997.0. "Last Night on Top Of The Pops" by YUPPY::OHAGANB (King Bontempi Sound) Fri Mar 20 1992 19:32

Def Leppard. Heavy Metal goes to the Beauty Salon; no acne and
dandruff, nasty and horrible dirty bits. This is stylised,
blow-dryed, laquered and layered, sickly-sweet harmonised,
comfort metal. This band has been under the hairdryer once too
often; they look and sound like a bunch of neutered poodles on
big night out. Definitely not music from under the gritty
foreskin of Rock n Roll, where you'll find the very fine
Lemmy and Motorhead.

barry.

Ah, shite maybe, but what lyrics; "Let's get the rock out of here" and "Suppose
a rock's out of the question" are works of genius (as adolescent music goes).
And how about all those tasteful shots of half the drummer? (Ooof!)

Nicey and Smashy hosting TOTP? It was a dream come true. As for
Blackie Lawless of Wasp, whatever happened to the chainsaw cod-piece?
Actually, if I remember rightly it was'nt just any old chainsaw cod
-piece but an exploding chainsaw cod-piece. More Spinal Tap than
Spinal Tap. Wasp live shows would also act as a vehicle for Mr
Lawless' "New Man" sensitivities. This would involve Lawless
(what a name) whipping a naked female strapped to a rack with a
hood over her head. Definitely not sponsored by Camden Council this

    Morning,

Do you listen to JJJ the public broadcasting station, when I was
in Australia it was undoubtedly the superior radio station. The depth
and breath of music not to mention one particular totally of
the planet DJ " Maaaaaaynard", broadened my music sphere considerably.

Unfortunately there was a major clear out of the radicals Amanda
Collinge, Biggsy etc when I was there. Sad indeed that in a public
     station commercialism has crept in.

One rather amusing incident and one which perhaps set the tone for
the entire station is when, during industrial action regarding the
freedom of speech in the context of the right to play NWA's "Fu*k the
Police". The station staff simply played NWA's "Express yourself" over
and over again ad infinetum (sp).

Listening to Triple J, should keep you in touch with the better
aspects of European, American, African, and obviousily OZ/NZ music.

Are an Aboriginal band called Scrap Metal from Broome, West
Australia still on the go ?

However, I don't get alot of time to listen to it working these bastard

I have not heard of the group 'Scrap Metal' and have asked around about
them but I'm told that they're not around any more ...sorry matteeee.

Not that I like Def Leppard (I don't), but I dislike Geldof even more
and I think he should keep drug induced trap to himself. The guy has no
talent, and is basically riding on the success of his past crappy
antics and thinks he is now a celebrity and is hip and cool.

Def Leppard, love 'em or hate 'em, may write cheesy lyrics, but they're
making music for a market, somewhere, which is more than old Greasy
    chops of doing.

humans inteligence. - Three albums in about fourteen years is

Drug Induced? Sue Bob, Sue!

Geldof has never confessed to being talented. He has, in his own words, 'a
bloody awful voice'. He is a celebrity. He probably doesn't know the
meaning of 'hip and cool'.

I like neither Geldof nor Def Leppard to any great degree, but I do admire (as

lyrics on prime-time TV! Good on him for that much... I wonder how many 14-year-
old metal-teenies were up in arms? :-)

Well, it seems as though soon it will be a case of the Last Last
Night on Top of the Pops as speculation suggests that this
Thursday eveining institution will be subject to the director's
    chopper (oo-err!).

The demise of the 7" single and it's sales, the public's and
especially "the kids" changing attitudes to pop culture; the
way they buy it and the tastes they have, has obviously had a
profound effect on a show based, initially on the sales of
singles. TOTP more recently adapted it's format to cater for
increasing public demand for long playing CDs/Tapes/Vinyl so it
remains to be seen whether the show expands that feature to occupy
    more programme time.

I personally feel it's had it's day. The name lends itself more
to an era when 7" singles were shifted in their hundreds of thousands
by an assortment of singles groups to a younger buying public where
Pop and music culture played a bigger part in their lives. The late
80's, 90's obsession with "lifestyle" and the fact that each
successive generation improves on the last in terms of choice
(Television, video, computers, game consoles...) has proved a
distraction to the position that three minutes of black plastic once
enjoyed. Also people are now more likely to go out and buy the new
Simply Red or Michael Jackson album rather than buy the single as
    sales have shown.

I don't know that one Paul. I'm not saying TOTP has lost it's
influence on the buying public but in order to get on the programme
you really don't need to sell as many records as you used to. As a
result the charts IMHO have become more interesting with a lot
more appearances by growing indie (label or attitude) bands with
a good core of fans. 10-15 years ago you'd need a good 150,000
in sales to get a number one, nowadays I'd be surprised if band
    need half of that amount.

It was interesting to hear Pete Waterman's comments on
TV am the other morning.

Major labels release singles from albums. Hence most
singles released by known artists are available on
albums so the public buy the albums. This was not the
case years ago. The Beatles released singles that
weren't on albums, forcing serious fans to buy the singles
and the albums.

Nowadays the dance bands that can't get it together
enough to release an album just release singles. Since
this is the only way of getting the music, a lot of
dance music gets into the charts.

Makes sense to me.

tp

As an only occasional visitor to Britain these days, TOTP is essential
viewing. It does seem to show the music that people are actually listening
to. It and the ITV Chart Show.

And I can't see the demise of the single, no matter what medium it apppears
on. Record company marketing is tied to hit tunes. That's what videos are
for. And single tunes hit the mood of the moment better than an album ever
can. How often have you bought an lp on the strength of a single and found
that the single was the only bit worth listening to?

So I'd be sad if TOTP died. But I think there's plenty of room for it to
start featuring records from some of the specialised charts that exist
these days, much like the Chart Show does.

Did anyone see TOTP last night on UK_Gold, It was from 1978 I think as
"Your the one that I want" was No1, It featured class acts like
Johnathan King with "One for you, One for me" and Dollar
    "Shooting Star" NOT..!!

The Undertones were on doing "Teenage Kicks" Elvis Costello with
"Radio Radio" and The Boomtown Rats with "Rat trap" PIL with
" Public Image" there was also E.L.O with Legs & CO dancing to
"Sweet talking woman" But they saved the best till last......
after No 1 had been played we were treated to that all time classic

Was it East 17 of was it Take That who sang a song with one of them
seated at a piano? Whoever they were, the "piano player" clearly has no
understanding of how to actually play the instrument, even if he was
only miming. But I don't expect that comes as a surprise to anybody.

That reminds me of when East 17 were on the European MTV awards. Before the
show, they were called in to mess around (or Jam, as us old fashioned blokes
like to call it) with Ray Cokes (presenter) and zig & zag. They dawdled over
to some instruments, and the "pianist" (or at least it sounds like "pianist"
<wink>) attempted pathetically to play a basic tune. Needless to say, he
failed. They are clearly a bunch of talentless to$$ers. Come back Bros, all is
forgiven - at least one of them could play the drums!

be worse, it could be Boyzone, Ireland's answer to Take That
(described in a London newspaper as a sub-standard Take That (is
that possible) with a stunning (!) cover of the Osmonds classic

I think this was the subject of a bit of legal action pressed on the

there hasn't been a new band as such for a long time - what year did
The Human League make it big? Level 42 were OK in their time too, but

Also, I actually watched the Michael Jackson video last night on Totp.
I've not heard the song before, it doesn't have much tune does it? I
don't know if the video is worth all that money, or what it has to do
with the song, but I like the 'look' of it, all that harsh black n

She looked flippin' awful in that video. I find it hard to believe that he

Well, last night I decided I would try and watch Top of the Pops. I
missed the beginning, so I have no idea who that Cher-wannabe
    presenting was

an exclusive presentation of George Michaels new song? Should have
been exclusively presented to the dustbin. Talk about a triumph of
form over content - tuneless, bland, drivel that only goes to prove he
has no ideas in his head. He wrote some cracking pop tunes ten years
ago, but this was a complete insult. And what a waste of an expensive
video. Complete garbage that can only appeal to people with an IQ
    smaller than their shoe size.

And it was followed by The b****y Cranberries. The sight of Delores
'look at the size of my willy' Riordan makes me want to strap on my
walking boots and give her a serious kicking.

And as for The Cure - God knows I worship Robert Smith to the tips of
his pinky toes, but this is a half formed tune that sounds like a left
over from the KM3 sessions. You know someone is on the way out when
they have to add that special 'Tijuana' feel - eooh eooh eooh indeed.

I switched off after a few seconds of the No 1, more bland drivel.

    Sorry.

really paying much attention. I agree with you about Dolores, she
sounds like a poor (wo)man's Feargal Sharkey with the wobbly voice.

As for the Cure, I can take them or leave them, after last night's

Great! more people who hate the Cranberries. That performance last

TOTP was great a few months back for a while but has now gone downhill
rapidly. There seemed to be a couple of months before/after Xmas where
there was loads of good stuff in the charts, my bulging record cabinet
and shrinking wallet could hardly keep up, now there's not much around
and TOTP seems to be reflecting that
