1047.0. "Danny Baker's Morning Edition" by COMICS::WEGG (Some hard boiled eggs & some nuts.) Thu Jul 09 1992 12:41

After discussion with another regular noter, I reckon that the
wealth of material (trivia) on "Danny Baker's Morning Edition"
warrants a topic in here (if not a whole conference!).

However, if you don't happen to be around when the answer to a trivia
question is given, you never get to find out. Here are a couple I've
       missed:

       	 i) Who did the Beatles write "Back in the USSR" for? It was a
female 'performer', who decided not to record it.

ii) Brian Epstein had plans to make a British TV series similar to
"The Monkees". Which pop group was to star in it?

iii) Who made an album called "Eldorado", and what was on the
            cover?

       Any clues?

       Ian.

P.S. For anyone who hasn't heard it yet (what the hell *do* you listen
to in the morning?), Danny Baker does the morning show on BBC
Radio 5 - on nostalgic crackly medium wave. The only show brave
enough to play Frank Zappa at 8 am!

This was from this morning, so I can remember back that far. It was
ELO, but the cover isn't the spaceship (New World Record), but
a reproduction of Judy Garland's red slipper from the Wizard or Oz.

Listen out for good ol' Rick Wakeman!

He was on 2 weeks ago discussing the Mellotron and today he was
recounting some stuff that happened when all didn't go to plan during a
    gig!!

He told the story of when he was appearing in concert and the complete
power supply disappeared. He then went on-stage and told jokes for an
hour....only to be told by his manager that the power was restored
    after only 3 minutes!!!

Wakeman and Baker are great in conversation and I eagerly await the
"Topographic Oceans" story which is due shortly.

Although Danny is away for a couple of weeks, Chris Morris is sitting
in for him. He used to do the Sunday morning show on GLR until DB took

I used to enjoy listening to Chris Morris , but apparently Victor
Lewis-Smith feels that Chris Morris has ripped him off. They don't
     enjoy the best of friendships.

Lewis-Smith said "Immitation is the sincerest form of someone being

Rick Wakeman's last phone call to the show was good. He described how
he once ordered a curry while on stage with Yes, during a bit of the
show that he didn't have much to do in. The rest of the band were not
    pleased...

Also, the album "Tales from Topographic Oceans" was recorded just when
the vogue for using recording studios based in country houses was
starting. For some unexplained reason, Yes used a studio in London
instead, but filled it up with agricultural items, so the keyboards
were all sitting on straw bales, and they had cardboard cutout cows all
over the place. Rock Stars, eh?

R.W. also plays the keyboard part on Clive Dunn's "Grandad".

I didn't think it was *that* funny. Who is Frank Ifield anyway ? The
second part of the call didn't get broadcast, as the remark it
contained was deemed to be too rude, although it was obviously a good

He recommended catching them with your dog, rather than shooting them.
If DB had been on, it would have been a brilliant call, but John

Later on, poor old Mark Kermode was having a really hard time doing his

Duncan McKenzie? Not THE Duncan McKenzie? The Ex Leeds player who

One of the reasons Baker left 606 was that he felt he was becoming
the football fans' champion and did'nt feel comfortable with it.
Pity that because, aside from his wit, his irreverant treatment of
players, clubs and chairmen, certainly livened up early Saturday

Further down the rat-hole I will say that the only person who's

McKenzie played for Nottm Forest, Leeds, Anderlecht, Everton, Chelsea

Okay the full question is...what is the connection between David Bowie,
Neil Diamond, Victor Borge and Martin Scorcese.

At 07:45 this morning the answer was still unknown; however, at least

It was still going at 8:30. Two people have now said "they
all have different coloured eyes", which is not the right answer.

David Bowie has different coloured eyes because while at school
he was hit so hard by the school bully that one of his eyes changed
colour from blue to brown. Neil Diamond, Victor Borge and Martin
    	Scorcese weren't!

This has been going for three days now, and DB says that the answer
is staring you in the face (which probably means it will be something

The voice was Lenny Bruce ('twas ever thus).
Lenny was played by Dustin Hoffman in the film about him.
Dustin Hoffman was in the Graduate with Anne Bancroft.
Anne Bancroft is married to Mel Brookes.
Mel Brookes was responsible for the film "Elephant Man".

A lot of the stuff that he's done on the morning show had also been

about some good topic from the past, not necessarily with the intention

topic again. That seems to be what happened with bangs on the head this

    No I haven't seen a paper yet, but I suppose it's something that's been
reported in one of the tabloids, and I expect its a result of the Radio

Radio 1 gets a new Controller in November, and the general supposition
is that he will get rid of some of the older faces (voices). The new
guy was responsible for sacking Tony Blackburn at a previous station,
perhaps DLT saw the writing on the wall. However, this new guy was also
responsible for getting Danny Baker on GLR, so there might be some
chance of DB going to Radio 1... He's got a new late night TV series
    coming up too.

The series starts Saturday September 18th. There are two seperate
