1216.0. "WINDOWS FILES?" by UPROAR::PLOWMAND (everything you know is wrong) Tue May 24 1994 19:03

Does anybody have any interesting BMP (Bitmap files) for PC use? I
copied those .jpg files over but of course they're pretty useless to me
and I haven't got anything that will convert them.

I was looking for something to use as my Windows Desktop...?

    Thanks for any pointers.

    Cheers,

    Debs.

There's a piece of shareware that will convert to/from many file
formats, including .jpg, called Paint Shop Pro. You can find it
on the net at:

NSIC00::PSQ:[PUBLIC.SOURCES.WIN-PUBLIC]PAINTS20.ZIP

It's a zip file so first you have to unpack it, then you have to
run a setup program to install it on your pc. It's discussed in
note 2171 of MORTAL::IBMPC_SHAREWARE

This could open up many sources for your pc. I've found that you
can even use it to see VMS ddif bitmaps. First you have to use the
CDA Converter on VMS to turn the ddif file into a tif file, and
then you can use Paint Shop Pro to read the tif file. Once you've
got it into PSP, you can save to any of the available formats.

    Wow, that worked briliantly!

Those JPG files are great, especially the Bjork one. Except I'm not a
massive Bjork fan, so don't particularly want a photo of her on my
desktop.. any more music pics out there? Can anyone point me to a
    directory?

    Thanks again,

    Debs.

Glad to be of help. Dunno where you can find music pics tho'.
1216.5WELSWS::HEDLEYLager Lout on the Info HighwayWed May 25 1994 19:178
You can get various music pics from cs.uwp.edu, in the directory
/pub/music/pictures (I think), but you'll need to use FTP. You
can FTP to nodes outside digital if you FTP to crl.dec.com on
port 1555, and follow the instructions. The only problem is that
access can be a bit restricted.
Cheers,

Chris.

So I type FTP from the $ prompt and get an FTP> prompt.
Then I type connect crl.dec.com and I get

    220 crl.dec.com FTP server (Version 5.94 Fri Apr 15 10:11:06 EDT 1994)
    ready.
    Connected to crl.dec.com.
    Name (crl.dec.com:gilliland):

Then whatever I type (and I'm not sure what to type) I get

331 Password required for (whatever I've typed)
    Password:

    What do I do next?

    Phil Gill.

P.S. Show sym FTP gives FTP == "$UCX$FTP/ULTRIX"

1216.7WELSWS::HEDLEYLager Lout on the Info HighwayThu May 26 1994 15:3517
when you go into FTP, type `con crl.dec.com 1555'; the number at the
end is important, it lets you go outside DEC. When it asks you for
a username, type `ftp@cs.uwp.edu', which will log you into cs.uwp.edu
with the ID `ftp', which is the norm for anonymous file access. It may
tell you its busy, and to go away and try later, so early mornings are
probably your best bet. If it does let you in, it'll want to know
your full internet address, which you enter in place of the password
(ie user_name@vms_node.enet.dec.com), which won't be displayed as you
type it.

Once in, you use CD to find your way around, DIR lists directories and
GET grabs files. For images, you'll need to enter the BINARY command
otherwise the file will be corrupted when you retrieve it. It stays in
binary mode until you tell it otherwise (use the ASCII command).
Cheers,

Chris.

Chris, you are very helpful. I can't currently connect as there are too
many users on the system, but I have at least advanced further than I
have managed to get before. Incidentally, the first system I tried
accessing from (WARFUT) gave the message

%UCX-E-FTP_HSTINF, Failed to get host information for
    crl.dec.com" "1555 from database

    -RMS-E-RNF, record not found

The other system I use (SHAWBY) works fine. Any idea why this is? Also,
is this an Internet node or what?

not sure, I'm a bit rusty on VMS related issues.

Yes, the cs.uwp.edu is an internet node (University of Wisconsin I think);
I'll post the list of other nodes with music-related things on them next
time I see it...

*** rec.music.info - List of Internet Musical FTP Sites ***

This fortnightly posted list of ftp sites is maintained by the current
rec.music.info moderator, Leo Breebaart, who can be reached at
rec-music-info@cp.tn.tudelft.nl.

All comments, updates, new additions, etc. are more than welcome -- I rely
entirely on reader feedback to keep this list up-to-date.

If you do not know what ftp is or how to use it, check out the introductory
articles found in news.announce.newusers and news.answers, or ask somebody
more experienced to help you.

By the way: many periodic or FAQ articles, including this one, are
available for anonymous ftp on the archive site rtfm.mit.edu
in the directory pub/usenet/news.answers. The name under which a FAQ is
archived appears is the one that appears in the 'Archive-name' line at the
top of the article. The FAQ you are now reading is archived as
music/rec-music-info/ftp-sites.

If you can't do or don't know about ftp: there's also a mail server on that
machine. Just send a e-mail message to mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu
containing the word "help" in the body of the message.

1216.11Questions, questionsWOTVAX::GILLILANDPNot very Tuna-friendlyThu May 26 1994 21:3731
Getting the hang of it now, but a couple more questions.

    1) If I don't have the node number available, how do I know what the
correct address is? e.g. From your list I have no problem with

ftp@129.186.150.150, but if I try ftp@iastate.edu (the same node)
    	I get:

    	530 Cannot connect: Connection refused

If I try ftp@cs.iastate.edu (as in your ftp@cs.uwp.edu example) I get

    	530 hostname unknown.

So how do I know what should come before the node name?

    2) Do I have to GET an ascii file from a node to read it? (If it were
an ascii file on a VAX, I could of course just TYPE it to my screen
    without having to copy).

And finally Chris, so I can stop hassling you, is there any
documentation I can get hold of that explains all of this further?

Once again, thanks for your help.

    Phil Gill.

P.S. Moderator, I will take this offline if you wish, but I have kept
it here as I expect there may be a few other people that are
    benefitting from Chris's help.

crl.dec.com should be able to figure out the internet address itself;
the problem you're getting is because of some inconsistencies in the
list (I just checked, and iastate.edu has a different address to the
one shown...) Any unreachable nodes are probably due to changes at
the local computer centre, which will (hopefully!) eventually be reflected
in updates to the list, which I will try to remember to post here
periodically.

Unfortunately, you do have to GET a document before you can view
it, which is a bit of a pain...

I don't really know of VMS documentation, but I can mail you a copy of
the Unix FTP manual page, which should be pretty much the same (I don't
think I should post that in here!)
Cheers,

Chris.

Thanks Chris, the type of documentation I was after was more
Internet-related. I have since managed to FTP a load of it from various
sites. Incidentally, within that documenation I found that if you do
GET filename tt, it allows you to read the file without copying it
    (this is on a VAX).

    Hi,
I've been reading through these notes and I'm interested in
INTERNET. Could you please mail me a copy of the UNIX FTP manual as
well. I don't know much about the whole thing so any help would be
gratefully received. I'm based in South Queensferry,Scotland.

1216.15New groups?WOTVAX::GILLILANDPNot very Tuna-friendlyWed Jun 01 1994 19:5911
One more question Chris. News groups. What are they? To add a bit of
relevance, 48.214 in the MUSIC conference gives the Pink Floyd tour
dates as posted in Article 109 of alt.music.pink-floyd.

What is alt.music.pink-floyd? Is it a mailing list, a "conference" or
what? In the rest of that note there are some clues as to where it came
from (doc.ic.ac.uk). I've had a good rummage round that site
(particularly the USENET directory) - lots of interesting stuff but no
sign of the tour information. Am I barking up the wrong tree here?

newsgroups are not dissimilar to VAX notes, except that they are often
unmoderated, and therefore rely on their correspondants to prevent them
from falling into complete anarchy. To access a newsgroup you need to
find a newsreader, ie VNEWS for VMS (nasty) or TIN, TRN or NN for UNIX
(groovy), and a server (in GB this would be either DECUK or
vodka.wlo.dec.com). For more details of newsreaders, mail me offline
so we don't clog this thing up too much with technicalities!

The newsgroups of interest to music fans are:
	rec.music.misc - general discussion about (mostly) rock/pop
	alt.music.alternative - discussion about alternative/indie
bands, has a lot of write only noters
alt.music.progressive - progressive music discussion, mostly
		Yes, Crimson, Tull, etc
rec.music.gaffa - allegedly progressive discussion, but mostly
		Kate Bush & Tori Amos
rec.music.info (moderated) - discographies, reviews, concert info
alt.gothic - discussion about Sisters, Nephs (and vampires, for the
		saddoes).
to name but a few. There's loads of other groups to discuss more specific
subjects like Grateful Dead, Enya, Deep Purple, Billy Joel, computer music,
journalism, karaoke, etc,etc,etc.

A final note; note numbers in Usenet News are completely random, so don't
use them as a referance; and you have to be quick if you want to catch
up on a group as they're normally aged off after around a week.

re .14,

I'll mail you a copy of the FTP page when I can figure out a sensible way
of converting it to a readable format! (Previous attempts were a dismal
failure...)

Thanks Chris for the mail you sent me.....the FTP manual etc. It
gave me some idea of what everything means!!!
Does anyone know how I can download information eg lyrics, into my
directory so I can print them out or read them?
    	All answers gratefully received. Thanks.

Once you connect and go to the appropriate directory doesn't "get filename"
work?

Rod, if you want some help in getting going, mail me offline and I'll
pass on the benefit of my recent experience in getting going on this
(and Chris Hedley's of course :-)).
