468.0. "The Cult" by FORTY2::ETHERIDGE (Groovy) Wed Aug 09 1989 17:13

Surprisingly enough, there is no note devoted to The Cult. As Ive just
got my tickets for the UK dates I thought it might be nice to have a
chat about the lads as it seems they've deserted Britain in favour of
the 'trendy' LA music scene, and feel only able to come back for 5
    gigs.

Sections of the music press slagged of 'Sonic Temple' for apparent
copying of other peoples styles. Even a comparison to Deep Purple for
that organ bit on 'Sweet Soul Sister'. How ridiculous. I thought it was
a great album, a sort of cross between 'Love' and 'Electric' and I like
the way The Cult have made their music more heavy rocky. At the same
time 'Dreamtime' loses nothing of that old charm when I listen to it
    now. Comments?

Where/when are they Cult playing ??

I love the Cult, they are one of my fav bands.

Billy Duffy has improved as a player a A LOT ! On "Love" he was okay,
I think on "Electric" he'd just found out what fifths and fourths
were 8^) (and power chords!!) but now he's getting his act together
he's turning out to be a half decent player.

I thought the Love album had a very original sound, whereas the
critics said they sounded a bit too much like AC/DC on Electric.
Now they're getting put down as Zeppelin/Purple clones. Gawd, have
these people got nothing better to do than put labels on bands??

The old Southern Death Cult stuff is great too, a bit weirder, when
they were in their physcedelic mood.

I really like the single "Ciao Baby" and the album cut "Soul Asylum"
(even though, I have to admit - the bass riff is a bit Kashmir-y.

Ian Astbury's gotta do something with thoses split ends though 8^)

Its about time somebody started a note on The Cult !

To me the quality of playing on both the "Electric" and "Sonic
Temple" albums is excellant. The introduction of Mickey Curry on
drums on the "Sonic Temple" album, in my view has made them sound
a lot tighter and a lot heavier than usual.
By the way what happened to the old drummer ?

    They threw him out.

Les Warner played on Electric & Dreamtime (before they went
"heavy-metal" - I'll use that in the loosest of term) & was thrown
out when the Cult went off & sunned themselves in L.A.

He says that he was given the line by Billy Duffy:

         "I'm selling my flat
          chucking my girlfriend
& throwing you out the band"

Les was only there as a non-permament member of the band, he says
that his drum roadie was getting payed more than him.

      & why not.

Hi to everyone in the UK. I'm from Massachusetts here in the US. I'm
glad I hooked up with the English Cult note, because everyone in the US
considers them metal now, which I don't like. In the US, all anyone
knows about is Electric and now Sonic Temple. To them, Love was a weak
album and they've never heard of Dreamtime.

To me-Love was a killer album and Dreamtime was probably their coolest
album yet. Electric was their worst, but I like it, and Sonic Temple is
a good album. It's better than Electric.

Anyway, if anyone sees them at Wembley, let me know how the show was,
because I can't wait to see them headline in the US. I saw them twice
when they were touring with Metallica (what a pair) and when they were
with Billy Idol and Guns n' Roses. I was too young to see them on the
Love tour, although I wanted to. (Mommy wouldn't let me). By the way,
I would LOVE a UK tour shirt. If you see them at Wembley, I would pay
a good sum of cash to get my hands on one.

Also, it's *really* hard to get my hands on UK released material.
I have Southern Death Cult, Dreamtime (and the Spiritwalker and
Resurrection Joe singles), plus Love (Rain, Sanctuary singles plus Live
at the Lyceum) Electric, etc... What am I missing that you know of,
and how can I get it?

Darren, I just want to mention that you're wrong about Les Warner. He
played with the Cult starting on their Love tour. (It was the drummer
from Big Country that played on that album). It was Nigel Preston who
played drums on Dreamtime and on She Sells Sanctuary. They got rid of
him because all he could play were those Indian-tom beats, and they
wanted to get harder. They had Bryan Adams' drummer on Sonic Temple,
and now they're touring with Matt Sorum (don't know where he's from).

I heard they were touring with Aerosmith now in the UK. Is that true
    or are they headlining?

Sorry about being so long-winded, but I didn't want to talk with
metalheads about the Cult anymore. They shouldn't be metal, although
    they're still cool.

    Have a good one!

Do you have the "Fatman" single by Southern Death Cult?

How about "God's Zoo" by the Death Cult?

I certainly hope that the Cult avoid the A's tour. I think Metallica

...although they would be a killer opener for Aerosmith. It would
certainly be a better matchup than Metallica and The Cult. Aerosmith
put on a good show on Perm. Vacation (Dokken opening). The Aerosmith
fans would be more into The Cult than Metallica's fans.

Well, I went to Wembley Arena on Friday having never seen The Cult live
before, and I must say that none of my preconceptions about how thay would be
live were shattered. Terrific. Very powerful.

Heres a list of songs played, in not the order that they were played.

From 'Sonic Temple'

Sun King - a storming rendition
Fire Woman - another stormer
American Horse
Edie(Ciao Baby)
Sweet Soul Sister
Soul Asylum
New York - is that the title? I can never remember

From 'Electric'

Wild Flower - a stormer of an old fave with the crowd
Lil Devil - another old fave lovingly recreated
Love Removal Machine - yet another classic from the Electric album
Born To Be Wild

From 'Love'

Love - one of the best tracks from Love given a good thumping
Rain - and another fave
She Sells Sanctuary - yes, and another

Were there others? I cant remember. Duffy was superb on guitar, and gave it
all of those classic textbook guitar hero poses. Stewart on bass was solid
and dependable as ever, as was the drummer, some guy called Matt Sorum. Astbury
however had a bit of a bad throat so took to singing only the second halves of
lines towards the end of the show which was a shame. Supposedly they were
filming the Saturday night performance but I wonder if Astbury's voice would
made it through to Saturday night. But anyway, the boys gave it all they had,
and were all over the stage like headless chickens for the evening. Rock and
roll.

From Sonic Temple, I wish theyd played Soldier Blue, a personal favourite.

Supporting were the Claytown Troupe, a fairly standard HM act. They went down
fairly well with the crowd and had a few good numbers.

The programme made interesting reading aswell. Besides all the 'The Cult are
not just and ordinary rock band' sort of pap was one of those Pete Frame band
family trees. It revealed that Duffy was in a band with Morrisey and that he
also taught Johnny Marr his first chords at the age of 16. So is Billy Duffy
responsible for depressing music in this country via his spawning the musical
careers of The Smiths ;^). I'll leave you to argue this one out.

Anyway, thats my account. Anyone got anything else to add?

Ian.

    Ian-

If they were anything like they were in the States, then they must have
    put on a killer show!

They didn't open with the Phoenix, though? That was great here.
    That's my favorite tune.

Did they have an extra guy to do keyboards or rhythm guitar? They said
they were going to get one when they started headlining.

Were they being L.A. metal or British? They were being metal one of the
times I saw them and more British the second time.

I'm trying to get an idea of what they are going to do here when they
    come around again.

    Nothing from Dreamtime?

    Thanks for the report.

Steve,
They opened with 'New York'. A very tense start to the show with lots of
darkness and eeries noises, then blasting into the riff and hell broke loose.

Yes they did have an extra guy on keyboards (Sweet Soul Sister would have been
tricky without one) but he wasnt on stage all the time, and as for rhythm guitar,
Duffy didnt appear to need one, cos he was generating so much noise on his own.
I think at some points he used some sort of effect, (or the mixing boys did) to
keep any rhythm bits repeating while he did his thang. Dont know fully.

As far as being L.A. or British metal, they were just rocking hard, do you
know what I mean? They didnt particularly remind of the L.A. metal bands or
your typical British Iron Maidens.

Im afraid there was nothing from Dreamtime. It would seem that they have left
that episode behind them and moved onto new pastures. Indeed, the tour programme
described how The Cult thought of Dreamtime as little more than a glorified
demo.

A little news on the Cult...

Jamie Stewart, the original bassist for the band has left Ian and
Billy. He cites personal and musical differences. Jamie still lives
in England while Ian and Billy have decided to stay in LA. Looks like
Jamie may be coming out with something on his own. Probably something
    more like old Cult.

Drummer Matt Sorum, who sat in on their last tour has also left the
band. According to close and personal sources, he just recently tried
out for Guns & Roses, who were auditioning drummers here in Boston.
(G&R's original drummer was booted out of the band)

Assuming that the spots get filled soon, the band will be back in the
    studio in October.
