1269.0. "GLASTONBURY '95" by WOTVAX::STONEG (Temperature Drop in Downtime Winterland....) Thu Jan 05 1995 15:29

Well, it's that time of year again, dust off the old afghan, dig out the
John Lennon specs and jesus sandals....

So who do we think is playing this year ?

o Once again The Grateful Dead are rumoured - a strong possibility given
it's the 25th anniversary this year and they did appear a long time back.

o Hawkwind - again one of bands playing in the early daze - if they're
not on the main stage, I'd expect to see them around somewhere.

o Stone Roses ? - got this one from the NME - I'd love to see them
there, and for me they've got a lot more credibility than another
favourite - OASIS - and they'll still be togetha %^)

o Pet Shop Boys ! - I might be forced to burn my ticket if this
       happens !

o	Neil Young - would be great, but he'll need to release a new album
first, if he sticks to his guns and refuse to play any of 'Sleeps
        with Angels' live...

....Anyone else got any ideas ?

    ....does anybody care ?

    ....is anybody going ??

BTW - Neil Young has already played stuff from Sleeps with Angels live
    - he did say he wouldnt play 'hey hey' again, but he did at the Bridge
    benefit shows. I think.

Yeah - finance and house permitting (just brought a white elephant),
I'll be going. I'm worried that these could be the last days of the
festivals, and opportunities to walk around in silly hats may be
    slipping away...

Mike, bring the White Elephant with you %^) someone (dressed in Orange,
and with a shaved head I believe) turned up at the gate last year with

My friend who works at the festival each year got his 'call up' papers
at the w/e (it's on for the 23/24/25 June, for those who didn't know).
The letter he got says Michael Eavis has been quite ill in the last few
months, but it's still on... no mention of bands (as usual) and no
details yet of ticket/security arrangements or capacity. Mike (the
friend) thinks they'll stick with same the style of tix as the last two
years, although the Police want better control of passouts - their
latest idea is to photograph each person needing a passout against a
date/time background ! who's gonna pay for that I wonder ? and what
happens if you go back to a different gate ?

No news yet on the stage either, they were supposed to be building a
new Pyramid, but I'm sure there'd have been pictures of it by now if it
    was ready....

1269.8We have contactSUBURB::SHELTONJThu Jan 26 1995 19:083
If anyone has an address or telephone number for the organisers
could they post it here, as I may be interested in helping out
    at the fest. this year.
1269.9more on Monday...WOTVAX::STONEGTemperature Drop in Downtime Winterland....Fri Jan 27 1995 16:0823

most of the 'helping out' is organised via CND/Greenpeace. I have a
friend who works at the festival every year on Communications, -
coordinating staff on Gates, etc - He got notification a few weeks
back, asking him to confirm availablity and giving dates for meetings
    etc.

I'll see him this evening, so if you like I'll finds out who you need
to get in touch with - you may neded to be a member of CND/GreenPeace
    tho.

Alternatively, you can get in as a litter picka - I think entry is
free, melas and a field to camp in are provided, and you get a rota to
work to which basically means filling x bin-liners then the rest of the
time is your own - definitely recommended if money is short.

The confusion over the CND/GreenPeace thing, is because it always used
to be CND but GreenPeace seemed to take over the organisational aspects
    a couple of years back.

    Hope this helps,

    Graham
1269.10Volunteer update....WOTVAX::STONEGTemperature Drop in Downtime Winterland....Mon Jan 30 1995 18:1411

I asked my friend about helping out - He's not an authority on this,
but he has been doing it for a number of years - he says your best bet,
would be to approach your local OXFAM organisation...

They use OXFAM volunteers because they're used to doing unpaid work,
and can generally be trusted. If there are any problems then there is
obviously some come-back via the local OXFAM organisation.

Ordered our tix today, the recorded message is a bit of a nuisance but
    otherwise okay.

On the Band front, it'll be interesting to see the Ozrics on the main
stage, I'm used to seeing them in small venues (like big tents) with
just a couple of hundred people !

We intend to be in Glastonbury for breakfast on the Wednesday, then
hopefully get one of the site landrovers to tow our trailer in for us -
it beats dragging it the last half mile or so...

To mark the 25th anniv, we're thinking of replacing our flag poles with
a helium balloon this year - the flags and lights can be hung of the
ropes holing it down instead - and Bugsy and Dunc are still trying to
sort out a Laser and Generator to take with us.

I still haven't heard how many tickets there are this year, does anyone

This year we are going to be driving down to Glastonbury for the first
time. At the moment we are looking at two options. One is to drive down
on the Wednesday night and arrive at the site at around 8 on Thursday morning.
The other option is to leave early Thursday morning and arrive at the site
around 5 on Thursday afternoon. What I would like to know is what sort of delays
can we expect if we arrive at these times.

Last year we flew down to Birmingham and got a lift to Glastonbury. We arrived
at the site at around 11 PM then spent about 4 hours in a traffic jam.

Cheers
Allan

I strongly urge you to go on Wednesday evening because on Thursday
the traffic becomes horrendous (not to mention the smell) If you go
on Wednesday there is much less of a trek to the campsite from the car
    park.
1269.40seconded...WOTVAX::STONEGTemperature Drop in Downtime Winterland....Wed Jun 14 1995 13:2919

Definitely Wednesday night - the earlier the better. We're usually
there from breakfast time on Wednesday, by Thursday lunchtime the place
is really beginning to fill up.

How many of you are going anyway ? we'll be in the field between the NME
stage and the Jazz stage (around 2h,3.5v on the Glastonbury Web Page
Map) - roughly 50-100yds off the railway track - come and look us up if
you like, although how much sense you get out of us will depend on how
late you leave it %^). There should be a couple of aircraft type lights,
a yin&yang type flag and SYF flag on a pole above our camp, Mike Fiddler
will probably be with us too.

    Graham

BTW, make sure you arrive from Glastonbury, is you trty to drive in
from the other side you usually get sent down a one-way system of
single track roads & lanes which is much slower.

I'm trotting along on thursday morning, and hopefully approaching from
the south, it shouldnt be too horrible then. Of course, the earlier

Hmmm. Worst Glastonbury queuing experience anyone? 1987 for us. Started
in a country lane at 9:45 on the Thursday evening and ended up in a
muddy field at 7:00 next morning. Last year was okay, about 3 hours on
Thursday afternoon and a band called the French Funk Federation were
queuing behind our car. A groovily attired mob you could say.

I'm not going this year and I'm now suffering sever bouts of angst

Thanks for the traveling info. This year there are nine of us going
down. We normaly camp up from the circus tent in one of the fields with
the pylons right at the fence. Been there for the last 3 years and
havent had anything nicked so will probably go there again. Our tents
are non descript bluey greeney things so I doubt youll find us although
we always seem to end up in the Krishna tent at around 2 am for some
    serious Hari Ramma.

Mike, just got your mail but we can't get e-mail out of the building
at the moment, so I thought I'd reply here instead as most of it's
    relevant....

I take my camera every year, it's safe enough as long as you don't let
it out of your sight ! and the case is always handy for carrying things
    in....

We'll have a few small stoves between us for a brew, but probably
nothing more elaborate than that - the food stalls, cafe's etc start
opening from Wednesday onwards so you won't starve, just bring your
favourite tea or coffe and a mug - actually, I suppose 'Cup-a-Soup'
would be more appropriate given the Wolver'ampton connection %^)

As far as parking goes, I'm not sure you'll get much choice, I think
you just get diverted all over Somerset until you arrive in the field
they're currently using - I do remember 5 or 6 years ago that the car
parks to the East were a long way off, we had a twenty minute walk to
    the gate !

Maureen hasn't mentioned anything yet about the CAD system, I may

I heard at the w/e that Pulp have been confirmed as replacements for
the Stone Roses on Saturday, and contrary to earlier rumours (probably
started by me !) The Cure will be playing.

Were the organised gangs of thieves at work this year? Silly question.
Or should I say is Eavis doing anything apparent in trying to curb
this problem? More steward presence per camping area would'nt be a
bad idea without wanting the whole thing to become too officiated.

1269.72UBOHUB::FIDDLER_MThe sense of being dulls my mindTue Jun 27 1995 16:356
I imagine there was a lot of thieving, although I didnt come across
anything directly. There were quite a few stewards wandering through
the camping areas at odd times...but as I'm sure you know, its a
massive job to 'police' the campsites.

Without going over the top on security, I think they do as much as they
can. There are lock-ups for people with valuables, and there are a lot
of security staff walking around who can be called on if needed, the
big problem is that tents are easy to get into - whether you use the
door or not. Apart from a half bottle of Jack Daniels which was lifted
from someones pocket, our group didn't have anything nicked apart from
a lot of wood which we'd spent a couple of hours collecting.

Two or three security guards wandered through our camp at about 2am one
morning with a few unhappy campers, they seemed to be going to look at
someones tent - presumably because something had been stolen. We also
found a small rucksack and a few clothes scattered around one morning,
as though someone had thrown them away because they weren't worth
anything having nicked them from a tent.

I've just read the Festival Review I bought for Mike yesterday morning,
and in the middle is a picture of the site. It doesn't cover all of it
(you can see our camp on it thanks to an 18' x 24' tarp we used as
a shelter) but it gives an idea of how big the whole thinge is - perhaps
Mike could scan it and then those of you who haven't been could see the
bits they don't show on the telly.

1269.78WOTVAX::STONEGTemperature Drop in Downtime Winterland....Wed Jun 28 1995 19:4018

Banco de Gaia were the best of the festival for me, with Nik Turner on
the Jazz stage and John Otway in the Cabaret Tent also worthy of mention
    - his act is predictable (I see it every year) but it's guaranteed quality.

Some geezer on the Jazz stage was 'worst of festival' if there is such
a thing, he was ranting on about changing the world and this and that
on Friday afternoon - which is fair enough, each to their own and all
that - but for some reason they let him have another go on Saturday ! I
wouldn't have minded too much except that we could hear everything on
the Jazz stage from our camp, and when we weren't at the camp or
watching other bands we were at 'Don's Bar' - and yes, you've guessed
it this is in the Jazz field, almost spoiled me Guinness he did...

    Graham.

BTW, I'm not cricising what he was rapping/ranting about, just that he
    wasn't very good at it.
