409.0. "ALEX HARVEY" by YUPPY::OHAGANB () Tue Apr 25 1989 18:35

Anyone out there remember (The Sensational) Alex Harvey?. I only
"discovered" him about four years ago;I would have been about 6
at the time he released "Framed" (Mungo Jerry was about as radical
as I could get at that age).

Anyway,'tis a pity the guy has since departed (Was it '82 when he
died?) as I can't see anyone on the current "scene" who even comes
near in terms of songs, ideas, and humour.

Here's a list of the material I've got.Can anyone add to that
    list.

    Framed
    Next
    The Impossible Dream
    Live
    Tomorrow Belongs To Me
    S.A.H.B. Stories
    The Rock Drill
    Fourplay (S.A.H.B. without Alex)

I know of the following titles, are they any good?:

Alex Harvey And His Soul Band
    The Soldier On The Wall
    The Mafia Stole My Guitar

    Anyone know of any bootlegs?

And finally does anybody know where I can get hold of a copy of
the "Live in New York" video.I think it was deleted last year.

    Hail Vibrania!!!!

I have a 'Best of....' album which it has taken me about four years to
actually get round and play the whole of....even though I think he is
brill. Don't ask me why it took so long to get round to play, I can't
    really explain, it just happened.

Anyway, he is one of those 'characters' from the past who I would just
love to have seen live but wasn't quite old enough, but I do know
someone who did and am I jealous...

Oh god I'm not even getting to finish this note inpeace without getting
dragged off to YET ANOTHER MEETING.

Saw him live at St Albans civic about 74 - pretty good. I think
the support band may have been Judas Priest!

The "gittar player" was the excellent Zal Clemenson who I last saw
about three years ago on TV playing in Midge Ure's band. The rest
of the SAHB's ended up with Michael Schenker in the early eighties
and I actually met Chris Glenn about five years ago in my local
pub (He was slagging off the bass playing ability of UFO's Pete
Way).Well that's my claim to fame!!

"Disappointed". So sorry to have disappointed you but were'nt you
wearing silver platform shoes in those days ? Short trousers!! I
was anticipating the advent of short trousers as a major fashion

I remember seeing Alex Harvey in about 1975 at Celtic Park in Glasgow.
He was part of the support line up on "The Who Put The Boot in Tour" -
at least I think that's what it was called - when they gigged at
Glasgow, Charlton ,Swansea. Was A.H. on at the other grounds.
Also managed to pick up a copy of "Next"..so I'm off to listen to
    that now...

I'm showing my age again.. I saw Alex Harvey a number of times.
Anyone else remember the ott versions of "Framed"? One tour he was a
framed criminal, next he was Hitler, finally he came on carrying a
cross at one of the Reading fests.

He also recorded an album called (if I remember) "The Penthouse Tapes"
which had covers of Alice Coopers "School's Out" and the Osmonds "Crazy
Horses" amongst others. Anyway, must go and get an M.O.T. for the zimmer...

    re : last 17

Just picked up the discussion and thought I'd throw in my memories
    of the Sensational Alex.

I bought Next in 1971 and was so impressed, I bought as many of
his albums that I could find.

A group of us went to see any London gigs he did and I remember one at
the New Victoria Theatre when he called for people to get on stage
with him. What a rush ! I managed to clamber up there for a moment
    of glory.

At the same gig, he did a version of "Dancing Cheek to Cheek" and
he was joined by several long-legged lovelies who danced around
a bit and then, towards the end of the number, all turned round
to reveal bare cheeks behind ! That got a cheer.

His "Delilah" (appearance on Top of the Pops !!!) is fondly remembered
because it became a party sing-a-long number for us. Does anyone
    remember that ?

Ok so its a long time since someone last wrote anything in here, but I
ve only discovered this notesfile recently.

Ahhh SAHB...what memories...Christmas in Scotland meant 4 SAHB gigs in
Glasgow (ESSENTIAL) and 2 or 3 SAHB gigs in Edinburgh (well Edinburgh
is Edinburgh, isnt it ??). Anyway we usually went to ALL the Glasgow
gigs..usually at Greens Playhouse Aka Apollo (RIP) and 1 or 2 of the
Edinburgh gigs. THe man was great, the band was tight and they were
born live entertainers, how sadly he is missed..as are most of my
original SAHB albums, left at an irate ex-girlfriends house. They are
still available as mid-price albums and usually surface in HMV etc
mammoth sales from time to time.

Claim to fame ??? Wellllllll my mate Billy McGavin's grannie lived
next door to Alex's mother and we sometimes took his dog for a walk.
It got us a clip round the ear from a bloke cos the dogs name was Hey
You, and the guy took exception to a couple of teenagers shouting Hey
    You come here !!!.

God! More replies on the Alex Harvey note! From a roadie indeed! Does
the song "Ribs n balls" mean much to you or did Mr Harvey create the
line about sending the roadies "out for more". Got any stories about

Another late reply from the "I ligged with Alex Harvey" gang. I met him
in a pub in London 'bout 6 weeks before he died (the drummer in my band
had just finished touring with him before he joined us,some career move
huh?). I remember having great difficulty understanding anything he
said, which is not suprising as he was having great difficulty saying
it!. Our drummer had some good on_the_road tales all of which I've
forgotten. The first time he met him was 5 mins before the first gig
as Alex didnt bother turning up for the rehearsals or the sound-check.
All I can remember about him is how drunk he was, sad really. Only saw
him play once, supporting The Who in Swansea, great gig, when they did
Faith Healer it sent shivers down me spine.

Yes I remember SAHB with great affection. Great live entertainers. I
was never really a fan until i saw them as support to The Who at
Charlton during the Put the boot in tour, about 78 i think. It was
raining thngs were running late and people wanted The Who on. SAHB came
on to a not too warm reception. Antway eithin a short space of time the
really had the crowd with them. I remember the Valley being
reverberating with noise as the whole crowd joined in with Deliah. I
went sraight out and bought the LIVE, Impossible Dream and Framed LP's.
I have added a few more since, must play em tonight.

BTW does anyone whom went to Charlton remember the bloke who climbed up
the floodlight pylon to the top and then hung upside down.

I have just discovered this notesfile and note topic. I have been
looking for a copy of TSAHB Live album/CD. It was not available
in the U.S. without special order, back in the 70's. If anyone
can point me to a source, either U.S. or U.K. I would be most
appreciative. I belive the album was a "double live", it included
    Vambo, Tommahawk Kid...

    Fred,

Unless, there was a different US version, doubt it, this is very much
a single album/CD. It's still available on vinyl over here in the UK,
I think, but I'll check out the CD status for you and mail you. For the
record, (ho hum) the track listing, in no particular order is:

Fanfare - Faith Healer - Vambo (Impossible Dream version) - Framed
    - Compliments to the Chef - Tomahawk Kid - Delilah -

409.31Alex Harvey Soul BandPAVONE::TURNERThu Sep 02 1993 18:3619

Does anyone have any details of the availability of the "Alex Harvey And
His Soul Band" album mentioned in the base note? I think it dates back
to about 1964-65, and I also recall hearing of a live album recorded
in Hamburg at about the same time. Could these possibly have made it
onto CD? Highly unlikely, I know...

The reason I ask is that I recently came across a "rare tracks"
compilation that included the B-side from a single released by Alex Harvey
And His Soul Band, back in the mid-sixties. The song was called "Ain't
That Just Too Bad" (composed by a certain "Tennant") and it is absolute
dynamite! Personally I much prefer this incarnation of the band to the
more theatrical SAHB of the 1970s.

Bit of an obscure one, I know, but I'm sure you all like a challenge!

    Many thanks,

    "And the monarchs sitting pretty

He certainly had a way with words did old Alex. Oh and has anybody
noticed the heavily borrowed rendition of "Delilah" used on a current
TV ad. Good time to re-release it methinks, plus there's probably
footage available from Top of the Pops circa '75.
