1079.0. "The Macc Lads" by WELCLU::HEDLEY (Chris the Git) Mon Oct 26 1992 12:52

    Does anyone know if the Macc Lads have any plans to release anthing
    soon, and what the current line up is? The "Sex, Pies and Videotape"
    vid was great, but it's ages since they last released an album.

    Chris.

    PS on the video, was the song sung by one of the roadies (can't
       remember its name) a new one?

1079.3Crude, rude, but bloody brilliant!WELCLU::BROWNIThe Man who sold the WorldWed Nov 11 1992 21:1912
    I loved the Macc Lads. They were from Macclesfield (hence the name) and
    they were bloody brilliant live, although definately NOT a gig to take
    your girlfriend to!!

    Don't know what they're up to now though. I'd be interested to know,
    'cos I'd like to go see them again. Trouble is, they hate southerners,
    and they play London only when absolutely forced to. I went to see them
    in Milton Keynes, and the crowd got a hell of abuse from the band
    members. The band also have their own comic strip in a certain mens
    magazine called Fiesta (so I'm told!!)

    I saw the in Reading and they were shite. They spat on the crowd and
    swore at them telling them to f*** off home - and all these people had
    paid to see them!

    Who do they think they are ?

    Aren't this bunch the ones whose songs rely on sexist and racist
    'humour' for their appeal?

    A friend of mine went to see them a couple of years ago. The
    band arranged beer drinking contests so that everyone got drunk
    and kicked the shit out of each other. Sounds fun!

    Chris.

    meaning that this note was meant to be a discussion of the band, not a
    hate campaign. Can we keep it that way?
1079.13CHEFS::FIDDLERMLe singe est dans L'arbreFri Nov 13 1992 12:595
    Doesn't sound like a hate campaign to me. Yet! If you start a note on
    a band with a nature like The Macc Lads, you have to expect polarised
    reactions.

    A note on a band is not just for its follows. Its to allow people to
    express their dislikes about the band too, maybe in the hope that some
    intellegent follower of said band will come along and explain the bands
    hidden intelectual side that the naked eye might not see.

    Well. Not much chance of any of the above coming true is there ?

	WELCLU::HEDLEY, dont bother arguing, its not worth the typing.
	Comments like "still shite" and "punch of pratts" arent discussion.

    re .15, you're probably right, but I'll reply anyway in the unlikely
    event that anyone actually bothers to read it.

    Perhaps Mr Dallison would demonstrate said intelligence to us and explain
    why he considers the band to be "still shite" and "a bunch of prats"?
    I personally like them because musically they are very good, and the
    lyrics, while coarse, are hilarious and (usually) intelligently
    written. Admittedly they're not to everyone's taste, but at least they
    provide some light relief with their irreverance, compared to their
    many politically obsessed contemporaries.

	Dallison,

	Not at all, in fact as I had no use for it, I gave it to my sister,
	a much worthier beneficiary. Now you know that, you can get back to
	your "say nothing, unless derogatory" noting style. Thanks.

1079.20I don't care, I like 'em!WELCLU::BROWNIThe Man who sold the WorldFri Nov 13 1992 18:0510
    Well not wanting to disturb the flow of insults, verbal punches, etc,
    I'd just like to break the ice as I did earlier and say I love 'em.

    What is wrong with everybody? I may not necessaarily agree with what
    they sing about, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

    Incidently, they do a great version of Sweets 'Blockbuster' called
    'Fat Bastard'.

1079.22Something like that!WELCLU::BROWNIThe Man who sold the WorldTue Nov 17 1992 20:3015
    Yeah, something along those lines!

    Also about 'his gut being 40ft'
               'never had a bird'
               'being hung like a small prawn'

    and other such loveliness.

    I think it was written about one of their roadies called Ben Nevis who
    used to (well he did both times I saw them) climb on top of the
    speakers, drop his trousers, and light farts!!!

    Such originality!!!

Talking of covers, they did an interesting version of Nutbush City
Limits, retitled "Knutsford Scabby Women". Needless to say the words
were slightly different...

Is Ben Nevis the same person as the infamous "Dan" (as in "Dan's Big
Log", etc)?
1079.24newsWELCLU::HEDLEYConquistador Instant LeprosySat Jul 17 1993 22:1312
Some news on the Macc Lads, if anyone's interested... a new album is due
out in October, apparently called Ale House Rock. All the other albums
are being re-released in August, along with a compilation of the stuff from
EPs, so the sull back catalogue of filth will be available.

The reason that the new album has been so long in coming is apparently
because Mutley got bottled at a gig in Wales, and sustained severe head
injuries. For the same reason, they will no longer be touring. Bummer.

So there you have it.

Chris.
1079.25New tour!WELSWS::HEDLEYLager LoutFri Apr 08 1994 13:3311
Some more news; the Lads are back together, and their tour is at the end
of the month. I can't remember all the dates, but they're playing at the
London Astoria on the 22nd and Northampton on the 23rd.

After all the delays, the Ale House Rock LP is finally due for release
in the next few weeks! I had a `preview' of this album when I called
the Lads' Information Service, as it totally drowned out whatever it
was that Muttley was whittering on about. It appeared to have quite a
strong C&W feel to it, which was a bit scary...

Chris.
1079.26Alehouse RockWELSWS::HEDLEYLager Lout on the Info HighwayTue May 10 1994 12:2621
In spite of a fractured skull, a heart attack, various prison sentances
and a migration to warmer climes, the Lads have somehow managed to find
time to record another album. Alehouse Rock marks their unwelcome return
to record shops across the country.

The band lineup includes the usual rabble; Muttley McLad on bass,
Al O'Peesha on guitar and piano, Binbag on backing vocals (she and Al
deny all rumours, whatever that means) and, sadly, Uncle Knobby, doing
things best left unsaid. The new members are drummer Winston Dread, who
had no drum kit, but something he refers to as `riddim', and John Mard,
on additional guitars and violence.

The new album, as well as having the usual smattering of crude and rude
punk and hard rock ditties, sees the band taking advantage of their
increasing musical talents by branching of in a number of unexpected
directions, as there are an assortment of ballads, a skiffle number,
a couple of country and western tracks (?!) and even a shanty. All in
all an excellent effort, and anyone who wants to be offended could do
worse than pick up a copy.

Chris.
