1089.0. "Single of the Year: 1992" by ARRODS::OHAGANB (Kipperhead Rides Again) Wed Dec 02 1992 12:40

"Friday I'm in Love" - The Cure.

Prompted by Danny Baker mentioning that another Danny, Kelly in
fact and editor of "Q" (ex NME?), made this his single of the
    year. I totally agree. Perfection.

"Friday - I'm in Love" - The only good Cure song ever (IMHO) and a very good one
at that!! Single of the year contender ? It's not *that* good.

My vote goes to :

	Connected -	Stereo MCs

Just my own personal opinion but I thought Friday is one of the worst
songs I've ever heard - pure poppy crap - anyway

I'll go for - Blue Room - Orb

                               and

Step It Up - Stereo MC's

    	can't ignore the MC's

well, i think Friday I'm in Love deserves all the votes it gets, i love
    that song.

however, there was one better in 1992 (in my opinion), and that's
Mesmerise by Chapterhouse. at least, i _think_ it came out in
1992...someone tell me if i'm wrong!

IMHO (part 97)...a good slice of honest to good Pop sure beats an
epileptic trip round the dance floor or some skinny white noise
merchants straight out of the Velvets Academy. In case I forget,
Prefab Sprouts "The Sound of Crying" is nipping the heels of The
    Cure for a close second.

Mesmerised came out in december '91 - got it for xmas.

I'll never forget the sound of the "special" bass sound when they
played at Q.M.U. - the whole place was vibrating - ooh er!

    Tough choices,

I rank 10,000 Maniac's "These are Days" and "Candy Everybody
Wants", up at the top, and possibly Our Time In Eden as album of
    the year. IMHO :^)

Two singles this year did it for me - "If I could change your mind"
from the mighty Sugar, and "Middle of the Road", from Denim.

Flowered Up wasn't hyped and Suede was ass-licked by Melody Maker.

NME carried the headline "The greatest band in the world ?" after Flowered Up
released It's On. OK, so that was 1991 but it's still hype surely.

Nah.... Weekender wasn't hyped (Much). Suede was hyped more by Melody
    Maker.

The NME recently had an offer of a tape or cd of selected 1992 Singles of
the Week for a very reasonable six quid so I coughed up and bought it. This
record includes singles such as Sugar 'Changes', Carter USM 'Only Living Boy',
The Orb 'Assassin', PJ Harvey 'Sheela na gig', The Fall 'Free Range', and
many others. It's a very enjoyable disc and a good one to practice use of
the cd's "random" button on.

Fave tracks for me are Faith no More's 'Everything's Ruined', the CUSM one,
Wedding Present's 'California', a Sonic Youth one and, well, several others.
Great value and a rare chance to sample the work of many interesting groups.
