967.0. "Thousand Yard Stare" by SUBURB::WAITEG (GARY WAITE) Thu Jan 23 1992 15:44

I've just heard the Seasonstream EP by Thousand Yard Stare. They are
the most brilliant group out. Has anyone got the weatherwatching EP
they want to sell. Also has anyone got any info on them.

I have the Weatherwatching E.P. but wont sell it because
like Seasonsteam, it's poptastic record. It'll be available in
the Reading OurPrices, it certainly was before Christmas.

I've seen them live a couple of times and have always had a great
time. Even had a bit of a dance(Surely not). They've got good
songs and its pull them off well live. I believe that their first
album is being released in February and to top it all they are
	local(ish) lads.

I tip these boys to be colossal in '92.

	Micky Most.

They also have a 4 track EP entitled "Keepsake".

There's a bit about them in the "Concert Review" note, 20.351
    	from Tim.

I can't wait for their album...

Certainly the Keepsake and Seasonstream are available on CD. Dunno
    about Weatherwatching though.

I bought the Keepsake E.P. as an appallingly pressed 10" yellow
piece of vinyl. It looked like it had acorns and bark in it, so I
returned it and asked for a replacement. They seemed very insistent
that I be replaced with another yellow vinyl number, but had none in,
"but the sales rep. has them with him, and if you come back
tomorrow when he's called..." I took the regular 12" single 'cos I
dont give a toss about yellow vinyl.

The sales rep. from either their record company "Stifled Aardvark" or
whoever distributes calls regularly into Reading Our Price (certainly
the one at the Heelas end of town) and carries some of their records
with him, so ordering should not be a problem.

The Frank and Walters I believe. Be there or etc. etc.

Anybody know where they got the name from ??

There's a song 'The Boy with the Thousand Yard Stare' by Big
Country, or perhaps B.C. got the idea from the same source as
T.Y.S. I haven't heard 'em yet, what kind of music is it?.

I think that a "Thousand Yard Stare" is what Vietnam vets came back
with. Something to do with being shocked into lunacy by endlessly being
shot at. Probably the same thing as shellshock (WW1) or post-traumatic-
stress-disorder (what people get when they've had a bad experience they
    can't cope with).

Personally I think it's a little bit pretentious (what can Vietnam mean
to a 1990s Thames valley pop group?) but since when has that ever
mattered when it comes to band names.

967.13Wot about the album ??AYOV27::MMCKINLAYWed May 13 1992 21:4121

Everyone so far has mentioned some of their EP's, the album is
    pretty good as well !

I first heard of the band on the "Happy Daze" compilation and then
eventually managed to obtain most of their EP's. I am however
struggling to get a hold of their first EP which I believe is some
of their demo stuff. So far I have the following:-

    Weatherwatching EP (12" vinyl)
    Keepsake EP (12" vinyl)
    Seasonstream EP (12" vinyl)
    Commeuppance EP (CD single)
    Hands On (CD album)

I am sure that the album lists everything they have released to
date and would publish this if anyone is interested ?

    Mark.

The first copies of the LP had a 10" live bootleg, featuring
4 songs, Buttermouth, Three Doors Down and two others whcih elude me
    for the moment. Very good.

Another band I first heard via Tim Price, actually I bought "Keepsake"
while out with him in Brighton. I picked up a disk, here available
here in the states as an import that at quick glace contains some of
the earlier releases but had to put it down for now...I had already
exceeded my spending quota some time before seeing it!

There's something else, just for completeness, which is a compilation of the
first three EP's. I think its called "Fair to Middling". I also think its
either missing a track or has gained an extra track from the EP's.

Just picked up the LP "Mappamundi". What can I say, except, if
you're into their other stuff you'll like this. They've even
had a go at adding some 'drippy, aciddy' synth to a song, and it works
	very well. Buy it.

No ones said anything here for a while. I used to work with Sean the
bassist and a major motivating force behind the band. We both started
work at British Airways, as junior programmers in 1989. The band were
together and giging but fame had yet to becon.

There were 18 of us training together and Sean was 'the star'. The
funniest person I have ever met. We all laughed our selves into a
stupor for the three months of the training then went into our
respective job roles. Sean left six months after starting, to
concentrate on the band, who were still 'unheard of'. Two months
later after self financing their first two ep's. They were 'Hot' on the
indie scene. Their home town was Slough. They toured with James in
1990/91, signed to EMI and were all set. They did Reading in 1991, drew
the biggest crown for the Slough festival (so what !). The album was
released and they moved into the fast track to obscurity. From which
they haven't returned. This is what the music industry does to most of
its young hopefools, unfortunatley. Better to have lived ... though as
they say. No idea what they're up to now.

Excuse this selfish trip down amnesia lane, but I have fond memories of
TYS gigs, and gut wrenchingly funny episodes perpatrated by Sean.

I really like these guys and was fortunate enuff to meet them on their
(only?) US tour a few years ago.

    Ed,

They only toured the US once, well so far anyway. I don't think their on
EMI anymore, they may not even be on any label. Eventually, hopefully
before this year is out I am gonna try and get a few old B.A. people
together including, I hope, Sean. To do some catching up. I am keen to
know what he is up to its bound to be interesting.

    Anthony.
