(?)-who were dreadful), but B.O.C.
were excellent. That was ages ago now, I bought Tyranny etc. before
the concert - to get some idea of the music, and I've been converted
    ever since....

Have they got any dates lined up???? Sorry for not replying sooner,
    I couldn't get in....

    Speak to you soon...

I don't know when BOC will be touring again - haven't seen anything
in the music press for a while . In fact the last time I saw them
was back in 1985 in Bristol , but the excellent concert was rather
spoiled for me as i split with my girlfriend on that night .

I saw them before that at the Hammersmith Odeon , where they were
brilliant . Must rank in the top ten of concerts I've seen . Others
include Marillion , Hawkwind , Blackfoot , and =gasp= Garry Glitter

Blue Oyster Cult were the first band I went to see ... there I've said it. Guess
who the support band were, none other than JAPAN.

Why is it so bad to admit - they're a great rock band .

Do people consider them a heavy metal band then ?

I've always thought of them as just a rock band , there are very
few heavy metal songs as such in their repertoire , OK there's their
cover of Born To Be Wild , which is excellent , and probably a few
hard tracks on each album . Maybe their subject matter has always
been close to heavy metal , but there is such a variety in the
treatment of the songs . For Example :

    Mirrors - Almost Gary Numanish
Blue Oyster Cult , especially , is almost psychidelic
Cultosaurus Erectus - the Heaviest album , but nearer to Hawkwind
    or Grateful Dead than anything
Agents of Fortune - some of this is pure "pop"

Overall , then , I would say no way are they a heavy metal group
( I hate that term anyway ) , but they are definitely a great rock
    band .

Fire of Unknown Origan, truely a good album,

only problem they never got credit for their

talents Recently, I saw them in Boston on the

1981 Fire of Unknown Origan tour w/Foghat both

bands were Awsome!!!! as for foghat last year they

William Burroughs had the term 'Heavy Metal' in one of his books in the
sixties, I believe this is where it came from. If memory serves, the
term was first used to describe The Byrds!

RE. a couple back

This is probably the only time you're allowed to shout, but I think you should
say "ALL-IN-1". Apparently, in front of customers, this is important for all
sorts of silly trademark laws.
