1063.0. "Smashing Pumpkins" by WELCLU::GREENB (Apache Twins - where are they now?) Tue Sep 01 1992 13:53

Who are these people? They certainly make a damn fine noise. A friend
just lent me a tape, so I know nothing about the band except that I
find their brand of near-psychedelic thrashing (or sometimes not-so
    thrashing) strangely appealing.

The Smashing Pumpkins currently appear on the soundtrack to the
motion picture "singles" doing a song called "Drown". They are
also on the newest Sub Pop compilation called "Afternoon Delights"
on which they do a song called "La Dolly Vita".

They have a full length album out called "Gish" which was followed
by the the EP "Lull". Also currently available are their Peel
    Sessions.

They played this last weekend at the Reading festival (I'm not
sure what day as I'm on the wrong side of the pond). Rumorwise,
I've heard they're going to have a new EP out in October with a
full album to follow near the first of the year.

They're from Chicago and their lead singer/guitarist, Billy
Corgan, attended the Berklee School of Music here on Boston.
    [I think]

I do agree they make some damn fine noise.

1063.2Gish is GoodJURA::PELAZ::MACFADYENbrighter laterMon Mar 29 1993 13:0714
I had a loan of 'Gish' recently and I like it a lot. It's one of the very
best grunge records I've heard although it's a pity to lump it under that
label. They have a very strong guitar-based sound and although they can play
satisfyingly loud, they vary the pace with some sensitive and quiet tracks
which are reminiscent of quiet My Bloody Valentine tracks. It helps to have
both male and female vocalists.

And have they released that difficult second album yet?

I see that they've released an ep "Cherub Rock", and that the new lp "Siamese
<something>" is imminent. Are all the tracks on the ep contained on the lp,
does anyone know?

If not, I suppose I'll just have to buy them both...

heard one of the trax off of the e.p. - take it it was the title track
    - found it quite boring - but that was only one listen.

I think you will need to buy both, Rod, but I'm not sure. I heard a
track off the lp last night, it sounded every bit as fab as anything
    off 'Gish'.

Is the lp (it's Siamese Dream, by the way) actually out yet?

I heard a couple of tracks off "Siamese Dream" yesterday, and liked
them both. I think one of them was the current single. The album was
reviewed in the papers last week, which usually means it's out today.

They are playing the Barrowlands so I take it a tour is on the way.
    I think it's verve that's supporting.

The new lp is out (as of last Monday), and they are touring in
    September.

I bought the lp on Monday, put it in the car tape player, and it's
stayed there ever since. I love this album already - it ranges from
real breeze-block rifferama (copyright NME) through to some totally
beautiful, gentle, melodic stuff. The nine-minute epic, Silverf***,
is just that - epic - and also very harrowing to listen to in parts. It
starts off kinda loud with tribal drums, goes all cosmic in the middle,
dips down to a solo vocal from Billy Corgan before all hell is let
loose and the whole thing falls apart in a mess of feedback. Wonderful.
