1273.0. "Embarrassing Records" by CHEFS::GEORGEM (The west is the best) Wed Feb 01 1995 14:20

Don't know what sort of take up there'll be on this topic, but it's worth a go,
to ressurect this conference.

What are the most embarrassing records/whatever in your collection? What's the
most embarrassing gig you've been to?

Go on....you can tell us....we won't tell anyone.

Try as I can, I can't immediately think of any horrific bloopers in my
collection. I must be such a hep cat that these kind of accidents
don't happen to me.

A friend of mine has got the action man single - 3 and half minutes of
machine gun sounds and small explosions; all the fun and excitement of
your very own battlefield on a 7".

- Here's one: I possess a 7" called the Poppadom (sp?) Song, it even featured
on Blue Peter once, and had a very a very catchy chorus of "oh oh, oh oh,
hot as can be, oh oh, oh oh, and lots of mango chutney please".

I won't bother to go into the long and involved story of how I came by
this gem, but it's a good excuse, honest.

I've got a couple of David Bedford albums. I know there is no excuse, but
it is something I've come to terms with and can now admit to in a (semi-)
public forum.

    Re. a few back.

Bad Manners and all the other English ska bands of the same era are all
of a quality rarely seen these days. The CanCan by Bad Manners is a bit
of a novelty but this doesn't detract from the credibility of the
group. The Can Can is a good record in my opinion, it is still full
of energy and if used at the right point can still get a party
pumping. As a DJ (House/progressive/trance and anything else I feel
like) I wouldn't hesitate to spin the CanCan if the time was right.
I do also have a few records from my early days which I would prefer
not to admit to e.g. The Muppet show album. But my Mum brought these
for me and my sisters when we were very small so they hardly count
    really.

Wasn't David Bedford a sort of Mike Oldfield clone from the late 70s?
Or was he a long distance runner with a beard from the early 70s?...

He worked with Mike Oldfield, but was a bit different...

I'm not sure what his full title was, but he did teach at one of the
London Colleges (Queen Elizabeth?), and recorded some works which were
    interesting, atonal type stuff.

On the subject of embarrasing - I actually own (forgive me) Phil
Collins first solo album. I'm really sorry, I was young and
    impressionable.

Well I don't have any embarassing records, but a lot people
in the Netherlands do. Apparently Father Abraham and the Smurfs
is number 1 there at the moment with "No Limits".

David Bedford's stuff was quite melodic ! Some was used on the BBC at
Xmas time for their jingles between programs. I do confess to owning a
couple of his albums, and as for T'Pau, I've been collecting all their
stuff recently, just one more album to go !! :-)

Melodic! Put your analyst on danger money mate, coz he/she's gonna need it.
Have you never heard the awesome musical extravaganza that is 'Stars End' or
the masterpiece of 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'? I think not. And we
mustn't forget 'Rigel 9' or 'White Horses, Whales and Places in Devon'. Both
modern musical wonders. Superb, that's what David Bedfords music is. Truly
superb. I can't wait to get home and play 'Phaecian Games'. Its brilliant.
Honest. No, don't put the straight-jacket on me. I'll come quietly.

To further confess to serious sadness, I once bought Mike Oldfield's
Moonlight Shadow 9" single purely for the b-side. Just for completeness
you understand, no one would really want to listen to "Rite of Man", would
they...

Random reply about Smurfs.

The Smurfs are a good theme for generic drinking game (like where you
watch something on video and every time the characters do or say something
particular, you have to take a drink, e.g. Capt Picard says "Make it so"
or violence breaks out in The Sweeney)

Every time one of them says "Papa Smurf", you have to take a drink.

One word of warning, under no circumstances should you try this with the
episode where Papa Smurf gets lost in the forest.

Guy

p.s. "Papa Smurf? Papa Smurf? Where are you Papa Smurf?"

On the subject of our little chums from Holland, I am the proud owner
of a Smurf Album and let me tell you, that it is advisable to play the
drinking game before listening to this grand piece of vinyl. If there
is ever a world shortage of vinyl and they start recalling all the
L.P.'s they'll have a hell of a fight on their hands.

Adam and the Ants, Kings of the Wild Frontier LP.

Thinking back, I didn't even like it when I bought it, but had just
started playing drums and at that time they had (and still do when live
according to recent R1 interview) 2 drummers.
