1201.0. "What is this tune (slight return)?" by WELCLU::GREENB (Gratuitous use of flute) Fri Jan 07 1994 17:45

This tune, which I've heard a couple of times now, is really driving me
mad. It has a kind of slow dancey beat, and a sample of what sounds
like about four million people chanting the same three or four note
phrase repeatedly - I'm sure this chant has been sampled or lifted from
a film of some sort. The whole thing has a kind of massive,
overwhelmingly joyful feel to it. It is totally wonderful. My questions
    are;

    1. What and who is it?

    2. What film was the chant sampled from?

any words or anything else that may give someone the faintest idea what
    song you are on about??????

Rich (who likes a challenge, but can't even begin to start this one)

1201.2WELCLU::GREENBGratuitous use of fluteFri Jan 07 1994 18:0110
Well, Rich, I can't give you a lot of help about the words as it's more
of a kind of, er, wordless chant that goes, um, kind of Ah-ah-ah (on an
ascending scale), then ah-ah-aaaaah on a descending scale. Plus it's
basically an instrumental with chanting rather than a song. One thing i
do know, though - it's not that Gregorian stuff of a few years back.

I reckon Rod will know what it is, as it has a kind of hippy vibe and a
    bassline to swim in.

Although I read your note with interest I can't tell you what this is -
I'm sure I haven't heard it. Being out here I don't get to hear stuff as
soon as you do. But are you sure it's not that Gregorian stuff of a few
years back? Because Enigma (for it was them) have just released a new
record.

Its not that thing that samples the 5 tones from Close Encounters is it?

1201.5Going even more mad now.....WELCLU::GREENBGratuitous use of fluteFri Jan 07 1994 18:3910
You could be getting close, Mike - although it's not the famous do do
do duh do spaceship bit from Close Encounters, it may be something from
the film. Is there a scene with all these people chanting something in
some kind of enraptured state, as if they don't really know why they
are singing this thing? If so, that's the sample on this record.

It definitely isn't the Enigma Gregorian stuff, it's much more recent
    than that.

Helpfully yours,

    Bob,

Why not phone Rod or someone else (Rich?) and sing it to them!

    Helpfully yours,
    Goldy.

If there's anyone near you with the luxury of VAXstation 4000s, you can
hum it into that (using their DECsound stuff) and by the miracle of
Compound Document Architecture anyone else with DECsound will be able
to hear it. Given that most folks don't even use the pictures
capability in Notes, I don't expect many takers... but you never know,
    and if you're desperate...

    Bob,

Does it sound like an African chant? (Music from "If"?) Where did you
    hear it? (British Airways ad?).

Give us a few more clues..

Based on Bob's perfect description and my equally-perfect knowledge of all
things musical this can only be Trans-Global Underground's 'Temple Head'.

Possibly.

My guess(es) at the chant would be:

    a) something from Einstein on The Beach, by Phillip Glass. There are a
lot of choral style chants in there, one way or another.
    b) a sample from Koyaanisqatsi or the other film (Powa-something),
       music also by Phillip Glass
    c) Just possibly a sample from The Mission (The film with De Niro and
       Irons)

I know it's not Phillip Glass, but Trans-global Underground is the one,
    I think.

Thanks for putting me out of my miserable confusion.

Well, that has to be one of the most obsure note entries that I've ever read:
marvellous. Perhaps this could replace the 1st liners note :-o

Sounds interesting (can anyone remember that programme on radio 3 Derek
    Jewel times music correspondant?)

Is this transglobal underground a group, single or album. What's the track
called, and what album is it taken from?
Have you any product numbers/label details?

You mean you'd buy a record based on someone 'humming' a few notes he heard on
the radio?!! Strange.

Well, it's your lucky day:

Trans-Global Underground - Dream of 100 Nations

(Nation Records NR021CD)

1 Temple Head
2 Shimmer
3 Slowfinger
4 I, Voyager
5 La Voix Du Sang
6 El Heddud
7 This is the Army of Forgotten Souls
8 Sirius B
9 Earth Tribe
10 Zombie'ites
11 Tutto Grande Discordia
12 Hymn to Us

Tracks 1/6 and 2/7 are also available as singles. Musicians listed are 12, so
I'm not typing them in as well, but the amazing Natacha Atlas sings on 4,6,9,
10,11. Singer on 1 is 'Sherrif'

Just bought the album today - I've driven myself nuts with Temple Head,
and the rest of it is almost as good too.

Even better than Dream of 100 Nations is the Underworld album. those
boys sound like they smoke an awful lot of funny cigarettes before and
    during recording....
