558.0. "Christmas No.1 ?" by SHAPES::BROWNM () Fri Dec 01 1989 16:08

What do you all reckon will be the Christmas No.1 ?

There's so many good records to choose from.

    `Dear Jessie' -	Madonna (I hope)
    or
`Someday We Will All Be Together'	-	Claire Hamill (Love it)

Radio 1 did a poll, and Erasure - `You Surround Me' came out as the
listeners' favourite. Personnally I don't think it has a chance.

I just heard on Radio 1 that SAW are producing `Do They Know It's
Christmas 2'. It is to be recorded by all their artists on PWL
    records.

No doubt that'll be th end of the world!!!

    Slight Rat-hole...

I havn't bought a single in years and certainly have no recordings
by Madonna. However, I bought Dear Jessie as our 2 year old dughter's
    name is Jessie.

I noticed engraved on the run-out where all those famous messages
have appeared over the years was the words 'XMAS 1'!

So, I shall be interested to see if the prediction comes true!

Guess the prediction didn't come true.

Number 5 was the highest it got I think.

So who is going to be No 1 this Xmas, I suppose it will be that rubbish
by The Beatles, or does Oasis - Don't look back in anger - stand a
chance ? Alternatively, has Sir Cliff got a seasonal ditty up his
    sleeve ?

I will be mightily impressed if Oasis is No. 1 at Xmas given that it
isn't released until January 15. Favourite according to the Bookies is
the awful version of 'Wonderwall' by the Radio 2 symphony orchestra or
    whatever they are known as.

    Stuart,

I'm sure you'll be heard singing it in "The Highbury Singing
    Section" at some stage !!

    Ian.
558.13CHEFS::STRATFORDSGroovy, Laidback and NastyWed Dec 20 1995 17:208
    Ian,

I can say with 100% certainty that, even if I was canal-dipping drunk,
I will never be heard singing that particualr little ditty.

    Honest.

    Stuart
558.14Cheap shot, Stuart ??? More accurate than Wright and Co though !!!CHEFS::CROSSAWed Dec 20 1995 17:346
    Stratto,
Why are you having a pop at me when replying to Ian (Rangers cannot
beat Motherwell ho ho ho) Rutherford ????

    		     Stretch.
558.15CHEFS::STRATFORDSGroovy, Laidback and NastyWed Dec 20 1995 17:4311
    Stretch,

Because your antics the other evening were excessively stupid and make
    you a particularly easy target.

I was merely highlighting that even if I got as bladdered as you had
and had felt the same inclination to go swimming in a local river in
the very early hours, I still would not sing the current version of
    that little ditty.

    Stuart

I'll be quite happy to see Mr Flowers' version of Wonderwall as the Christmas
no. 1; even more so if it knocks that bloody awful song by The Weirdo off the
top spot, and prevents any last minute release by Sir Cliff from sneaking in.

Chris.

I don't know if you know but Sir Cliff does have a release out, along
with Olivia Newton John. They gave it quite bad odds because it wasn't
climbing the charts fast enough. Never mind....hang on, maybe if I
spent all my pocket money to help it.... ;-)

re .17

Is that the one called "A Winter's Tale" or something similar? I saw a
poster advertising it one the way to work this morning. Haven't heard
it though.

It better be Mike Flowers. I hope he keeps it up as well, fnaar, and
proceeds to take the p*ss on a regular basis. I love that cheesy
    Radio 2/Melody Radio orchestral sound.

    Burt Bacharach.
