1240.0. "Whigfield - 'Quack-Quack'-Oops! " by COMICS::MACLEAN (A Pure Dear in a Wicked World) Tue Sep 13 1994 13:34

Picture the scene ....A Dominican Republic nightclub ...just after midnight
....The rum is flowing and things are starting to hot up ..... the local
merengue music beats loudly in the background , interspersed with rave and
rock ....

The next track starts ,the dance floor fills all of a sudden ...we look on
in utter amazement while the horrific 'Quack-Quack-Quack' disco-beat lures
the throng into a frenzied set dance .Fortunately it's in Spanish with only
an English chorous so at least we are spared the trauma that it may be
British and not euro-cr*p.

This is the very song that is now the UK #1 ... Whigfield - 'Saturday Night'

This is the music that sad Christmas parties and alcohol-soaked 'but should
know better' summer hol.s are based on ......

Now , of course this is only one of a genre of set dances to music

Take it away Eric the orchestra leader ........

Sandie.../

(PS: It was SOOOOOOOOOOO dreadful I asked a friend to bring back a copy for
my other 1/2 from Holland as a wind-up :-} )

Absolute and utter crap. If you know anyone in Britain who bought this,
do them and us a favour and shoot them!

    Bring back Wet Wet Wet.

The interesting thing about this, is that WWW sold 60% MORE last week
than previous weeks and it still failed to retain the No.1 slot. It's
very difficult to imagine that such high sales could be legitmately
exceeded by such a *questionable???* single. I would have thought Kylie
or LVD + Maria Carey could have pulled it off, but NOT Whigfield.

You know the answer, go out and *mass-buy* the WWW single ;-)

All I can say is, perhaps the people who were wishing for the Wets
downfall now appreciate what a good record it actually was.

You wouldn`t have liked the Mark Radclif (sp?) show on Radio One last
night then - he was quite enjoying the fact that WWW had been knocked of
the Number One spot - and was even happier that it had been by Whigfield !
    :)

Plus of course there were all his usual comments about the Spin
    Doctors ! :)

However I hasten to add he wasn`t implying in any way that the
Whigfield song was good ! :)

I think this is all part of the "Holiday Record" syndrome. Remember the
dodgy holidays abroad of your youth ? Y'know, the one where you were
so drunk that you actually thought that 'Tarzan Boy' by Baltimora was a
great song ? Remember how you rushed out to buy it when you got back
home to remind yourself of how great a holiday you just had ?

This Whigfield character is just 1994's answer to Baltimora, Opus (Life
is Life nah nah nah nah-nah), etc. One hit wonder, then back to
    selling carpets of whatever.

    Hopefully.

This was one of 2 Wigfield singles that were out in Spain this summer..
No Doubt her Follow up single to this will be "Another Day" Which
sounds almost the same but without the Da Da Da De Do De Do bit...!!

She comes from Denmark and not Britain as mentioned in the base note
so we can safely call it Euro_Crap

Have you heard the show recently - there was this item on the news
about a week ago - about some supermarket selling beans for eight pence
or something like that.... Ever since then he has been asking all his
quests whether they have ever seen a tin being sold that cheap ! - they
will be in the middle of a really serious conversation about something
    - and suddenly this question will be dropped in ! :)

Also his sarcastic comments about the Spin-Doctors (and also William
Shatners record (which he played last week)) are brilliant ! :)

    Yes I'm a devotee of Mark,Mark and little Mark  :-}

The William Shatner track was pretty awful ...the amusing
bit was that WS actually thought it was a real gem !...mind
you compared to Whigfield I'm willing to think again !!

I was surprised to hear a song by Leonard Nimoy on that same show - it
was quite fun to hear - but I won`t be adding it to my record
collection ! :) - It was going on about how illogical everything is !:)
    - typical :)

I heard that William Shatner released that album to try and change his
image of being nothing but a star-ship captain - but that the first
thing you hear on the album is the Enterprise shooting past - or the
Star Trek theme tune... hmmmm - that is illogical ! :)

    Nick.

p.s. I wonder what Mr Spock would say about Whigfield getting to the No
    1 spot !

It must be the beer. I found the song strangely appealing on
Saturday night; but then I was p*ssed out of my tree. Might have to go
    and buy it!

The deed is done; I have my very own copy of this in my anorak pocket
(next to the well-thumbed copy of Puffins' Guide to Trainspotting).

I heard the trance mix on the radio last night and that convinced me
that I should buy it. It's less naueous than the radio version.

According to TOTP2 Whigfield is being sued by The Equals.
Apparently "Saturday Night" bears a very close resemblance to
their 1969 hit "Rub A Dub Dub".

I guess there must be a very large sum of money involved for
        them to admit to this.

        Ian.
1240.18YUPPY::ASHLEYSMITHMon Nov 21 1994 16:207
"Rub a Dub Dub" eh? Sounds like a musical masterpiece doesn't it. I
always thought that was cockernee rhyming slang for "off down the pub"?
Well I s'pose they will be if they prove their case in court.

I wonder if they have a natty little dance we can do that as well.

Anyone heard the new Whigfield ditty?

Sounds like she's been inhaling quite a lot of helium, and reminds me
quite a bit of Summertime by Mungo Jerry! Same sort of melody to the
    lyrics (if that makes sense!).

Maybe she ought to get a season ticket for the court?

    Steve.

Parts of the Whigfield song reminded me very much of an old song, but I
can't remember what it's called. I don't think it's the same one as the
one she's being sued about. So maybe she, or the people behind her,
    plagiarised several songs.

    Rod
1240.23ARRODS::WHITEHEADJShades of ScarlettTue Nov 29 1994 00:204
I wouldn't admit to Whigfield having plagiarised one of my songs.
Oh the shame would be too much to bear.
