1296.0. "On the deck this week....fnar" by CHEFS::GEORGEM (Cannibalise Legalbis) Tue May 16 1995 18:04

At the risk of turning this conf into ::HEAVY_METAL, I thought I'd start this
topic. It may already exist, but because I use the ALL-IN-1 interface, I can't
do a directory of notes. Anyhow, a new topic is what one needs, occasionally.

"On the deck this week" is for you to stick the name of something you've been
listening to rather a lot this week/today/yesterday/whatever. I like to see
what other people are listening to, as it tends to remind me of albums that I
really like, but had forgotten about, or left at the back of my drawer or
whatever.

If this topic already exists, and its duplication really offends you, then feel
free to remove this note, mods.

I'll start with some rather predictable ones in the next note...

The ALL-IN-1 "gpc" thing, not "NOT". "DIR" is some kind of phone book.

Nice to see someone else appreciating Ginge and his fine brand of melodious

'Wasted' - Best Of Volume, Volume 1 (from the people who brought you TEEX 1,2,n
2 CDs and a groovy book, Orbital, Orb, Bjork, Cypress Hill,
Underworld, etc, and my personal fave Mindless Drug Hoover with

'Duke'	- Genesis, err, sorry, but I do actually like this, although Phil
	  Collins is a pillock

'B52s'	- B52s, Watch out for that piranha!

'Seasons In The Abyss'	- Slayer, majestic stuff.

Currently residing in the car (and thus guaranteed at least 10 possible
plays in a week) CD system:

    Poison - Alice Cooper.
Good for a laugh, this one. How does he get away with lyrics such as
"Pull my trigger, it gets bigger, then I'm lots of fun"?

    Deep Forest - Deep Forest.
Bet you can't sing along to those pygmy chants. Been playing this for
    weeks, and I can't.

    Aqualung - Jethro Tull.
    A classic. 'nuff said.

    Deep Purple - Perfect Strangers.
    And aren't they just.

    Mike Oldfield - Crises.
With, you guessed it, Maggie Reilly!

    Sinfonia Antartica - Vaughn-Williams.
Well, it's hot outside and I haven't got aircon in the car.

    Finlandia, Karellia Suite - Sibelius
    Me, romantic? Never.

    1992, The Love Album - Carter U.S.M.
Doh Re Mi Soh Far So Good really.

    Whenever - Aimee Mann
A little angst never did anyone any harm.

    Parklife - Blur.
Well, it's not about your Vorsprung Durch Technic, cutting down on the
    porklife and getting some exercise.

Some dodgy Goth compilation that I've lost the cover for. I wish I
knew who recorded half the tracks on it! But it includes NIN, James
Ray, Killing Joke, and that's about the only ones I know!

Lush - Gala.

Iron Maiden - Killers.

Black Sabbath - Sabotage.

Unlikely as it sounds the Nolans very nearly made a single with
Motorhead. It could have been called "I'm in the mood for Smirnoff"
    I suppose.

I recommend "The Orb, Unplugged" Andy.

The Nolans did record a single with Lemmy and a couple of others
under the name `The Young & Moody Band' (the Moody being Micky of
Whitesnake if I remember correctly) in the early '80s.

    2 CD's for 15.00 last Saturday -

ELP - Tarkus (and you thought you were sad Mikef). Goodness me this
album is a load of nonsense. You're the authority on these
things Balders, what IS it all about?

Err, 'Tarkus', that's the one with a bizarre combination of 1st World
War British Tank and Armadillo on the cover. Right? And glorious
tracks including 'AquaTarkus'? Glorious tosh alright. Been a while
since I last gave this one a spin, so I'll give it a blast tonight and
    get back to you.

If you like, I can probably have a good go at explaining Karn Evil 9
from Brain Salad Surgery. The problem with both these albums (and other
prog rock efforts) is that my head was never in its most lucid state
    when listening to them.

    Let's see, how about

Us - Peter Gabriel. Saw him on TV last night and remembered I had the album,
so decided to have a listen to it. Just as bad as I remember, boring songs,
sounds like it was recorded in a dustbin straight onto somebody's walkman which
they once dropped in the toilet one particularly wasted friday night.

Antics In The Forbidden Zone - Adam and The Ants. Once I'd wiped all the
sweaty thumb prints off it, a great greatest hits album. Brilliant for
annoying the neighbours.

I really can't see the attraction with Peter Gabriel, IMO he's one
of the most terminally boring songwriters in existence. I seem to
remember that I liked `Games Without Frontiers' when I was about 10,
but he's gone constantly downhill in my estimation since then.

I still dig Adam & The Ants though.

Zuma - Neil Young

Wow! "Cortez the Killer". Who needs drugs when you've got music like this!
Sends you onto a different plane (err...sortof metaphorically).

Pulse - Pink Floyd

Not as bad value as some may have you believe. 74 minutes on each CD.

Jam - Little Angels

Nostalgia, I suppose. I still stand by the fact that they made some flippin'
excellent music, though. "Splendin Isolation", "I was not wrong", and "Don't
confuse sex with love" are current favourites.

Well, the score is;

I have Wish you were here, and Division Bell on CD. I have a copy of The Wall.
There are a number of tracks which aren't on these 2 CDs, but I like 'em.
Unfortunately, Pink Floyd tend to put a fair bit of dirge in-between the gems.
As a result, I don't feel the need to spend 27 quid on the Wall, just to listen
to the sublime "Comfortably Numb" (which is better live, frankly). Same goes
for a load of the other tracks. Also, I prefer the way Floyd play their stuff
live, as obviously the production in the 70s was pretty crap.

Effectively, the live albums are "best of..." albums. From what I can gather,
though, there's a lot of track duplication between "Delicate sound..." and
"Pulse". I don't really give a monkeys, personally, cos I haven't got "Delicate
sound...".

Might this be because, perhaps, "Second Coming" was nowhere near as good as
people had hoped, plus it was only their second album. Floyd have been around
for a hell of a lot longer, and there is plenty of stuff for fans to listen to
should they get the urge. This isn't the case with "another band"!

Yes but, PInk Floyd without Roger Waters are a completely different
animal, so in 11 years they've only released 2 studio albums, by my

their third album - thereby becoming more prolific than the 'new' Pink
    Floyd.

Just "hobo-humpin-slobo-babe". How does the album measure up?

Er, dunno! My girlfriend's got the album and a 'single' - "Pay for This"? and
I haven't heard either much. But the album's fascinating - they seem very
different to me (though I've led a pretty sheltered life recently!), and the
quality is consistent throughout the album. Worth listening out for.

Today's spins are:

World Of Noise: a compilation which came free with Q. A few good tracks,
mostly from artists I wouldn't normally notice, Radiohead, Sinead O'Connor,
and Morrisey ("Spring-Heeled Jim" - chilling stuff)

Westbam - bam bam bam (mindless techno)
Page/Plant - No Quarter (the hippy in me struggling to get out)

Listening to a CD sent to me by an old mate who emmigrated to Canada. His band
have released their second CD which is fairly "Hootie and the Blowfish"-ish,
but nevertheless competent.

"Sleepwalker's Union" by Sleepwalker's Union (grammar faithfully preserved)
"Legend" by Bob Marley
"Wonderful" (It isn't) by Adam Ant
"Negative one friends" by Done lying down

Southpaw Grammar - Morrissey (Absolutely Superb, I cannot praise this
album highly enough !! ) There may only be 8 tracks but they are all
blinders. I know that I'll probably take a bit of flak about this but I
don't care, just go out and buy the album. I promise you will not be
    disappointed !!

His n' Hers - Pulp (Cracking stuff. Looking forward to their new album)

Dodgy - Homegrown (I know it probably seems that I'm always listening
to this album, probably because I AM !!)

A spiffingly good song I caught on German TV by a German band(?)
by the name of Selig. Anyone help with the name of the song, the
video has band members, and assorted cats (don't laugh, I'm doing
my best) jumping around against a backdrop of dreary London office
    buildings.

    There,
