964.0. "Steve Reich gig - spare ticket." by LARVAE::COHEN_D (Still, musn't grumble) Mon Jan 20 1992 16:08

Steve Reich + Musicians At the Royal Festival Hall

    Only UK gig

    Thursday 27-Feb-1992 8pm

Performances of "Different Trains", "Drumming Part 1", "Electric
    Counterpoint" and "Sextet".

    I have 1 (one) spare ticket - any takers - it's a good seat.

Contact me on LARVAE::COHEN_D or David Cohen @BST. Home phone is 0734
    590301 (after 6.30pm).

Who on earth is Steve Reich? Well he's not that chat "in the
afternoon" for starters. I guess he can be described as a 'minimalist',
if you need a box to put the guy in. He's been around since the
mid-60's and Channel 4 screened a documentary on him just before
Christmas. It's mainly orchestral stuff, although he appeals to people
with wide tastes ie. rock audiences. His works are long, and mainly
built around slightly changing repetition, within a song (uhhh?).
Comtemporaries - Terry Riley (eg. "In C) and Phillip Glass, who is
probably the 'commercial' end of this type of music. I reckon it'll be
a very interesting show; I have tapes if you wanna hear some stuff.

I once heard Mike (O') Scott sing the praises of this man. His
influences, so I'm told, can be heard on the orchestral arrangements
    on "This is the Sea".

Reich uses gometric progressions and suchlike in his compositions..

For example he might write something where the tempo always changes from
one measure to the next. Easy if you have a sequencer/synth, but
from a musicians point of view its extremely hard to play.

    re: .1/.2

Thanks for the comments. .2 is certainly on the nail - his stuff is
    pretty hard to play live.

Well, any takers for this ticket?

    David.
