1308.0. "Prefab Sprout note ?" by TLSE01::SAAD () Tue Jul 04 1995 20:56

    Hi,

Have any books been published about Prefab Sprout?
Otherwise can someone start a note giving background/influences...
information on this most interesting group and the songs they write ?
    (Lyrics especially)

    Thanks in advance
    William

Dunno, but Tracy Thorn is the spitting image of one of the Bishop's
Stortford FC football hooligans!

...you're half way there William, you've started the note. Perhaps a
good starting point would be 'What you know about them' ?

    Graham

BTW, I haven't seen them on the Web, but they're probably out there
    somewhere....

Lyrical genius;

"Hot dog, jumping frog. Alberkerque"

No apologies for misspelling.

Was that them? I hated that song!

Was it them who released "When Love Breaks Down"? Awful song.

Well, I like Prefab Sprout. I thought that 'Swoon' and 'Steve McQueen'
were very good albums. (Think these were the first 2.)

I must admit that I haven't paid any attention them tho since they
released that very tedious 'Jordon - The Comeback' record.
This must have been '91-'92 ish?

Yes, it was them who released 'When Love Breaks Down'. I think
this is probably their best-known and most successful single.

What did you want to know about them? I don't have a clue what
they're up to now, but I believe they're still together as a band.

and some more, as bits of useless trivia start trickling back into
    my memory....

I think they were orignally signed to the Kitchenware label and
were label-mates with and friends of Martin Stephenson (& the
    Daintees).

Paddy Macaloon (sp?) writes all the songs.

I'm not aware of any Tracey Thorn connection with them at all??!
The woman in Prefab Sprout is called Wendy something-or-other.

that was just my terrible memory, ignore the comment!

I saw Prefab Sprout at Portsmouth around the time of their first album.
It is right up there in the worst gig top 5. They were truly terrible.

I understand the name was from a mis-heard lyric from another (Frank Sinatra?)
song.

That's all I know.

Well, I should sign up as a supporter of the world's best band. Well, they come
from Newcastle so that's good enough for me! Please, a bit of respect, "Steve
McQueen" is actually my favourite album, by anyone. (I think they had to
rename it something like Four Wheels Straight? (On My Wagon?) for the US, as
McQueen's estate got upset).

I've no idea what they've been up to since Jordan - are they really still
going?

Another 'interesting fact' is that most of the albums were produced by Thomas
"Hyperactive" Dolby.

    I have 2 albums :
    - From Langley Park to Memphis
    - Swoon
In my opinion, both are great. In Swoon the lyrics are quite
"strange". Hence my curiosity about influences.

Swwon - what a great record....that and Steve Mcqueen are very much of
their time tho, reminds me of when I was young and used to enjoy
    myself.

Yeah, Swoon's unique. I often wonder if McAloon got a smack for that one and
was told to write 'proper' songs from now on. Nothing they did after that was
as 'different'. Though it wasn't any easier to understand!

I think Swoon is a must for the scratchy old vinyl playlist this
    evening!

I saw Prefab Sprout at Cardiff Uni in '85. I think this must have been
a tour to promote the Steve McQueen lp. I can't recall whether they
were good or bad, but I did have a splendid time and bought Steve
McQueen on the strength of it.
Oddly, one of the few things I remember about this gig was one of
my group pointing out that Wendy Smith didn't shave her arm pits.

So when's the next recording due? It's been 5 years since Jordan:The
Letdown. Saw them on that tour and sometime in 85 at Hammersmith
Palais, the latter being a bit iffy (a very thin sound), the former
much more polished but still lacking. They simply are'nt a live act.

So, without touring commitments, what's the excuse for the wait.
Polishing off the Zorro album? :-)
