1015.0. "Thomas Dolby" by YUPPY::OHAGANB (Give my regards to Sgt Fury) Wed May 13 1992 15:33

"Close...but no cigar." The new single. Growing on me, very gradually.

Yup, I fear Dolby will never again produce something as brilliant
as "The Flat Earth." What an album.

I have one of his - "The Golden Age of Wireless" - because Andy
Partridge contributes harmonica to "Europa and the Pirate Twins."

I really like several songs on that ("The Airwaves," "Europa")

    Andy Partridge also produced "Urges."

The only TD album I've got is "Aliens ate my Buick". How does the other
    stuff compare to that ?

Close but no cigar - quite. It'll stop growing after a while, it's OK
on the radio while you're driving around, but you wouldn't want it in
the house. This is in fact the first guest appearance by Edddie van
Halen since he played on something by Michael Jackson.

The Thomas Dolby/Andy Partridge connection, part II. Dolby was at one
point going to replace XTC's original keyboard player (Barry something,
didn't he end up in Shriekback or am I getting confused?) until they
decided to go for a second guitar player.

    Trivially yours,

    Bob

Barry Andrews (?). Yep, he was in Shriekback.

I had to ask this as it has been annoying me since I first heard it -
what does it mean?!? Or am I being really dumb...?

    Thanks,

    Debs.

    What does what mean?

The title 'Close... But no Cigar' basically means 'good try but not
what you were aiming to achieve'

It probably derives from American fairground hucksters who would've handed
out a cigar (that's a *prize*?) to someone who did something, er, right.
So if they did it wrong, but nearly right, they'd have been "close, but
no cigar". It's a phrase frequently seen in US notes confs, but I don't care
for it myself. Not part of my cultural heritage, you see.

There is a new Thomas Dolby album out (now, or very soon). If anyone
buys it, can you put a summary/review in here ?

    Answering my own question again...

I picked up the recent album, "Astronauts and Heretics" while in the US
last week. It was already discounted, which presumably means it has not
    been selling very well !

It's OK, but not brilliant - four or five good tracks, the rest are a
    bit ho-hum.

Is Silk Pyjamas on Astronauts and Heritics? I have this as a CD
single and it also includes Airhead, Urges, and Leipzig.

Urges and Leipzig are the best tracks.

I also heard another track, Europa, Part 2, which seemed to have
samples of other songs in it (am I wrong?).

Not sure. This track is on the album, but it is based on an earlier
track - how closely I'm not sure since I don't have the original.
