1115.0. "New Elvis Costello Release ?" by CLARID::CHARLES () Thu Feb 11 1993 14:59

    Anyone heard the new Elvis Costello release yet? - I can't remember
    what it's supposed to be titled, but I remember reading about a
    month ago that he got together with a string quartet to make this
    album. The publicity says it's good stuff, but then it would...

    I'm wary of handing out dosh for this because much as I like the guy
    he does come up with some duff albums now and then, take the
    last one f'instance.

    Elaine.

    It's called the Juliet Letters or something like that. Some of it was
    played on BBCs Late Show a couple of weeks back. I'm usually a big EC
    fan but this was sheer drivel.

    I love the very little that I've heard of it.

    I read a very bad review of it, which said that it didn't work on any
    level. In the reviewers opinion, voices and string quartets aren't
    meant to mix.
1115.4Some you like..CLARID::CHARLESThu Feb 11 1993 16:519

    He's a bit hit and miss... take "Almost Blue" for example, I loved
    this but hardly anyone else does. His early stuff I love (doesn't
    everyone say that?) but the last few albums have been a bit dire.

    At least he keeps trying to come up with something different and I
    always hope I'm going like what he does.

1115.5Wendy James connectionUPROAR::PLOWMANDCall your motherThu Feb 11 1993 19:5610
    Hasn't he just penned an album for Wendy James too?

    Apparently they only met briefly and that was AFTER he'd written the
    album for her. She wrote him a letter saying she'd love to work with
    him.

    Could be either brilliant or absolutely terrible.
    Anyone heard any of it?

    Just as a note of interest, there is an lengthly interview and article
    with Elvis Costello about the new stuff in this months Q magazine (the
    issue with Sting and Bob Geldof on the cover).

    Taking this ever further from EC, that issue of Q has a brilliant
    copyright notice on the first page. Under the standard bit about "This
    magazine shall not be blah blah" there's a remark along the lines of
    "and Bob Geldof's remarks shall not on any account be shown to Mike
    Tyson."

    Q, as if it mattered, rates the EC album very highly.

    Well, the interview with Geldof and Sting asked the question......

    Would you rather

    a) Watch me sh*g your missus or
    b) Be taken up the Gary Glitter by 'Iron' Mike Tyson.

    In depth, huh ?

Just as a note of interest, John Wesley Harding is 99 % elvis costello. A new
release comes out this month.

    Only the vocals are Elvis Costello. The rest of JWH is equal parts
    Jackson Browne (callow mopishness), Linda Ronstadt (apparent IQ), and
    Engelbert Humperdink (stupid name).

    >Engelbert Humperdink (stupid name).

    His real name is Wesley Harding, so it's not as though he stretched it.

    He may not be as talented as Elvis Costello, but he's sure a lot cuter!
