1052.0. "Husker Du ---> Sugar" by LARVAE::BEGLEY_M (Martin Begley @UCG) Wed Jul 29 1992 13:32

One of the great bands who split up before I saw them live were Husker
Du. However salvation is now at hand, Bob Mould has formed a new band
called Sugar and they play London on Friday 31/7 at the Grand and Saturday
1/8 at ULU. Needless to say I'm going.

Latest NME has a 2 page spread on the Husker's discography and an
interview/story on Sugar. Also see the concert reviews in RAD_RAD's
    note on Sugar.

First album from Sugar supposed to be released in September, followed
    by another one next year.

Concert review will be posted on Monday.

Saw Sugar on Friday night at The Grand. I went there with very high
expectations from the reviews I had read of them and was not in the
least bit disappointed. They are certainly a worthy successor to the
legend that Husker Du built up.

Support bands were Sweet Jesus and The Boo Radleys, neither were
particularly to my liking so 'nuff said.

Sugar came on and instantly launched into a sonic assault with no
breaks between the first 4 or 5 songs. The energy and noise were very
reminiscent of early Husker Du, circa Zen Arcade or New Day Rising era.

No discernable song titles were given but they all sounded good, can't
wait for the album to be released. Bob Mould sang just about all the
songs except for 1 or 2 which the bassist sang (David Barbe?).

Definitely one of the best concerts of the year for me so far. Highly
    recommended.
1052.2If Sugar as as sweet as you baby...JUMBLY::BURGESSMe and you and a dog named BooThu Aug 27 1992 07:1710
You're gonna hate me for this... and I'm not doing it on
purpose, but...

Saw SUGAR on the Chart Show recently. The single reminded me of XTC.

Now, SUGAR were number one in Indie chart with the song in question, 'Changes'
but I doubt wether XTC will ever atain that particular accolade.

HUSKER DU .What a band.It was always my ambition to see them live but
alas no.I saw Grant with NOVA MOB and Bob with SUGAR.I'll probably not
see Greg as I here he's working as a waiter now.

PS. I blame Grant for the split.

PPS. There's a great live CD on the go just now called
         "LYNDALES BURNING". Get it.

re - 1 'Lyndales Burning' - is this a Husker Du release? Is it
official or bootleg? Is it available in the UK?

     "Lyndales Burning"

Very bootleg, but not the usual cash-in.
After all who's going to make money out of Husker Du.It's one for the
fans circa "Flip your Wig" with a couple of songs from "Candy Apple
Grey" and a healthy dose of "New Day Rising".
Try a company called "Music by Mail" who advertise in Record
      collector magazine in the UK.

1052.6Husker Du - not forgottenFILTON::JOLLIFFE_AThu Mar 04 1993 16:4914
have you guys seen the live Husker video, Makes No Sense?
This really is the business - recorded in London circa New Day Rising,
complete with Beatles cover and long and bloody version of that long
one from Zen Arcade - Reoccurring Dreams? (Also, git-players, Bob can
be seen to indulge in a brief tapping session whilst on the above
number - no, it aint like Eddie VH, but who needs that stuff anyway..)
Personally, I thought Lyndales Burning was poor quality - maybe better
off buying a 'rea;' boot. Also just released on CD is all of Huskers
immensely hard to find (and sometimes valuable) early material,
    pre-Zen, pre-Metal Circus et al.

    Everything Falls Apart...

New Sugar lp April 5. Called Beaster (I think), its 30 mins long, and
is made up of much harder/spartan material than Copper Blue.

sounds cool, but why only 30 mins these days when you have to spend 13
    quid on a CD??

    Come ON, people...

Still, I'll look forward to it nonetheless.
    Cheers

Maybe it'll be proportionally less than 13 quid then. Even if it isn't,
I think I'd prefer 30 genuine minutes rather than 40 or 50 padded ones.

    Trevor

P.S. Actually, you only have to pay 10.50 for a CD, assuming that you
use someone like Bee-Bee's mail order. See ROCKS::CDSWAP_UK note 114.

Bought 'Beaster' last weekend, 6 tracks on it, total of 30 mins of
    music.

First impressions were that it's much harder than Copper Blue, more
akin to something Husker Du might have put out. This sounds like the
stuff I heard at the live concert last year ie: great!

    Buy it
1052.12KRAKAR::WARWICKCan't you just... ?Mon Apr 19 1993 14:313

I bought Beaster last week, and I agree with .11. It is harder than
Copper Blue, and all the better for it.

They are playing at an all day concert in Finsbury Park sometime soon
and then play at Brixton Academy on July 5th along with Come and Madder
    Rose.
