Err... I stood near Fruitbat at a gig once... sometimes I see hairy
people at airports who could be in the pop business. Does that count?

On the whole I'm disinclined to speak to pop people because what would
I say other than, "I like your records" (or not as the case may be),
and, "I want to have your babies, let's start right now". Both these
statements underline how famous, successful and desirable they are and
you aren't, so, I keep my distance.

An acquaintance of mine from school played bass for Alien Sex Fiend for
a while.

Also big John from Goodbye Mr McKenzie, Blood Uncles and some punk band
(UK Subs?) once stuck his fingers in my beer at a Janes Addiction gig.

No, no photos please, speak to my publicist later.

     Bib,

You have just stolen one of my claims to fame. I saw Johnny Curious
and the Strangers ( featuring Bob "Chubbles" Green ) at the Electric
Ballroom ( or was it the Camden Palace ) in 1978 (?).

As a barman in the cocktail bar at Birmingham Airport when I was a
teenager, I regularly served drinks to the rich and famous, some of whom
were in the music business. Not once did I ever get to even SEE anybody
who I was remotely interested in talking to. Of course my heroes were
there in droves when I had days off.

Have talked to Paul Weller and Bruce Foxton quite a few times -
Rick Buckler wasn't interested in talking to plebs though -

Also the Chords and slagged off dave stewart when he was with the
tourists for wearing victorian gear - the frilly shirt n' all that

Also was talking to Big Country when extremley drunk - I was holding
the rice while my mate was pouring the hot sweet n' sour sauce - over
my leg - they got a good laugh at me dancing about in agony.

Had to make a sharp exit after slagging off the members of Crass - told
them they were nothing but a con and they couldn't call themselves
musicians as they played thier guitars with wooly gloves on - they
    weren't too pleased.

1233.14not so well known but.....WOTVAX::STONEGTemperature Drop in Downtime Winterland....Thu Sep 01 1994 21:3631

a friend used to have a Radio show on radio Stoke and I used to sit in on
the interview sessions, asking a few questions, picking tracks etc... A
few I can remember are :-

Terraplane - who I then drove to their gig after the interview, the
seemed okay but I was never quite sure why they needed hankies tied
    around their legs...

Twisted Sister - Dee Snider (Sp?) was awesome, he's about 6'6" tall
without the high-heels. the rest of the band were big too and were
surprisingly 'nice' people. They turned up with there very own American
body guard who was still wearing a shoulder holster but of course
hadn't got a gun ! The band didn't seem to want him around, he was shut
outside the studio and didn't seem very happy at all...

Magnum - I knew these guys quite well for a while, my girlfriend at the
time thought they were great, so she got to interview them a couple of
times and we'd usually have a few beers afterwards.

Demon - still mates with John Waterhouse their ace guitarist and Dave Hill
the writer/vocalist the only two left, a couple of other friends did
Drums/backing vocals and some Bass on the last album.

and finally for now The Church, the best thing since sliced bread as
they say ! not exactly mates but we always have a good chat after their
    - far too few - gigs.

    more later perhaps.....

I used to knock about with the now (not then) drummer of New Model Army
and even have a valentine card from him!!

I briefly courted the guitarist out of Tobruk (sp?) but he jilted me
because he couldn't beat me at pool.

And finally, my friend used to play in Test Department and
Band of Holy Joy and even better - Mr Winkle (That Petrol Emotion's dog)
stayed with us for the weekend!

About 1986 I was looking to buy something by the House of Love, having
seen them live and thinking they were great, but (big mistake) not
really having a handle on their name. So I bought a 12" by the Band of
Holy Joy instead, thinking it was them, and was so appalled by it on
the first listen that I don't think I've ever listened to it since.

My claim to fame involves Robbie out of Take That. I was once a from
prefect of his cousin's class. My cousins also go to Robbie's old
school. I do not share the same taste in football with Robbie as he
supports Port Fail while I support the Potteries finest, STOKE CITY.

Well Next weekend I'm going to Wales for my Father-in-laws birthday.
Amongst the guests will be Hugh McDowell, ex-cellist with E.L.O.
I've been to a number of parties in the past in his converted chapel.

My first claim to fame was on borad a TWA 747 en-route to LA (20 years ago).
Sitting in front of me was this guy with lots & lots of multi-coloured hair.
Yes it was Roy Wood from Wizard.

1233.30WELCLU::GREENBKeep it spikeyThu Oct 13 1994 12:1118
I could go on about the gigs I did in one band I was in, who we
supported at various venues etc. I could tell you what a git Billy Idol
really is (not to mention Tony James), what nice people the Stranglers
are really, same for Ultravox etc. Oh yeah, and what a git Adam Ant is,
    likewise Gary Numan...

But I won't, because I'll come across like some sad old ex-punk, and
what I really want to do is appear Now! and Happening! and Stuff!,
because Stiff Records (more sad old ex-punks, maybe?) are coming to see
my current band play on Monday, and they are very interested in signing
    us.

The upshot of all this is that if/when I leave, you can all put notes
in here about hobnobbing, but not necessarily snogging, with me.

    Eye thenk yew.

were just sitting having a pint (whole band minus Dave Gedge who was

nice enough chaps - and went and sat down to start getting rat-ar$ed.

1233.36If you're joking, I'm tired of it. But....CHEFS::GEORGEMEveryone thinks he looks daftMon Oct 17 1994 19:0516
If you genuinely don't know what I'm talking about, then a brief explanation
follows....

*I like the Wedding Present (Northern guitar based indie band) quite a lot.
*I tend to enthuse about them with my inherent joviality and youthful
exhuberance, but most people don't like it.
*I am famed for receiving a lot of abuse from members who are now gone or
hiding, for cluttering this conference with pointless remarks, usually
 referring to the Wedding Present.
*I don't care
*cos I'm such a rebel
*The Wedding Present are, in fact, quite popular, and I'm chuffed because I met
 them.

End of story, I suppose. Hope this helped your understanding of one of my many
pointless contributions to this Conf.
