1010.0. "Our House?" by CHEFS::BRIGGSR (Four Flat Tyres on a Muddy Road) Fri Apr 24 1992 14:58

I've been racking my brains for the artist who did the 'Our House' song
currently used in a building society ad (effective isn't it? Can't even
    remember which building society!).

Who was it? Was it the same group who did "Toast and Marmalade for tea"?
If not, then who were they as well (circa 1970)?

Madness recorded 'Our House' but I'm afraid I've never heard of ' Toast
and Marmalade for tea'. Could of been them tho' I'm not really a fan so
I don't know all their hits. (Besides, I was only 6 in 1970...)

I have to pass on that one.

Paul Young circa 1970? I'd be surpised.

So Our House was CSN&Y. I had a gut feel it was but wasn't sure.

The 'Toast and Marmalade for Tea' record of about 1970 was as sickly as
it sounds. However, a friend of mine had it, much to my surpise, and it
transpired it was some real 'hip' artist in another guise. That's why
    he had it.

It's a bit like I couldn't understand why a hippie aquaintance of mine
was heavily into Demis Roussos. Turned out he started life in the cult
group 'John's Children' who also included some other big names who
    escape me now.

Unless the ravages of time and alcohol abuse are playing tricks on my memory
I believe Vangelis was also a member of John's Children

Stuart
1010.8I don't know if the ravages of time are responsible :-)TAEC::LADRETCaught with the meat in the mouthFri Apr 24 1992 21:0116
But neither Demis Roussos nor Vangelis have ever been members of the
John's Children.

They were in fact two members of the Aphrodite's Child, a greek band of the
late 60's/early 70's.

The John's Children are mainly famous for two reasons :
- Marc Bolan (of future T.Rex fame) has been a member of this band for a
short time
- they released in their early days a faked live album named 'The Legendary
Orgasm album' that was in fact a studio album with false applauses. If I
remember well (I was only 2 years old at that time :-)) this album had some
censorship problems because of its title.

It was the ravages. You are of course completely correct.

yep I was getting confused. Must be the Child and Children bit. This
guy was into both as I remember (also being an orginal Tyrannosaurus
    Rex fan as well).

Nope, I don't thing the 'Toast & Marmalade' group were Chickory (Son of
    my Father) Tip.

Delving into the more obscure parts of my brain (why is it easier to do
that than remember everyday things I'm supposed to know?), I seem to
recall that "Toast and Marmalade for Tea" was performed by a duo called
Tin Tin. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Don't know about a duo called Tin Tin but I remember Stephen Tin Tin
Duffy who released a few singles, and used to be a member of Duran Duran
before they hit the big time.

Yes!!! Re -3 (about). I'm absolutely convinced you are right. Tin Tin
was the name. The recording was on Polydor if I recall correctly.

Now the next step in this detective game is who was in the group
because I'm sure someone of note was playing/singing.

    re -1:

My trusty Guinness Book of Hit Singles reveals that "Toast and
Marmalade" never troubled the charts. So why has it lodged itself in
    our memories?

However, I did discover that one Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy had a couple
of hits in the early to mid 80s, firstly as Tin Tin, later in his own
name. Is it this person you are thinking about?

I can't believe that people are forgetting Steven Duffy and that
wonderful song Kiss Me With Your Mouth. circa 1985 if I remember
    right.

It charted within the top ten I believe.

Tin Tin Duffy is still around, he formed a band about three years ago
that have released an album or two ( I think).

Re .15 and why has Toast and Marmalde lodged itself into my brain.

Well a friend of mine who was an ardent Cream, Clapton, Alexis Korner,
Air Force, John McLaughlin, Colloseum, Mahavishnu Orchestra fanatic
bought it! And I'm convinced the reason he bought it because there was
someone in the line up of Tin Tin (session man perhaps?) who was in one
of the afore mentioned line ups or others of that ilk circa 1971.

Looks like I just may have to call him in Virginia to get the
    answer!
