1214.0. "OASIS" by YUPPY::ASHLEYSMITH (Lara nicked my bat) Thu Apr 21 1994 17:11

Currently being touted by the music press as the Band most likely
to succeed at the moment. The track 'Cigarettes and Alcohol' was
included on a tape NME gave away recently and it is rather good. The
track includes riffs completely stolen from T-Rex's 'Get it on' and
'Telegram Sam' but then thats no bad thing.

Current single 'Supersonic' is right at the top of the indie charts
(recently performed on the Word, I think) and is a different sound
to the T-Rextasy that is 'Cigarettes..'. Looking forward to the Album.

Hmm..good track on the freebie tape with the latest Select (worth
getting this tape). They played in Stoke recently, but I didn't go see
'em (I'm too old). Didn't they have a live set on Sound City the
    other week also?

I have a tape from Select that's called "secret trax" or something
like that - has a number of good trax - inc. Credit To The
Nation,Renegade Soundwave,Bjork and an excellent track by Danny Reed
which is Reggae - there's another couple of others that I can't
    remember at this early hour.

I've heard some of the lp on the radio - they are good if you like
basic rock'n'roll driven by loud rhythm guitar (nowt wrong with that in
my book). They certainly seem to have the right sound/feel and
arrogance to go a long way ("We are the new Beatles" etc.), and apparently
their gigs are near riotous things. I'd say go and see them.

One track I've heard, 'Slide Away', could well become a classic of our
times, it has that feeling of simultaneously being almost out of
control, and really reaching for something deep and very affecting. Or
    something.

    Bob

p.s. continuing on the Manchester band theme for a moment, and to echo
what someone said in the music press last week - I've just dragged out
my copy of the Stone Roses lp for the first time in about three years,
and if the follow up is going to be half as good as the first one, I don't
mind waiting a bit longer for it.

One of those pesky Gallagher boys has apparently been arrested in
Germany, or somewhere, for nicking a packet of razor blades from a
supermarket. He was fined the extortionate amount of : 35 quid.

I'd heard recently that the IoW festival had been cancelled due to some
wrangling with the council or National Trust or summat.

Any truth in these reports?

Last I heard was that the council had turned down the application on the
grounds of safety. The site was split by a major (for the IoW) road, and was
very close to cliffs. So, no IoW Festival

Latest news is that the drummer, Tony McCarroll, has quit the band .
His last appearance was TOTP last week, and his replacement has already
been named as Alan White, 22, who is a Charlton Athletic (who are gonna
get whupped by Reading on Sunday !!! ) supporter. Apparently he has
been in the studio with the band working on 3 new songs, and everything
    is just greeaattt !!!

According to this mornings NME, the second album will be out in
September. As for the B-Sides etc lp, they make no mention of this so
it could have been an invention of the jourbalist who interviewed them

According to yesterdays Melody Maker, Oasis are re-releasing their
singles in a "buy 3 for a tenner" deal. Can't remember off-hand whether
it was in one chain store or whether it was a general release deal. Of
course, this story could be as accurate as the NME lp story...

I think it depends on the band, The Rolling Stones palyed outside at
Trentham in the early 70's, so did Pink Floyd - they had some sort of
Octopus contraption in the lake I think, and played on a floating
stage, at least this is what I've been told - smaller bands, and yer
forthightly Computer jumble are usually inside.

I'm pretty sure Trentham is smaller (inside) than the Viccie Hall, but
it's obvioulsy bigger than The Wheatsheaf, so either the promoters is
being pretty precise with his sizing or there's some political reason
why they haven't booked the Viccie Hall.

The Real People were never as Oasisish as they are now, don't you think
the Real People sound more like Oasis than the Beatles anyway. All of
these bands are about fifth generation Beatles copyists now anyway.

Klaatu ! I remember them, all those rumours about the Beatles reforming
as a new band, not wanting folks to find out who they really were...
turned out to be Klaatu cashing in on peoples eagerness to believe the
    Beatles really would reform...

ELO & Oasis:- I'd agree that ELO don't sound like Oasis - far to
polished and orchestrated for that - but the orchestration that Oasis
have 'borrowed' from The Beatles is the same stuff that ELO 'borrowed'.

So can Oasis survive the latest chapter?? Has Liam really got
larangytis or can he just not be arsed anymore?? Have they blown in in
the US ?? Do they care?? Can Noel make it on his own?? These
questions and more will be answered soon.

What will Liam do though if Noel goes down a storm in the states, where
can he play his tamborine in the future??

The news report I heard this morning said that Liam couldn't be
bothered to go to the States as he was going house-hunting with Patsy
    Kensit.

Its interesting stuff, but it will all blow over. Lets be honest - if
you had to make a choice between several weeks on a cramped tour bus
with a bunch of sweaty blokes, or hanging out with Patsy Kensit, what
    would you choose?

Liam will find his house, take some Dequacaine and fly to the states,
make up with Our Kid and all will be well. Good comment about Yanks
yesterday though!! Re the choice between PK and the sweaty tourbus - I
know which I would go for, just pass me some deodorant and some lager!!!!

Call me odd but given the choice it would have to be the tourbus over
PK (actually I just wonder what Andrea looks like lagered up!!!)

RE Largered up: Absolutely awful, but who cares at that stage.

I see Liam is off to the US of A and all is well. What a top job that
would be, chief hanger on with Oasis. Maybe I should put it down in my
career plan- could even have a lager with Robbie W.
