Are we talking about the current "fight" here, or the bands in general?

If we're talking about the current singles, Blur win hands down as far as I'm
concerned. Country house is a brilliant pop song, but Roll with it is Oasis'
worst single so far, IMO. It may sound like ver Quo, but it's not as good.
There.
1323.18Of course, we're not taking this seriouslyZUR01::ASHGrahame Ash @RLEThu Aug 17 1995 15:297
Every time I hear Blur I grind a little more surface off my teeth (OK,

"humour".

And 'Definitely Maybe' is pretty good too.

Whilst the press, and ourselves, are going on about how this is the clash of
the titans etc., everyone seems to be forgetting that the UK charts are so
crap, these days, that if some man dressed up as a pineapple releases a CASIO
demo. tune, and sings; "I'm a pineapple, come eat me. dugga dugga dugga" etc.,
then both Blur and Oasis will be knocked out of the top ten before you can say
"Right said Fred".

I notice that Blur have released their single in two parts...the second
part being available this week also. So I guess these double sales
mean they are bound to 'win'.

    Matthew,

What even with the Wildtarts making the Top 40? It was only a
year or so ago when the Wedding Present released a single every month
in a rather fruitful marketing ploy to ensure they made the charts
from Jan - Dec. Perhaps you didn't like them then?

Tim, what was so wunderful about 1987 then?

re .24

No, I said the charts are crap. There are exceptions, and 4 or 5 of the
Weddoes' 12 singles were excellent. My point is that these singles pass pretty
quickly. Music lovers go and buy the single in the first week, radio doesn't
play it, so it disappears. Unfortunately, radio plays the crap songs, and
hence people carry on buying them beyond the first week of release.

The Oasis single, I feel is there weakest yet. Blurs Single I find
insanely catchy esp lines like "He's reading Balzac, Knocking back the
Prozac" and "I'm a professional cynic, But my heart's not in it "
Any other Oasis single would get my vote , but in this case it goes to
    Blur.

Did anyone else hear that ginger Prat on the radio this morning talking
about the mid week chart placings. Apparently, by law, you cannot give
chart placings out, but due to some clever wording (legal dept involved
no doubt) he said if this was Sundays chart Oasis would be #2 to Blur
by about 28,000 sales. Earlier in the week he said that Blur are on a
one to one deal with the record stores (buy one copy get one free)
whereas Oasis are on one to ten.

This is just a marketing war between Sony and EMI (I think thats Blurs
record label owner) and the punters are getting caught up in the hype.
Still it's better than having that DROSS at #1 for another week !!!

I think the only group to rival Blur and Oasis now is the return of
Smokie, with their new member Roy "Chubby" Brown and a re-issue of the
70's classic "Living Next Door to Alice". Hilarious with Chubby's
insertions after the title line "Alice, who the x is Alice" although
on TOTP last night x was replaced with the word bleep.

Blur and Oasis cannot compete against such a classic that is sure
    to go down in history.

If Blur or Oasis's PR and Marketing folks had any idea about what they
were doing, they'd have ensured that the singles/albums/tours were a
respectful distance apart from each other. The majority of people who
buy there records and go to the gigs don't have a lot of money, so why
force them to make a choice ? they'd probably buy output from both, and
pay to see both bands live if they didn't occur at the same time.

There are far too many signed bands out there who have nothing spent on them
by the so called 'marketing' departments of record companies, and many
other who don't get signed at all, while money is wasted trying to
promote one band as being better than another - why not give them all a fair
deal, and let people make their own minds up ?

    All IMHO, of course !

The extra track on the vinyl format of the Oasis album is called
Bonehead's Bank Holiday. I like it. Definate shades of the Beatles
(I think it reminds me of 'I am the Walrus'). There is also a rather
amusing piece at the endd of the track where thee band put on silly
voices and take the p*ss out of the song's lyrics.

Also, for your edification, Paul Weller is credited with providing

Would'nt worry about it. Now that The Big Bad Rod (McFad) has long
departed it is no longer a requirement to cite the influences of
The Fire Engines etc before you're deemed credible or taken seriously.

For what it's worth, both 'The Great Escape' & 'Morning Glory' are
good albums. 'The Great Escape' lacks the classics of 'Parklife' (there
are no 'This is a Low' or 'Girls & Boys' on here) but it also lacks the
chunk of fillers that fill up the second side of 'Parklife'. More
uniformly good, if you know what I mean.

Noel 'Magpie' Gallaghers steal of REM's 'The One I love' for the title
track of 'Whats the story...' is quite funny in that it's almost masked
by all the helicopter noises, but not quite. Actually, he is normally
pretty blatant with his rip-offs and there are plenty here. None the
less, it's well worth the purchase.

IMO neither can surpass 'It's great when your straight.......yeah'.

Finally managed to get my hands on both "The Great Escape" and "What's
    the Story. Morning Glory ?".

IMO, the Oasis album is far superior, and is so much more polished than
Definately Maybe. "The Great Escape" lacks the punch of "Parklife" -
only Country House stands out as truly great song, however anyone who
can get Ken Livingston to "sing" on an album deserves some credit.

Well Blur isn`t my kind of music- I don`t like them, they don`t like
    me, so we are even.
But Oasis fits on my kind of music, like my music fits them.
    Well that`s all folks.

Yep they are at it again. According to this mornings NME, Blur release
'Stereotypes' and Oasis release 'Don't Look Back In Anger' on February
    12.

Will Robson and Jerome rise to the challenge and release their single
on the same day? No probably not.

I haven't heard the Blur song yet, but "Don't Look Back in Anger" is
a cracking song and one of Oasis's best.

    Stratto,
Oasis will win this one easily having just swept the boards at the
Brats. And the song is better.
I think Robson & Jerome would win though in a threeway head to head
as there are so many dimwitted punters in the nations record shops !!!
