1088.0. "Learning to read music - book recommendations" by SYSTEM::COCKBURN (Craig Cockburn) Thu Nov 26 1992 20:43

Hi,
I'm looking for some recommendations on books which can teach me
how to read music. I have a piano and I have numerous songbooks
with both sol-fa and staff notation, as I'm in a choir. Not knowing how
to read music in the choir hasn't been much of a problem as I just copy
the notes the musicians make and learn from them, but I'd like to take the
music home and practice it on the piano too.

I want to know what keys form which scales, what various time
signatures mean, how to work out the key from the signature, and so on.
I don't want a beginners guide to playing the piano which teaches
me how to play three blind mice and 20 other boring songs. In fact, I
don't really need a book with any songs in it as I've already got plenty
song books. Something which explains the notations on sol-fa as well as
staff would be useful too.

	thanks
		Craig

You might like to look at 'Introducing Music' by Otto Karolyi, which is in
Penguin. It covers all of the basic terminology in a well-written way - and
it's short!

There is also an exellent pocket size reference book available from
Modern Music. It contains easy access reference informtaion for most
    aspects of musical theory.

If you're interested I'll find out the name and post it here.

I eventually got a couple of books:

"The AB guide to music theory" it's called, and is in two parts.
This is published by the Associated Board of Music and is widely used by
people taking the piano grade exams.
