1151.0. "British Psychedelic (1960s)" by PSYLO::WILSON (Peter Pumpkinhead) Wed Jun 02 1993 23:06

I've been trading tapes with a German fellow, and he sent me a tape
a while back called 'The British Psychedelic Trip.' I guess he taped
this from a two or three record set on the See For Miles label.

Anyway, there's some great stuff on here; too bad I can't remember the
names of the bands - only the songs:

    Flossy Fillet
    Iceman Comes
    Glass House Green, Splinter Red
My White Bicycle (I do know that 'Tomorrow' did this)
    Your Sweet Dose
    The Paper Chase
    My Father's Name Was Dad
    Romeo and Juliet

I'm wondering if this set, or one like it, is available? Is there a
good CD comp. of the lesser known British psychedelic songs available?

    Thanks,

There's a compilation of sixties psychadaelia on the Charly label, but
I don't recall the title. I remember hearing it at a friend's house and
it seemed very much British-oriented rather than American. I recall
that the Bubble Puppy were one of the bands featured, but the rest
    escapes me I'm afraid.

Anyway, I've got a 1989 Charly catalogue at home so I'll have a look
    there.

I recently bought a 4-tape set for a tenner called 'The Psychedelic
Years'. This consists of five sides of American psychedelia/garage/
proto-metal etc, and three sides of more poppy/whimsical british stuff
from the '66-'69 period, including such magical toons as Kippington
Lodge's 'Shy Boy' (an early Nick Lowe group), a band called Apostolic
Intervention (???, obviously on drugs), plus a few 'hits' of the era,
such as 'My White Bicycle', the mighty 'Fire' by Arthur Brown, etc.

There are about 50 tracks on this compilation, probably about 40 are
worth hearing. The obvious dross is stuff like 'In-a-gadda-da-vida'
(Iron Butterfly), fortunately included here in the single version, as
opposed to the 17-minute lp version, and 'You Keep Me Hanging On',
an absolute butchering of a Motown Classic by Vanilla Fudge. Slowing
something down to half it's original tempo does not make 'heavy' music.

all in all, though, a good ten quidsworth

Yeah, I've got that Vanilla Fudge Motown cover on a different
    compilation ("The Age of Atlantic")...criminal!

It's too bad they were'nt more creative and included something other
than "In-A-Gadda" by Iron Butterfly; that band wrote good some good
tunes. I remember the "Ball" LP as being worth a listen.

Still, I'd like to find that original track line-up mentioned in .0 on
CD. But keep the suggestions coming!

The "British Psychedelic Trip" is available on CD. Two volumes have
been available
for a couple of years now. I think a 3rd volume has recently become
available. They
are UK CDs. I have come across them in the USA ('tis where I am.)
