some reference to it here.

Anyone know/like:

The Sounds of Blackness

Shaun Christopher

I do like some Rave but the best I've heard in ages is the Bassheads -
Is There Anybody Out There? - must be one of the best dance records of
    ALL time!

I really really like some techno stuff I've heard. But the trouble with the
rave scene, speaking as yer traditional pop fan who's been brought up to
focus his attention on bands and personalities, is that all the rave artists
are so *faceless*. There are a myriad of names who exist for only one record
and then disappear again. Plus there aren't that many distinct personalities
anyway.

The KLF and the Shamen do have personality and continuity, but I guess they're
not mainstream rave artists.

For someone who's not clubbing it the whole time, it's very hard to get a grip
on what's happening. Of course if you're not clubbing it, why bother? Because
some rave records are just dead dead good.

Incidentally, there's a good ravey bit in "Basic Instinct".

like this kind of music. If they didnt there wouldn't be a

Okay. Educate me. WHY do you like it? I like a fair cross-section of
musical styles myself but I CANNOT see the appeal of this particular
one. IMHO it has nothing going for it at all...

SOME people like breeding dogs but I wouldn't expect to see a note on
it in THIS conference because it has bugger all to do with music. I
view THIS topic in the same light....

Get a grip, this note is for people who like
Rave for there own reasons, not for a slagging match. Your
entitled to your opinion but it has nothing to do with the topic.
Im not going to explain why I like it for your benefit..If you
CANNOT see the appeal go into another conference and burst their
brains... Very boring...hurry up and leave.

      Anyway....

If you can get radio Forth on your trany, tune in on
Tuesday night at 10pm for The Time Frequeny & Oceanic, recorded
LIVE last week at The Calton, Edinburgh. Was there myself

    Behave, unruly lot!

One of the best rave mixers around must be Psychic TV, who
now seem to be spending most of their time in San Francisco.

Don't rush out and buy any old PTV record though, 'cos theyre
a versatile lot, and some of it's a bit strange.

Try out "Tune In (Turn It On)" for starters, and thats an oldie.

Andy, you should know better than to argue with this lot. It's in one
ear and out the other. Just like the so called music that they listen
to. The term Rave and Crap have just about reached the same meaning in
the dictionary. It's just a shame that they can't see that they are
all at the mercy of the corporate record companies. They think that
it's dead "underground" but this is on of the largerst money spinning
trends since punk. Not all dance music is crap, but most rave is.
Basic on the beat drum patterns and tonic triads pumping out so that
minimal thought is needed to dance to it or even to make it.

    IMHO

Haven't seen the movie, yet, but according to Oliver Adams it's Rave the

    ;-).

He's from Belgium, by the way. The home of a LOT of great rave music.

1025.16Get Wise PEKING::BARKERNA Four Foot PruneTue May 26 1992 15:2536
My musical tastes are just that. Musical and with taste.

Musically, Rave music has to be the lowest form. There is no real
musical structure and certainly no composition. Alot of it also walks
a very dodgy line between copyright and just plain theft. It is
about time a law was passed banning sampling to the extent that it is
being used. I know that it is an old subject and has been explored
many times, but I feel that it is getting beyond a joke now. If you
like to dance so much then why not listen to the original beats by AWB
and James Brown as opposed to second and third hand copies of the
sample. I sincerely hope that Talk Talk win the suit with alot of
sampling co's as well with EMI for screwing up their songs.

Many of you say that the programmers are really clever etc. But wise
up lads n lasses. You can buy the mixes that they use from mail order
companies in the back of any music paper. There ain't nothing clever
    about that.

    On the subject of D.J.'s at raves. I saw D J Mikee (yep M I K doubwwl
    E) last year, as I wanted to get an unbiased view of the Rave Scene.
He was complete shit, all he did was shout two or three times into a
mike. He never mixed live records together, and sat down for the
whole GIG. He also did about a half hour slot. If I ever went to see
a band and they only did half and hour then I would demand my money
back etc. I love dancing just as much as the next bloke, but I would
say that I get more of a groove out of a decent band or a great club
that plays songs with more than just a crap four back beat all bloody
night, and doesn't go under the guise of a rave.

    Takin it down,

M C Nigel. (not an old boring fart, but an angry young man who is
just about pissed of with naffing "Rave" music for sixteen year old
kids to get pissed and stoned for the first time - come on guys you
aint the first people to ever take mind expanding drugs, don't seem to
expand your mind that much does it.?)

Wow!

What an emotive lot we have in here!

I said this before I know but we do have new "noters" in here:

Music is different because PEOPLE are different.
Us it how you want, enjoy it for your OWN reasons.
Prejudice appears in many forms dont' it!

Music is around in many forms and people get out of it what they wish,
how they wish. Why don't those who can't get their minds round these
simple concepts stick to noting in the notes containing the music that they
like. Channel some of that energy into something positive eh!

---------

Has anyone heard the new Queen Latifah album?
The single :"How do I love thee" is the freshest thing I've heard for ages.
I want to find out what the rest is like.
I heard it played at Zatopeks on friday and in Trade on Saturday and it
rips through the dance floor like a storm.

If anyone sees Shaun Christopher billed live somewhere GO! This kind of
stuff doesn't often transpose to live PA well but I saw her at Caio Baby
at the Fridge on Wednesday and this woman can burst ear drums at 80ft!

Well said that light in the dark. I quite like dance music, not enough
to be able to name bands or go out and buy records, but a world without
variety is a dull place. And for me, it it the effect the music has that
counts, not the techniques used to produce it, be they simple on
    complicated.

Maybe I'm just old, but could someone describe "rave" to me? I've seen a few
examples in this note but I've never heard the bands. Is this a UK phenomenon
or does the US rave too?

Sorry, I verbed a noun.

> does the US rave too?

I think not: an American friend who has been over here for a year is trying to
find a (prefereably illegal) rave before she goes home in order to be able to
look her friends in the eye when she gets back. I think there's a myth over there
that its all 'happening' over here.

They do rave there. She called them "Mr Floppy" parties. I can't imagine
a rave doing well here with a name like that.
She says that they don't get quite do wild there as we do.

She's moving here later in the year!!!

So, MR CAPS LOCK, whats your definition of a perfect RAVER. You
obviously don't agree with all the Whistle blowing and wicked coloured
hats. I'm intreaged, you made quite an interesting statement, but
seeing as the majority of Ravers in Reading do Blow Whistles or wear
either baseball caps and colour hats, plusa you being a DJ, you're not
really making a very good name for yourself.

I think what MR CAPSLOCK is refering to is the silly little hangers
on. You know the ones, who were into Bros, until they saw an
article in Smash hits that told them that raving was going to be
the big thing for `92! These are also the ones which seem to manage
to get themselves on T.V and into the newspapers, giving ravers a bad
name. For them all raving is, is going out on a Saturday night and
getting out their faces, and going round asking people "Whats your
name, where you from and what ya on??". Just ask anybody who has been
`Raving' a bit longer than the past 6 months and you'll find a
completly different outlook on the scene.

6 months and you'll find a completely different outlook on the scene >>

I thought the Mr CAPSLOCK stuff was a wind-up. You mean all that drivel was
meant seriously? It's ok to give 100 assorted Grannies Heartattacks and
when the Pedigree Chum runs out, just let the dogs out on the sheep?

And anyway, Mr CAPSLOCK, why the discrimation against people who ain't
happy? LOVE TO ALL THE HAPPY PEOPLE - 'the rest can just sod off'.

    Hi,

anyone attend the rave at Prestwick (is that near the Ayr plant?) ? Just
yesterday I got the tour schedule of Pragha Kahn & Jade 4 U. Well better
late than never, I guess ;-).

The rest of their UK tour:

	03-jul-1992	Dartford	Bridewell
04-jul-1992	Manchester	Tv appearance on "The Hitman and Her"
	05-jul-1992	London Ritzy 2000

    Then off to the USA:

	09-jul-1992	New York	Limelight
	10-jul-1992	New York	Tunnel Club

And last back in Europe again, in France:

	19-jul-1992	Strasbourg	Metro

Their new 12" "Rave Alert" is a crude remake of Rave Alarm, which was a
European hit about a year ago. This one's the sucessor to Injected with a
Poison, and is 141 BPM also.
