1099.0. "Belly" by WELCLU::GREENB (Lovers of Today) Tue Jan 05 1993 19:18

You see, the reason I'm asking these questions is because I *KNOW* I'll
get funny looks in Price for not enquiring about Phil Collins or the
Shamen or whoever, so you are my last hope.

What about 'Belly', then? Again, on the evidence of a couple of songs I
stumbled across on the radio, a fine group (was one of them called
    'Gepetto', perhaps?)

Who are they? Are they hip? Have they records out?? I don't suppose
they are that hip if they are getting on the radio during the day, but
I don't care, and they are at least a lot lot better than Shakespear's
    S*dd*ng Sister.

Belly was on DLT last weekend: could have been an album track knowing him, but
yes, they are on daytime radio.

Aren't Belly a spin-off from the Throwing Muses or the Pixies or something
like that? There is some connection I believe. Piers L may be up on this.

As an earlier reply stated, Belly is a Throwing Muses offshoot.
Kristin Hersh stayed with the Muses, Tanya Donnelly started up Belly.

I brought the EP which has "Dusted" on it and its brilliant.

The vocals are a bit like Lush and the music is a little heavier than
Lush, not the kind of swirly guitar noises...

    IMO

I've heard "Feed the Tree", is the rest of the album as good?
The female singer, Tanya ?, sounds great, her vocal inflections sound
very similar to Country Western singer Kelly Willis.

Heard Feed the Tree last night for the first time and thought it was
quite quite delicious. Haven't heard anything else except the other
    (one of the other?) singles.

Well, I couldn't wait for the album so I bought the single anyway. Very
    tasty.

Also picked up the Gang of Four compilation "History of the Twentieth
Century" (the longest CD I've ever seen at 77'11") and the Au Pairs
"Playing With a Different Sex + 8 tracks" compilation. Both brilliant.

I heard a radio interview with Tanya Donnelly today. She mentioned
that Belly will begin touring Feb./March in England and Europe,
returning to the US in April. She performed an acoustical version of
"Untogether" on the air. She also mentioned 3/4th of Belly's Star CD
was recorded in Nashville, and her early influences were country
singers. Interesting. UK and Europe Belly fans let us know how the tour
    is going.

I watched it, but was involved in another "bugger up the current

I watched it too, but only switched on as the programme started so I
didn't have time to get a tape sorted - I was too mesmerised by the
performances, my own favourites being Sonic Youth, Sugar, and the
mighty Smashing Pumpkins. I was also pretty keen on the sounds the
guitar player from Rage Against The Machine was making.

Saw the Belly concert in Sydney in June. Juliana Hatfield, ex-Blake
Babies, provided doleful support. Belly provided the best show of the
year by a mile. The bass player stomped around like Tony Adams on Cup
daY, but I put that out of my mind and focussed on Tanya Donnelly, the
queen of the world. She can decapitate my dolls anytime she likes.

Picked up the Gepetto remix on Friday - it has a great cover of a Gram
Parsons song, and two other unreleased songs. A> good investment.

The week they toured, the Breeders were booked, but cancelled. What a
jam that could have been - the Deal sisters, Donnelly and Hatfield on
the one stage! One can dream. The new Breeders EP, "Cannonball", is, to
quote a previous correspondent, 'a corker'.

Any 'Single Gun Theory' fans out there?

Saw belly on the T.V. playing Full Moon at some festival and they were
excellent - liked the bass player - had too chuckle he seems a right
nut-job.Also heard one of the trax off of The Breeders E.P. - liked it
a lot as well - there's something arrogant and "punky" in thier style
    that's very appealing -

I think they used to have some bloke playing bass, but he left and some
woman took over. Can't remember what either of them are called though.
Or even if I'm talking about the right band for that matter...

rewatched last weeks The Beat, with film of Belly playing live at the
XFM fest. The bass player is certainly a woman, and dashed attractive
too. she was wearing Doc Martens and black tights, if that helps?

Mike - a dress or skirt has nothing to do with it. Have you seen what
the bass player out of the Manic Street Preachers has taken to wearing
    lately? Blummen tart.

Last year at Readin' the Smashing Pumpkins also wore " drag "

I honestly can't see the attraction or meaning of this - is it
supposed to be "alternative" or anti- something - you wouldn't catch me
    doin' that!

Or was it supposed to be funny???????????????????????????

Perhaps, like Suede, they are indulging in 'gender terrorism', or
trying to break down the barriers between the traditional sex-roles. Or
    something.

Ahem, and thus the role of wordy discourse on the demise of music
    criticism was witnessed.

Has anyone heard the Belly track off a Hendrix tribute out at the
moment. Is it worth the AUS$29?

I presume silence at the moment means they're either touring or
    recording. Life goes on etc

May your belly grow larger over the holiday
